Wicked One Model
WO32
32
inches wide x 24 inches deep x 13.5 inches high.
Weight is aprox. 75 lbs.
The WO32 subwoofer
brings musical truth to bass in
a way that all discerning audiophiles can appreciate.
To listen to it once is to understand
the definition of speed.

DESCRIPTION
Dual
Folded Horn using two ten inch sub woofers.
This
is a high performance solution to the slow, colored,
boomy bass found in so many store bought subwoofers. Plans are available for this cabinet.
Cabinets
are available both finished and unfinished. We
recommend our DHM-108 sub woofers for this cabinet.
FEATURES
This
enclosure, designed by Steve Deckert in the early
1990's, has some unique features. It is actually
two folded horns sharing the same mouth. By sharing
the same mouth it was possible to reduce the cabinet
size by approximately half what it otherwise would
have needed to be. Each horn flare has a total
length exceeding 5 feet, yet the cabinet size is
only 24 x 32 inches!
Since
the design uses two matching 10 inch subwoofers
it can be wired in stereo or mono. It is constructed
of dense 3/4 inch MDF with a removable top. The
woofers are easily removed with two screws thanks
to an interlocking baffle.
Available
in any stage of completion with or without woofers.
The woofers used in this design are our DHM-108
8 ohm 10 inch subwoofers. They are suitable
for high power applications up to 250 watts. They
also have a good efficiency of 90 + dB with 1 watt
so they also respond well to lower power applications.
The
cabinet can use 1/2 inch or thicker glass in
place of the lid. With a good gasket to seal between
the glass and the cabinet, it can be used as a coffee
table for home theater. It can also be used
without the lid by flipping it over on a 1/2 pile
carpet with pad. The floor becomes the lid
at that point and seals up the box. The Q-Loss
through the carpeting creates an action similar
to a varo-vent allowing the box to breath. Direct
coupling to the floor through carpet raises the
efficiency, lowers the cut off frequency, and offers
the richest sound.
With
the lid installed, the sound becomes tighter and
the box can then be placed vertical or horizontal
for more placement flexibility.

Many
audiophiles have used this sub because it has the
speed and control of a horn many times it's size
but with normal efficiency.
It also launches a far more organized wave
front of greater size than is possible in a sealed
or ported box design. It is popular with electrostat
owners and people with small horn loaded and or
high efficiency drivers like Lowther and Fostex.

AMPLIFICATION
and CROSSOVERS
Recommended
amplification is between 90 ~ 500 watts. Impedance
is 8 ohms per side or 4 ohms in parallel (mono).
Active crossover is recommended and should
be set between 40 Hz ~ 90Hz. The W032 is a
bass design only. It will not work
at higher crossover points.
Shown
above is a small plate amp installed into the rear of the cabinet.
We do not offer the box this way because in order to fit
a plate amp in this location it must be small limiting its power
to 100 watts or less. Fine with low power tube gear at
very modest listening levels but that's about it. We recommend
you use a stand alone sub amplifier. An inexpensive but reasonably
good choice would be the:
Dayton HPSA1000-R 1000W Rackmount Subwoofer Amplifier
from Parts Express.
DESIGN
NOTES:
This
cabinet design employees two series of conical tapers
that are mirror imaged and combined into a rapid
flare resulting in a wide angle discharge.
Sharing
the mouth of this horn between two conical tapers
effectively gives you two horn flares each over
5 feet in length that fit into a box only 24 x 32
inches.
While
this design is a variation of the original wicked
one, it is different in that the driver directly
loads the horn flare which has been lengthened. The original wicked one
cabinet was larger in size and used two band pass boxes
where the horn flares were used in place of ports.
An
obvious difference between the WO32 flare
design and a more conventional horn is that the
taper shrinks to a point. Sometimes called
a tapered pipe. The woofer is loaded
on the sidewall of the taper firing directly into
the adjacent surface less than 1 inch away. This
technique over-dampens the woofer resulting in a
flatter impedance curve, excellent power handling,
and better linearity within its operating range. The typical air space
between the cone and throat has been reduced dramatically.
This creates a direct linear relationship
between the air in the horn flare and the woofer
driving it.

A FINISHED CABINET
The
WO32 comes standard precision built in MDF (Medium Density
Fiberboard).
You
can also order it with a pair of our recommended woofers.
Cabinets
come with a removable lid.
We
also offer the cabinet in a variety of custom finished hardwood
veneers. The interior is painted black. If you're interested
in a Hardwood version please specify OAK, MAPLE, WALNUT, CHERRY
in the comments section of the order form. If you want
a hardwood not listed here please call
or e-mail
to discuss a custom finish.

PLANS
The
WO32 design employees a lot of angles and must be built exactly
to work properly. To this end, we have created an actual size
layout template and printed set of plans. These plans are not
available on line.
