Title: Latest bench builds
Post by 4krow on 12/11/24 at 01:08:16

I can only hope to be able to post a couple of photos of two different preamp builds that I have enjoyed building in the last year. please note that the completed front panel is shown in the last photo for the Glasphone pre. Here goes:

Ok, that worked. So here are the backsides, which BTW are identical. The two preamps are very different though. One uses output transformers in the circuit, and the other uses tubes in the circuit. Both circuits are design by different engineers and that is how they came out. I actually like the SS one just a little more than the tube design, which uses 12AU7 tubes.

Very nice work, 4k. I have a soft spot wood chassis like that. I really like the knob on the top unit with the tubes in the first image; the knob with the subdivision marks between numbers. Really looks sharp and highlights the wood.

So how do they sound? Are they for you or a customer?

Thanks Donnie and Gilf. Man, these are some work, but I had this wood in my shop forever, so it was time to make use of it. The top unit is my latest (the 'Glasphone') and as stated, uses the 12AU7 tubes with circuit designed by John Broskie of GlassWare Audio. I really like his designs and circuit boards. I should mention that the top unit has its own separate headphone amp that uses the SP1 tube by Korg. It was designed by Pete Millett of DIY Audio and is one of my favorite tubes in audio. Nelson Pass used it in a buffer amp and later in a preamp so it has a good background. Yah, it is for sale.
The bottom preamp is SS and was built in dedication of my 96 mom who grew up in a logging camp called 'Moskee'. The wood came from a customer decades ago and is gunstock quality. Nope. This one I am keeping.

Have patience guys! The FINISHED front panel for the Glasphone is here. Big improvement. And I MUST add that the lettering is easy to read despite what the lighting did for the photo.
