Title: Static interference from one of my SE84UFO
Post by Geno on 05/18/24 at 19:16:52

What do you folks make of this static?  It does not do this all the time, and what you are hearing is worst case scenario(and my iPhone microphone makes it sound louder than it really is)

I listened this morning, and the static was barely audible. I’m hoping that the Snubway I ordered will help with this.

Geno. In my experience anyway, this does not sound like noise something like the snubway would solve. The steadiness seems pretty intense, but I have heard this sort of static with a tube going, or from the tube socket having gotten loose, so a weak connection. If it is the latter, you may be able to tell if you gently turn the input tube (usually the culprit for me) in its socket to put more tension on the pin/socket connection, using a rag or something to protect your fingers, and see if it changes. Amp off and discharged, I have carefully tightened my tube sockets at times, with small sharp tool, especially for the small tubes like the inputs, I think I straighten out one of those dental picks to do it... been a while.

Sounds like tubes to me. Have tried swapping all the tubes between your two amps to see if the noise follows?

Thanks Will and James.

I will try swapping tubes between amps first, and see what that does. The noise is coming from my newer amp, at the moment.

After experimenting, I’ll report back.

Thanks guys,

Geno

Swapped the input tubes around. This isolated it to one tube causing the noise.

The bad thing is, the input tubes are Wathen Cryoed e88cc, at $120 a pop.

One is about 18 months old, and the other is about a year old. I have no idea which is which.

My condolences Geno, sorry for your loss. This is of course the flip side of high dollar tubes: they don’t last forever.

Isn't longevity a big part of the Wathen cryo pitch? I recall it that way when they first started to be talked about anyway... that their process causes tubes to last extra long... With a lot of good NOS inputs purported to last 5000 and more hours... one year every single day at 5 hours a day is not much over 1800 hours. I guess worth a call...

Bummer, Geno. I’ve been using the 88 from Wathan for several years now. It’s the best of their input tube options that I have heard. Knocking on wood it keeps going strong. Will is right, the longevity is why I tried them in the first place and the great sound is a perk. The price has raised since they were first released. Don has them at $163 + shipping these days.

Yep. I have been very happy with the tubes. Among, if not the best, input tubes I’ve used.

Quality and claim of longevity, were the reasons I decided to try them.

It won’t hurt to get in touch with Don, and see what he says.

Thanks for the input, gents!
