This one made a nice transition from Slim. I love this one. The Warner Japan CD sounds so much clearer than my scarred LP copy. I like these 24 bit Japanese Atlantics from this decade. What others complain about them, that they're pumped up etc. is possibly what makes them my favorite Atlantic cds, they seem to deliver the Atlantic experience I remember from pre-CD listening.

This is also a good cd to use to play around with different modes on the P10 power plant and the bias options on the Torii Mk III. With the P10 in "Low Distortion" mode the Torii delivers a more "solid state" like sound, that best of the solid state type of sound that Decware delivers, in "High Regulation" mode the sound is more of that best of a classic tube sound that Decware amps dish out. I use "High Regulation" more but with some material the "Low Distortion" presents a more three dimensional presentation, and will tighten up some flabby sounding recordings.

Going further into this new release.

I'm just starting to listen to this set. This set poses a problem for Miles Davis fans. It's unlike the other releases in the series. I find it fascinating. I can already say that one should follow one's instincts about purchasing this set. If you think that it's a collection of false starts, incomplete takes, and studio talk, and that you won't listen to this often enough to justify the purchase, well, that is what this is. I will say that for me the studio chatter, the starts and stops, the incomplete takes all contribute to a bit of education about the Quintet, Miles and Teo, how recordings were made in that studio at that time, how Miles leads a band in the shaping of an arrangement. . . and more. I can see why many would not want to spin this too many times. But I think I'll spin it often enough. Listening here by myself I can already think of five people I know that I would like to sit and listen to this with and exchange impressions and thoughts. And I will be happy to listen to this more times by myself (next run through I'll probably do on headphones).

Sound is exceptionally good imo.

I've had this one on and off the last week. I've fallen in love with its sound, feel, and mood. This can be approached several ways: as a great background fill, as a great chamber Brazilian work that commands your attention and draws you in, or as a demonstration disc of just how good your system can be.

This set is something else. Sounds killer! Edit to say: I've never heard Tony's drums played back better. And the session reel of "Nefertiti" is great to hear. All of a sudden Miles coms out with an idea for the arrangement that they all jump on and the master take is born. Great moment.
