Title: Up Tube Creek Without A Tester
Post by Rivieraranch on 06/24/09 at 12:33:58

In March, I sent my tube tester away for calibration and some updates. Unfortunately it is still at the shop, although I am told that it is ready now.

In the meantime, I bought a Mini Torii that is just sitting in its box because I can't test the tubes I bought for it.

Somebody I met locally who has a tester offered to help but flaked out on me.  I have even tried negotiating on an emissions unit to fill the void but the seller, who I encountered on a ham website, was being a real @%$# in the communications around the transaction.

So I basically give up. I am ready to commit hari kiri on myself using an EL-84 tube. I will just have to wait until my tester is returned.

I feel for you!

I've never had a tube tester and I guess I've been lucky. . . .

A simple way to test the tubes you purchased for your Mini Torii would be to install them into the amp and turn it on - see if music plays.  No sense killing yourself - besides I'm anxious to get your impressions of this killer little amp!!

My old tube tester quit working about 6 years ago and went in the trash. I had a friend who would test tubes for me but he died about 3 years ago. Now I just install the tube after a visual inspection. If they light up, sound good and don't turn into a Roman Candle I call that a good test.

I like to buy tubes for my equipment and maintain a collection. Testing them enables me to sell what I don't want to keep. It also allows me to determine which tubes are strong and sound best in my equipment. I enjoy the atomic age tinkering with the retrotech stuff.
