Hey Greg,

When I saw that you had a passive preamp for sale that you built, I thought that was very cool, but what the heck is a "passive preamp?"  Turning to the ChatGPT "robot," I found the following description:

"A passive preamp, also known as passive volume control or passive attenuator, is a device used in audio systems to control the audio signal's volume without actively amplifying or modifying the signal. Unlike active preamps, which include active electronic components like transistors or operational amplifiers, passive preamps use passive components such as resistors, potentiometers, and transformers.

The primary function of a passive preamp is to provide impedance matching and volume control between audio source components (such as CD players, turntables, or media players) and power amplifiers. It allows the user to adjust the volume level of the audio signal before it reaches the power amplifier.

Passive preamps are often favored by audio enthusiasts who value simplicity and a purist approach to audio reproduction. They can provide a transparent and uncolored signal path, preserving the integrity of the original audio signal."

This is new to me, have others had experience with a passive pre?

Congrats on the build Greg, and good luck with the sale!

Tony,

I often use one from Tortuga audio(with remote) with both my Torii III and LTA Ultralinear.
I got it for 2 reasons: With a troublesome back getting up so often to change the volume on my previous preamp was challenging. Two, I wanted to change the volume but hear my sources and the amp specifically, a shorter audio path so to speak. Now that I now own a kick ass preamp that does add a lot to benefit the sound it interesting to go back and forth sometimes.
I just checked his website and he does still sell parts to build your own if you want to try it out. I have no affiliatioin.

The remote can right when you really want the 'right' amount of volume. Even a little bit sometimes makes a difference.
I had an option to buy a similar unit, but then would have to add a chassis, power supply for the relays, etc. It would have cost me too much for a temporary situation.
I would look for a unit that has 2 outputs though. I will use one to feed a sub.

GroovySauce talks in favor of using autoformers as a volume control. I have not tried Intact Audios autoformers yet but will be the goto if the CSP2 is ever taken out of the system.

I am interested in this concept, but likely will never know the benefit due to price. Funny though when you consider how many thousands of dollars that I spent over decades on so many wrong products (but a hell of a lot of really cool ones too).
A general bitch that I have for SO many advertisers is the need for me to decipher their ads and what they really mean to say! Proof reading would be impressive. Part of the description of one of the auto former products states that the wire is .9999% silver. Hmmm. Decimal point error? Over the years, I see/read less and less decent communication, and when I bring it to light, there is criticism of me being too picky. Rant over.
I do believe these products to be expensive, but likely worth it. Probably would spend the extra to get the Elma switches though instead of what looks to be really cheap plastic switches.
