Title: Why is there Noise coming from the right speaker ?
Post by Delta 77 on 06/01/22 at 14:24:02

I have a noise coming from the right speaker every now and again..
Sounds like White noise and or a Crackle..
The amp in question is a ZMA.
I have swapped the tubes from one side to the other, input tubes first, then the power tubes then the OA3’s ..
The noise didn’t move to the other side, which leads me to believe it’s not the tubes??
The noise comes and goes, usually during start up it will make the noise for a minute or so then go away and come back every now and again for a few seconds to a minute.
Any idea on how to further troubleshoot this problem ?

Thanks Burt..

The things I would try next are:

1) Check for noise with the volume is all the way down.

2) Check with no input connections.

3) swap left and right input and speaker connections and see if it moves.

Thanks James  I will test as well. When I first start my amp in the am(bout 6) I hear what sounds like a rustle scratchy noise from my left speaker only, sometimes a faint thump, swear I thought my imagination. Ive fiddlled with my connects and speaker cables think I have it, yet will still hear it sometimes. My right XLR does not lock like it is supposed to so check it…

You should also try changing the rectifier tubes as one of them could be on the way out. I have had a dying rectifier sound exactly as you describe.

ZMA doesn't have tube rectifiers, does it?

Upon closer reading of the description, no it does not. The description is not entirely accurate, and I didn't look close enough.
My bad.

How long has it been since you've cleaned your connections? You could have oxidation/tarnish/dust/fuzz/cat hair etc. causing this noise. I use DeoxIT contact cleaner and enhancer on each component connection, interconnect ends, and speaker terminals every four to six months.

I guess Crazy was basing off my UFO as I kinda butted in on this string. I have input a couple of older, used rectifiers (80) Globes, so I will check it, and I ordered some Detoxit. Thanks guys

While you are waiting on Amazon sweep the input control back and forth but not quite to the limits, many times this control will oxidize a tiny bit when it isn’t rotated frequently.

I’ve narrowed it down to the most right output tube socket..
I will try to get at it this weekend..
I will have to remove it from the system..

For me it appears to have been rectifier as since swapping it is not doing it. Also noise or hum is much quieter

Okay here is how it went a couple of days ago..

The noise became more constant and wouldn’t quit..
So I pulled the tube out of the suspected socket (right rear output).
And simply reinserted the (Sophia Electric EL34)tube and NO Noises at all since reinstalling the tube..

Perhaps it had a loose pin connection some where , perhaps there was a dirty spot , IDK..
But so far so good, it’s working great..
