Piano trio and a quartet of trombones, arranged by the ever capable Melba Liston. I've had the lp but this cd knocks my copy out of the water. I love Randy Weston. Long may he run.

Lon, I have a friend at work, about 50 years old, that claims that the best music is the stuff that sells that most which is why he believes genres like jazz and the blues I love are sub-standard as compared to Justin Bieber and the like. His theory is that if the music were that good it would have sold millions of copies and would be on the radio and he would have heard it. I brought Bitches Brew to work once and he complained the entire time that it was garbage because he couldn't sing to it. How do you handle an argument like that, right?

I think he would freak over you.

Wow. Well, I've encountered a few people similar, but no one quite like that. (One former coworker of mine used to say he liked both kinds of music, country AND western).

To be honest, I've always seemed somewhat different than others ever since I left Philadelphia at age 11 to spend six years in Africa when my dad was with the Peace Corps, and then after 1971 when we returned to America and moved to rural Ohio. I always seem to have a different taste or viewpoint to the majority around me. I quickly learned to not argue or try to convince anyone on many matters of taste or opinion. I have been pretty free with my own opinions, and received my share of animosity because I hold less than popular opinions, and have grown used to that. I would guess that someone who only believes in the very most popular music isn't really that into music. I would probably just shrug and leave it at that. Although I might be tempted to use this line of reasoning with him: I'd suggest that quality is almost inconsequential in what goes on the radio, the real reason is promotion and ultimately how much money is spent to get it there to his ear. Money spent in the hope of making even more back. Nothing to do with musical quality, sincerity, honesty, etc.

Lon, I do tell my coworker that all the music he likes and listens to was selected by some dude, in some office, in an expensive suit smoking a cigar and he doesn't believe that is true. He loves the Beatles and I told him that Justin Beiber and the like have made more money than the Beatles ever made in their time and he says that the reason that is true is because there are more people alive in the world today than there were in the 60s. His population theory knocked me on my butt.

So, I sit at work and I am forced to listen to Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and whatever else is on during the day and I get to hear the same songs over and over and over and over. Listen, nothing against Lady Gaga. It does take some kind of talent to write music, and sing it, and promote yourself, true, but to consider that the cream of the crop based on sales really blows my mind.

After I played an CD by Stanton Moore, a jazz drummer I like, he said that if Stanton Moore was really any good he would have been on the American Music Awards.

Oh, you should have heard the argument we had when Esperanza Spalding beat out Justin Beiber for best new artist. He couldn't understand how that could have happened. That was funny.

Thank heavens for headphones!!

Man, there's no saving that guy. He'll have to find out on his own what swill he's been listening to. It could happen one day.

And the things we have to put up with in the workplace! I've been free of a work place for a while, but I have to go back, need to start looking after the holidays. I'm afraid to even begin looking, all the frustration and disappointment. But I'll give it a go.
