The ZROCK with about 3/4 turn on EQ B really helps this recording...

PS...on the prior recording I was hearing some intermittent distortion in the right channel...very minor. I switched to an Amperex 12AU7 in the ZROCK...no change, then replaced the input tubes in the monos to different 7308s...no change. I think it may be the recording. Next listening session I'll switch the Monos so the other amp will be driving the right speaker.

Driving myself a little crazy here. On one track I had distortion again with the Mingus. Long story short...The Monos now have new NOS OA3s, New NOS SV83s, different used RCA 5V4G-STs, and different Amperex 7308s. The distortion remained. So I hooked the CD player to my Taboo MK IV Amp and listened with Audeze Cans...still distortion...so it's either the recording or the Jolida 100 that has two Raytheon Black Plate 12AX7's in it. I'm exhausted. :)

the Next easy thing to do is play the CD in the Cave System to see if it's the recording...which I'm hoping since it'll be a PITA to get to the tubes in the Jolida CDP.

Oh well, fresh tubes in the Monos now... I really didn't want to find an internal problem in one of the Monos...

I have heard many many CD's and digital files with unexplainable distortion, so many in fact that it has contributed to my less than stellar attitude about digital from time to time. Be great if you could point to a scratch and say - yup that's it. But sadly that is almost never the case.
I bring this up because it's easy to get hung up on one CD and drive yourself mad trying to find the problem. You don't even want to know how many times this has made my phone ring.

Also, it has been my observation that the more transparent an amplifier is, the easier this is noticed.

I should also point out that the same is true with LP's. Sometimes there are just issues with the pressing that you own.

At least the distortion is in one place most of the time.

One of my problems with CD's in particular is that when I began the long process of doing error free rips to get a bit perfect copy - many of the CD's had so many errors that it tools hours to rip. I used to write down the track and sector locations for each error until I noticed that the errors show up in different places each time you try to rip the same CD.

Anyway, it's a great topic because a lot of the issues people hear with high-end amplification is artifacts and distortions in the recording itself.

Want to find out if there really IS distortion on the CD, just post the track here on the forum and have everyone stream it with Tidal and see what the results are.

Thanks Steve. I think the only reason I obsessed a bit this time when I heard distortion is because it has occurred with two CDs in less than a week. Now I have these two CDs to check with the Torii and a different CD player...both a Denon CD/SACD player as well as another Jolida 100. I'm hoping it's the CDs but if not, I'll dig the Jolida 100 out and give it a fresh pair of 12AX7s.

In regards to Vinyl, is it my imagination or are the new reissues more prone to defects...warps, non-fill etc than with the 70's and 80's era Vinyl...sure seems that way. I've only returned one LP since I started back into Vinyl but if I returned every LP that had a defect, I'd be sending back about 25% of them. Thanks again, Mark.

I wasn't as picky back in the day. My stylus couldn't track deep in the grooves. Some older lps that look bad play noiselessly since deep in the groove is untouched.

I have put a 6085 in the ZROCK and a little Joni in the CD Player. Let's see what happens... PS...the etchings on both tubes have delta 7...so I assume that's Holland made in 1967...

This is my favorite stereo version of the early albums. "The Ballad of Hollis Brown" especially sounds great in stereo. I like the mono SACDs as well. Most of the early albums sound better in mono.

Testing two newly arrived Amperex White Label 1965 7308s in the Monoblocks...

PS...even right outta the box these 7308s sound great...and the ability of the ZROCK II to get the treble just right is a joy. A bit too hot...turn the knob a bit more. What I have found I like doing is turning the knob all the way to the right, then gradually turn it towards neutral until exactly the right balance for my tastes is reached. Those who are skeptical that the ZROCK could improve your system ...think again. I was in your shoes and after 17 days, I tell you this is one of the best investments you could make in your Hi Fi system. And let me tell you a secret, I have tried three different tubes in the ZROCK...they all sound a bit different, but like in the ZP3, they all sound good.
