Quoted from Tidal - "On August 25, 2016, legendary music engineer Rudy Van Gelder passed away at his home studio in New Jersey at the age of 91, leaving behind an unprecedented legacy in jazz history. Born in 1926 in Jersey City, Van Gelder started recording jazz in the early 1940s while working as an optometrist, later becoming a full-time engineer in 1959. Earlier in the decade he befriended Alfred Lion, founder of Blue Note Records, and became their main recording engineer from 1953-1972. From his new, custom-made studio in Englewood Cliffs, Van Gelder found himself at the center of the development of modern jazz, working with artists like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, and countless others. The National Endowment for the Arts noted that he was “considered by many the greatest recording engineer in jazz and recorded practically every major jazz musician of the 1950s and 1960s.” On this playlist we’ve dug into the crates for some highlights from the Blue Note-issued "Rudy Van Gelder Editions," along with a couple of other iconic recordings to his credit (John Coltrane’s 'A Love Supreme' on Impulse! and Sonny Rollins’ 'Saxophone Colossus' on Prestige). Not only was Rudy Van Gelder a key figure in the heyday of jazz, but also in the development of modern music at large. This playlist gives a mere glimpse into his massive legacy."
