Title: Zen TORII on Wilsons
Post by kana813 on 05/07/11 at 02:01:06

Wondering if anyone has tried the Zen TORII on Wilson speakers?

In Art Dudley's reviews of the Sophia 2/3, he had no problem driving them with 25W Shindo Corton-Charlemagne mono amps.

Is the Zen TORII's 25W as good as the Shindo's?

My educated guess . . .would be "YES."

Lon,

If your guess is wrong, ordering a Zen TORII to find out and having to return it if it can't drive my S3s would be expensive.

More info would be helpful.
Size of room?
Other components?
Turntable or digital?
Do you own/have you heard the Shindo?

Comments from the Stereophile review measurements section:
"Though the impedance drops to 3.15 ohms in the upper bass and there is a combination of 5 ohms and –44° electrical phase angle at 57Hz, overall the Sophia 3 will not be hard to drive. The shape of its impedance curve will tilt the high frequencies up a little with tubed amplifiers, however."

YMMV but personally I would probably end up biamping these with a ss amp on the woofers.

Lin,

You can see my current set up here:

http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?vaslt&1293511249

Dormant TT is a Nottingham Space Deck with a Space Arm and an MDC-800(the Arm) with a Grado Sonata REF.

Room is 12' x 18 ' x 8'. Haven't heard any of the Shindos.

Have heard the S3s with the ARC VSi60 Integrated, which drove them
very well.

Just like all the other current Wilson speakers, the Sophia 3s are not designed to be bi-amp'd or bi-wired.

Mahalo for your comments.

Understood. I don't think you're going to find anyone with direct experience here, but I could be wrong.

I was guessing because I know that the Torii puts out lots of current, and the other 24 watt per channel amp was given a clean bill of health driving them.

I have not heard any Shindo, but I don't care for the input sensitivity spec of 0.5v for use with digital ( I assume the PS dac puts out 2v max ), the Torii is 2v for full output, which will allow you to use all of the dac's volume control.

A quote from N. Pass:
"So here we are in the New Millennium, and thanks to Tom Holman and THX we’ve got lots of gain in our electronics. More gain than some of us need or want. At least 10 db more.

Think of it this way: If you are running your volume control down around 9 o’clock, you are actually throwing away signal level so that a subsequent gain stage can make it back up."

Lin,

FYI-the PWD put out 2.8v on the unbalanced and 5.6v on the balanced outputs.

Ordered a  Zen TORII.

In 6-8 weeks, we'll find out if can drive the Wilson Sophia 3s.
