The SHM-CD.

Trying out a pair of Tesla 11TA31 in place of the RCA OA2 I have been using. Interesting. Purple glow, a tad mellower so far than the OA2 in a nice way.

My second listen to the new remix of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, cd version.

My favorite Beatles LP (I'm not a big Beatles fan, but this was one of the first LPs I owned, a mono copy). This sounds really nice, and if you are a Pepper's fan it's worth hearing. Won't replace my mono or stereo copies in heavy rotation though. . . .

Having some tube-rolling fun. Right now getting good sound out of a pair of RCA Mullard made ECC189 input tubes and some Tesla 11TA31 voltage regulation tubes. These RCAs may sound better with the RCA 0A2 though, which I'll probably investigate soon.

Listening to the most recent Japanese reissue cd.

I tried and I was wrong--the RCA Mullards sound best with the Tesla.

Right now the new SHM-CD, I'm so happy Japan is reissuing these Glenn Roulettes on CD, they are great sessions. Great original recordings and remasterings as well.

This McLean album seems like a nice homage and time slip to a Mingus world Jackie had a brief stint within. . . I really like it. This is the SHM-CD.

Morelenbaum is a master of the cello and he is rarely highlighted as he is here. .. this is a high quality recording as well. Wow.

Recent Sony budget reissue cd. Not sure this was officially on cd beforehand. I didn't get an OBI with this one but the sister Hambreau cd I got released by Sony says it's a 2015 DSD remastering and I think this one is too.

Interesting music, and some of the best Billy Bauer I've heard.

I also want to say that this mono cd is very well -recorded and remastered. Lenny has one of the prettiest alto sounds there ever was and it sounds so nice on this disc. This disc is very cleanly and clearly recorded. I've been using it to have fun with two modes I have on my PS Audio P10. The High Regulation and Lowest Distortion modes are almost like having two different amplifiers. The former is gutsier, punchier, warmer and the latter is clear, focused and dynamic. Rolling tubes in both modes is instructive and I find it yields to a lot of great sound.

Awesome news! That should be Decware's motto: "It Keeps Getting Better." Which it does. The amps are getting better through seasoning (something we don't talk about too much here) and we also learn so much more about the room, the other components, and even how we listen to music itself by using the Decware components.

I keep learning form Decware machines and these humans here, and the amazing playback is the pay off. . . .

I bought a few of the Time Records reissues from Solid Records (Japan). This one sounds really good: this is an oddly reverberant recording to begin with, but the mastering seems to allow it to be all it can be. At times it will sound as if you are in the middle of a small club, not a bad thing. Yet when Little plays unaccompanied his bright and clear sound is right there in your ear.

It seems any project with Paula Morelenbaum on board is almost as beautiful as she is. This one is awesome. Piano, trumpet, effects and Paula. Some cello as well (of course, she's married to Jaques!) Percussion too so it's more than a trio much of the time.

In the Cave now to spin Vinyl.  Yesterday a pair of Voodoo interconnects arrived as well as a pair of 1961 Amperex 12AX7s.  Both have been put in the system.

This LP was still on the TT...so it's first...

Let me know what you think of the interconnects!

I got "permission" to set up a second system upstairs for a bit and I'm using my one other pair of Stradivarius Cremona and a pair of the original Stradivarius there to connect the Denon universal player, CSP2+ and Eddie Vaughn modded C amp, powering a pair of Peachtree Audio bookshelf speakers.  Wow, the sound is awesome . . . and I'm sure the interconnects are a big part of the sound. Interestingly the C Zen amp powers these speakers about ten times better than the Taboo Mk III. I was going to keep my Taboo Mk III for this use when I receive my Taboo Mk IV, but now I think I'll use this set up instead and the Mk III may go on the chopping block. . . . I'm using this set up to go through all my excess audio stuff on hand and evaluate what is the cream of the crop.

Right now, I love Eddie Costa and this is a great one.

Lon, I've written before about the Taboo MK III and speakers.  For some reason it, at about 6 WPC produces less volume than my 2.3 WPC Zen Monoblocks. I was never pleased with that Amp with speakers and use it only for headphones.

Yes, I know you've mentioned that. Well actually I don't think it produces 6 watts,* I think the original did but that when it was repurposed for planar headphones the power was reduced to 4 watts or so and Steve has written that he has reduced the power further for the Mk IV. But yeah, theoretically it SHOULD sound louder and better with speakers than it does. I could live with it upstairs as a speaker source. . . as long as I didn't try the Zen amp. The Zen amp (and I'm not sure how modified it is beyond the bypassing of the volume control) just sounds better even at the same volume levels, and I think it would power my other pair of HR-1s or the ERRs I have in storage if I'm ever able to get those into the house. . . . I was going to sell the Zen amp but I think I'll keep it and sell other amps etc. instead in time.

The Taboo Mk III is a fantastic headphone amp though. . . If it could act as a preamp too it would be an even more amazing product.

*Yes I checked the Taboo Mk III manual: it says 4.6 watts. The new Taboo Mk IV page shows that it is 3 watts per channel.

The reason a Taboo produces less volume than a Zen Triode amplifier has nothing to do with power.  The reason is the difference in input sensitivity.  The input sensitivity of a Taboo is much lower than a Zen Triode which is to say that it requires more input voltage to reach the same volume level.

If you added the extra volume via a tube stage or preamp, you would find the Taboo actually outperforms the Zen Triode amplifiers.

From the product pages:

Taboo MKIV:  Input voltage = 2.1 volts for full output

Zen Triode:  Input voltage = 2.0 volts for full output

Is this what is meant by Input Sensitivity?  Doesn't look like much of a difference.

EDIT:  I looked up Steve's White Paper on the Taboo MK III and he says the Input Sensitivity is 2.5 to 3 volts.  That does look significant.

Thanks Steve, for the explanation. I actually have a CSP3 in my second system with two stereo outputs...the Taboo MK III sits on the same table.  I'll hook them up together and see how it sounds with speakers soon.  Mark.
