"Let It Bleed" was one I did yesterday.

I have been going through a monstrous stack (about seven hundred albums) of new vinyl I have acquired, including some Benny carter, George Benson, Lionel Hampton Al Hirt, Larry Carton, and, unbelievably some sixties era Miles Davis (a couple of these may have more value than the vinyl discovery holds).

I am also actively ripping my favorites to my computer in high resolution settings.

Listening to the new Steve Wilson-engineered remaster again. Really strange to hear this done with such a major change in sonics. Impressive. I think I still prefer the 25th Anniversary version (though that seems to be reviled by many and this new one seems to be the second coming to Tull fans.)

Right now I'd say I prefer the tonality of the 25th and the clarity and dynamics of the 40th.

I held off on this as I have so so many Armstrong discs and much of what is in this set, but the amazon price for this got really "good" and I caved and ordered it. Louis Armstrong, "Ambassador of Jazz."

An amazing box set. Recommended if you're at all interested in this American genius. And for a casual fan, all you may ever need. Or a great start for someone who might become obsessed with Louis.

So, a bunch of guys from work got a wild hair up you know where and the next thing you know I have tickets to see Van Halen. So, I went out and picked up their latest effort which apparently has newly recorded old songs. You might called it NOS Van Halen. Anyway, lots of energy here and some good driving music if you are into going fast on the interstate.

The third disc of the Armstrong box set pictured above. I really have to say they nailed the sound on the early sides. Not noise-reduced to death, dynamics and upper end air in place. Armstrong's blistering talent and brick-oven hot charm come through loud and clear. Such great music. Always pulls me forward out of a fog or funk.

I read the book that came with the box set yesterday. I learned a few things, and that's hard to do with me and Pops, I've read so much about him (and all the books by him).

Jimmy's Joys on Jazz Oracle. This was a band in the Austin-San Antonio area in the twenties and there's lots of local stories among some old timers I know here. There was a two lp set from way back when that was hard to find and a friend transferred it and this new cd sounds better, as it should, as the Jazz Oracle label ALWAYS does a stellar job with transfers, and includes great notes.
