I finally found a copy I could afford of this three cd set of the stereo Bartok Quartets by this masterful Quartet. I've heard the earlier mono recordings, but when I heard the wonderful stereo Beethoven quartets in glorious sound I knew I had to have this stereo cycle. So glad I do. Difficult music in some ways, but great playing and great sound.

Lon, am I mistaken but in the pat weren't you critical of Johnny Hartman, not liking him much? I have been a fan since I saw "The Bridges of Madison County". Love the Soundtrack more than the movie. I'm glad you're on board with me and spinning more Johnny Hartman lately. Love it...

So what a nice surprise that Steve gave us...a $50 Thanksgiving Day gift that morphed into a $100 extended Christmas gift for all. Just the added incentive for those thinking about adding a little more Decware to their lives. It has me thinking..."What could I add to the Z Rock II I ordered on Nov. 24th?" By my count only 10 others joined me...come on people, you can do better than that

Anyway, in the Cave and this LP has almost finished...Lovely...

This Monk LP next. Arrived yesterday. I had preordered it on Amazon for $25. It is the first LP of the Ltd Ed. 2 LP set. My only problem with it is that there is a small scratch on side B that affects the second solo performance of Pannonica...ticking no skip. I'm leaning toward keeping it...returning things is such a PITA and I almost never do it. And most important, the Sound Quality is wonderful...I would expect nothing less from Kevin Gray. Not sure where it was pressed...

PS...Discogs lists Pallas in Germany as pressing this LP. They are excellent.

PSS....correction. The 2 LP version was pressed by Pallas, the one LP 200 gm version was pressed at "Quality Record Pressings", a relatively new shop from the folks at Analogue Productions/Acoustic Sounds. Another excellent LP manufacturer.

Mark, I never disliked Johnny Hartman per se, I just wasn't crazy about him, and I think that I sort of resent the attention he gets from a lot of people who know him from a movie or audiophile pressings of the Coltrane collaboration and don't explore so many other vocalists that I like more. That's childish I know, but I really get miffed at the adoration of some singers (Krall is another) who I just don't think are as important as others who don't get the attention.

Anyway, there was a recent (over now) sale and I picked up four Impulse SACDs from Analogue Productions and as I think I gave away my cd of this years ago I picked it up. Nice mastering. I also like his Bethlehem and Roost and Regent recordings, I don't dislike him, he's just not topping my list of favorite vocalists. Sometimes he's a bit too much like a cross between Sinatra and Eckstine for me. . . I'm not a Sinatra fan really and that makes me pass the recording by when I'm in my shelves.

Lon, I'm not sure how well known Johnny Hartman was while he was alive. I'm sure his collaboration with Coltrane raised people's level of awareness. He died in 1983 so he didn't see his new found popularity brought about by some of his recordings included in the Soundtrack of the 1995 movie "The Bridges Of Madison County". I also liked the rest of the soundtrack...especially my girl Dinah Washington.

And why didn't you alert me to the Analogue Productions sale...mmm? haha
I wish you'd start buying more Vinyl reissues so you could alert me to sales. You are the master at sniffing out the best deals on CDs for sure...

I found out about the sale about twenty minutes before it ended and sorry, didn't broadcast it. Was half price on Analogue Production SACDs. . . I got four Impulse! and one RCA Living Stereo. . . could have bought more but for once showed some restraint.

It's so sad that many artists didn't live to see esteem and popularity. Life is like that, and I've gotten used to it.

Lon, you know I'm pulling your leg. I likely saw the sale and got distracted. I know I was offered a 20% discount from Sound Stage Direct for being a subscriber/customer but forgot to put in a buy. Most Vinyl sellers have 15% sales so often that I don't even consider a buy unless I get 15% off.

Where was the sale you speak of? My favorites are Sound Stage Direct and Elusive Disc but I've found a better deal can be had on some Vinyl and CDs from Amazon. And since I'm a Prime member, the shipping is free regardless of the size of the order. I still haven't purchased from the Japanese Company you buy so much from.

There will be plenty of good sales in the next month...

Oh I know, but if I had known of it earlier I'd have posted it here. It was Acoustic Sounds. I stumbled across a post about it on a music forum and checked in right before the end. I failed to see that they were about to ship it to my previous address even though I had it correct on the order until they were en route. Luckily I was able to call and get the delivery address changed, though that seemed to add two days to the delivery process, and I only moved 70 minutes away. . . .;)

Yeah more sales but I'm saving my money for Japanese reissues. . . I have a number of items bought that release this coming week and I expect more reissue batches in the near future. Right now the Japanese are the ones releasing material I want in better sound and material that was never available on digital disc before.

Lon, I don't get emails from Acoustic Sounds even though I have bought plenty from them. I'll have to go see if they have an email program. I get lots, maybe weekly emails from Elusive Disc and Sound Stage Direct. I should also mention that Music Direct as the distributor for MSFL is also a good place to look.

I've used both Elusive Disc and Music Direct and get emails from both. Both are good companies to use, I have used Music Direct for recordings (they now own Mobile Fidelity Lab and their releases are on their pages first for weeks before they get released to other sources and I usually get the new Dylan and Miles Davis releases pre-ordered from them) and equipment and accessories. A really good company.

Other than the MoFi SACDs I'm most interested in the Japanese releases and use cdjapan.co.jp and other releases I get from Amazon, I'm a Prime member too and free shipping makes them usually the lowest priced and easiest to order from. But then I'm not buying LP reissues.

I need to slow down on buying as I don't have enough income coming in. I keep saying that. One day it might happen.

Playing LP #2 of the Lab 2017 set. I must not have played it before...I would have remembered the Blue Vinyl...#1 is Red vinyl. I dislike the cardboard/paper sleeves...too rough IMO, so I've replaced them with MOFI Original Master Sleeves...

PS...this Band is so good...I have to go see them Live more often. I recently went to their fall concert and discovered it only takes about 30 minutes to get there (Denton, TX)...not sure why I thought it was farther away. So I'll be watching for more opportunities. And the Senior price at their Fall Concert with Christen McBride was a whole $10...no tax. I've gone to several of their concerts at different venues and the prices while much more than on Campus, are always reasonable.

Interesting new SHM-SACD from Universal Japan of Herbie Hancock's "Speak Like a Child" Blue Note.

Very dynamic. . . but otherwise sounding a bit like an RVG mastering to me. (Which is not a terrible thing for me, I'm one of those few who have few problems with the RVG Editions). I have swapped out power tubes in my amp and am playing with my new Decware ZROCK2 so I don't have the cleanest "slate" at the moment for evaluating sonic character.
