My tastes anymore run from Ry Cooder to Chris Whitley and while I hate to keep beating this horse, James McMurtry. I've got to see James a couple of times in the last few years and he is, in my opinion, not only a great song writer but also a guitar god.

The abstractness of it. . . that there's no real "hooks" of melody and that the structure varies. I can put it on and do a whole bunch of things. I can do this five times in five days and have five different listening experiences, I'll notice different things each time. This time I really got captured by some of Chuck Israel's bass playing.

I also enjoy listening to Friedman and noting both the similarities and differences between his playing, touch and approach to that of Bill Evans.
