The book, Secrets of Car Audio, more pertinent today than when it was written!
Written over 10 years ago, the book remains pertinent as ever and just proves that car audio has not advanced in any way shape or form since the early 90’s despite what manufacturers would like you to believe!
Offered as an online book, it has been read over 90,000 times. Recently another car audio enthusiast discovered our web site and has this to say:
“Steve,
I apologize for sending the second email concerning what to do with the crossover networks. I was in the process of reading the Secrets of Car Audio, and must admit I was confused between the two. After re-reading the Time Alignment Schematic I see that there is no need for the Crossover Networks, so I will be packaging them, and possible selling them on eBay.
Today I received my Dayton Caps (1% Metallized Polypropylene). As I have said in my previous email, thank you for the best 19.95 I have ever spent. Your Secrets of Car Audio book could have been my autobiography. During the entire time I thought I was “researching,” audiophile quality, I was making the same mistake as the character in your book, namely more is better and bigger is better. Somewhere inside, while I am no technician such as yourself, I knew there had to be a scientific method to better sound, not bells and whistles, and your website has proven it. In fact, I have been giddy all afternoon re-discovering my music. Again, thank you.
As much as I thought I “enjoyed” my music, it has never been like this before. Your Time Alignment Schematic has made my car a musical masterpiece. I have never heard fidelity like this in car audio, ever. It seems that High SPL and muddy midbass and shrill highs has taken car audio by storm.
I have recently stumbled upon a website (Parts Express, where I ordered the Dayton Caps) and I am seriously considering selling the rest of my Polk SR and picking out some other speakers (the Dayton Reference possibly) and creating my own system. I especially like the Dynavox Drivers and Morel, however these are all 8 ohm drivers, which would see my total impedance 16 ohms, and I fear that this will make my amplifier useless. Unless you think otherwise, which if you do, please let me know. I can only imagine how busy your are so a quick yes or no will be much appreciated and understood.
Again, thank you for re-introducing me to music,
All the best,
George Stephen Taylor “
Dear George,
16 ohms won’t actually render your amplifier useless. It will drop the power output but at the same time the headroom will increase. Nonetheless, in most cases around a 4 ohm load is probably ideal. Many times I’ll put 8 ohm drivers in the rear and 4 ohm drivers in the front so the front drivers see more power giving you a nice front stage.
