This just arrived, the "Record Store Day" deluxe release (in June it will come out as a much cheaper 2LP and even cheaper 2CD set from Resonance Records.

Wow, this is a beautiful set, LP sized box with two LPs and a 48 page booklet packed with color photos that I've never seen before. Sound is excellent. I wasn't going to get this and wait for the cd set next month, but was pointed to an opportunity online to get it for the list price and free shipping (ebay prices are already wildly high!) Glad I did get it as I'm a Monk AND a Barney Wilen fan.

I'm now listening to the next show, the one before Cornell.

I can see why one might think these sound boards don't sound good. Garcia is often recessed and there's a reverberant nature to the vocals that sometimes renders them less effective.

It's just I've been listening to Dead on disc that is so much WORSE sounding. And then there's the Plangent Process--this release and the few beforehand that use it really helps the music, especially these two drum set years, as everything is synched up and there's no wobble or phasiness that you hear without it.

So I'm enjoying the sound even though it certainly isn't studio quality or the type of sound that Warner Bros. recorded for Europe '72 for instance. It at least has a 'rock steady' quality to it. And. . . it sounds better if you crank it up. I don't crank it on the headphones, but I'm listening to "Tennessee Jed" right now pretty loud via the HR-1s and it sounds really good.

Lon, yeah I guess that's what I was experiencing as well. I had to drastically raise the volume compared to almost anything else. I have old bootleg cassettes that sound way better. Somewhat disappointing. I don't expect it to sound like studio quality, but even compared to the lower volume Dick's Picks, this is recording is even lower. Great sets, just wish the audio quality was better.

The vinyl should be here in a couple days, so I will be able to comment on that then. My hopes are not high.

Right now I'm following the Monk up with an old favorite from boarding school days in Swaziland. . . and it's not as weird a transition as I thought it would be!

Listened to CD's last night for a change and the soundstage on the RPWL CD rivaled vinyl. Wow, awesome....I do need to upgrade my IC's from TT to ZP3 to SuperZen. Currently using Decware's low end cables which are likely my weak link.
