Lars Gullin, "A Portrait of my Pals" on Capitol CD.

I noticed this a month ago for 99 cents at dusty groove.com and just let it sit in their catalog for someone else because I have this date on cd and have for a while, I like it a lot.

Last week I saw it was still listed and added it to an order I was placing. Turns out it's a 2002 cd and I have previously the only other cd release, from 1989. So it's not an exact duplication and it sounds very nice.

I'm a Lars Gullin fan, and this one has all his own compositions save for two standards.

Would you classify this as Jazz and if so, is there a name for this genre or something?

The Twin Peaks is more Hollywood cinema jazz than anything . . . . There is a Bob Beldon cd called "Black Gardenia" that you may like along the lines of the Twin Peaks video and in some ways for both videos I think that the Miles Davis' "Water Babies" and other albums of the quintet with Shorter, Hancock, Carter and Williams fits--the music on the LA Noire video is best qualified as "modal jazz" and musicians such as Freddie Hubbard as well as some music by Gil Evans with Miles, Bobby Hutcherson and Gary Burton and Keith Jarrett Quartet albums fit, as well as Dave Douglas, Tony Williams Quintet, Wynton Marsalis Quintet and Mark Isham. See if you can stream some of those artists and see what strikes you. . .

Hi Lon, I'll look into those on Tidal. "Modal Jazz", I've heard the term but didn't know what it applied to. Been playing that LA Noire video game and just love the soundtrack. The guy who did the original soundtrack is Andrew and Simon Hale. There are a lot of other cool songs on that ... it's a crime mystery thriller game set in post WWII LA during the mid to late 40's. Everything from Hank Williams to Ella F., Louis A., Charlie P. and Bing Crosby to name a few ... so a lot of good tunes on it.

You're welcome. I haven't ever really played video games so didn't know that was a video game. . .makes sense. Most of that music on the video was "modal jazz" which was a style that grew out from the late fifties to the seventies. . .it stems from playing and improvising from different modes or scales instead of playing and improvising from the chord changes of songs as was done in the swing and bebop era. George Russell was the artist who probably most early and thoroughly put the concept out there on record, and Miles' Kind of Blue is perhaps the most famous modal album. . .the modal style deepened and became more fluid in the quintet that Miles had with Wayne Shorter, and that quintet influenced so many artists, including into the 'eighties and 'nineties with Tony Williams' group and Wynton Marsalis' 'nineties group being the most sophisticated works before the style sort of fizzled out before this century.

Lots to explore there and hope you find some great music to listen to.

Get a pressing from the mid-nineties on. . . as the original pressing had side one at the wrong speed, yes for more than thirty years it was heard incorrectly. The Mobile Fidelity from a few years ago is amazing on either LP or SACD.

This is a totally modern trio recording with Galper on piano, Steve Gilmore on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums, from '86. At that time this was the Phil Woods rhythm section. Some great tunes here and very spirited playing.
