Listening to the Decca duets on disc 1. I love this music. This new set has mastering by Seth Foster and sounds very good.

Listening to this I'm just marveling at how wonderful the system sounds. Monday the Monoblocks will be here. . .probably won't be set up til Tuesday. . . I just find it hard to believe they will make the Taboo Mk IV sound "broken". . . but maybe they will? What a thrill if they do!

Ha! I'll have to be away from a chair or sofa to turn them on, but I'll sit down and use the remote on the transport!

First disc to be played on the 25th Anniversary Monoblocks

"What the World Needs Now: Stan Getz Plays Bacharach and David"

Chose this as it "has it all"--dynamics, a full band, the beautiful sound of Getz, and in some configurations this Verve cd can sound a bit "thin." Not so right now.

I'm not listening per se but watching "Legion" on Blu-ray with lossless PCM sound. Wholy cow. This is the best comic book TV series ever, and I loved it on broadcast and it's blowing my mind even more on this second go-round. And the sound. . .I'm totally immersed in the experience thanks to the Monoblocks.

All the reason the Ultra pre-amp creating an all tube, all Decware home theater reigns supreme.  When you appreciate great sound quality, having the ability to appreciate great sound & music in video productions is something you will not want to ever give up, once you experience it.

Yes, if I were particularly interested in multichannel audio/video I would work hard to have an ultra. I just have never been interested in that and haven't been swayed by what I've heard to move in that direction. Which is good because in my current living situation and with my wife that would not be a possibility and I would just be frustrated. The HR-1s with these moody atmospheric Monoblocks give me about as much "surround sound" as I desire.

Right now
More viola de gamba music.

OK my first post on this topic board and it probably shouldn’t be a rant but here goes.  I’ve been going thru the listening to pages (thru the first 100 and the last 20).  Doesn’t anybody listen to music from this century?  I’m not talking Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift but there must be somebody out there today making significant advances to the medium.   According to my son it’s atonal electronic but that’s not for me.  While many of today’s jazz singers have great voices why they’re just doing covers of standards kills me.  How many times do I need to hear When Sunny Gets Blue and to even think you should try “I’d rather go blind”… forgetaboutit.  Like the Shelby Cobra there’s only one Etta and while you might be able to go faster or stop quicker you’ll never be a Cobra. I’m talking to you Beyonce.

I’m now going to completely contradict myself now and say I believe there are only two types of music. The stuff you enjoy and the stuff you don’t.  The Biebs might have stuff I like,  I’ll never know but where are the Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Louis and Chuck Berry listeners?  This site is really into roots of music with lots of soul and lots of jazz but where’s the love for the beginnings of rock and roll?  The Beatles, The Rolling Stones the Animals have so many covers from those guys but those innovators seem to have been forgotten here.

I’ll admit I’m not a “true” jazz guy.  I’m probably just not smart enough to get the nuance but it sounds a lot like lots of guys playing lots of scales really fast to me.  Don’t get me wrong I love the horns.  Give me the funk,  give me the harmonies. I’m especially a fan of the female vocalist with a special affinity for Soul.  Ella, Etta, Dinah and Sarah… “I’m not worthy”.  Which brings me to my biggest fear that I’m going to be ignored here.   For instance I believe that some of the most original music produced today is of the Country persuasion.  Patty Griffin is my most recent obsession.  With that I’m currently listening to Patty Griffin Silver Bell (which technically was recorded this century in 2000 but wasn’t officially released until 2013).

Hey welcome. I listen to a lot of music created this century actually. We're all different, we all have different tastes and needs met by music.

In the eighties and nineties I was very into the "roots of rock and roll" along with jazz and I learned a lot, and learned to love artists like Louis Jordan, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, T-Bone Walker, and many more. . . . I don't tend to listen to that music much these days but I know it well, even played some of it with like minds in a band I was in.

The young people are going to drive innovations in music and I bet the young people will be the ones that enjoy that the most I think. That said in jazz there are some innovators like Yaz Ahmed and The Sons of Sekhmet and more to explore. . . . I don't always enjoy their work, but I can recognize that they are moving things ahead and enjoy THAT.

That said, I love older music. Right now,

Dana, don't be discouraged.  There are lots of folks here that listen to new music but those who post most do have a bias for 50's to 70's Jazz.  But even Lon and I listen to an incredibly diverse palate of music spanning every period of recorded music and almost all genres. In my case...Rock, Blues, Jazz and Classical from all time periods, yet I admit looking at what we spin sometimes, that would be lost on newcomers. I have discovered new albums and artists to explore here and I know my posts have inspired others to try artists and albums new to them.  That's really what this thread is about. So I hope you stick around and participate.  Mark.

I have avoided buying this LP for decades because it has Fender Rhodes on it and rationalized there is so much Bill Evans with only Acoustic Piano...why bother.  Well, I bought a lot of 8 Bill Evans LPs, and this was included...I'll have a listen...

PS...so far only electric piano on the first cut. This is a typically wonderful Evans album...feeling a little stupid for having avoided it so long... Gorgeous!

Slim Gaillard by way of Spotify. It's funny hearing the pops and hiss.  These must have been remastered from 78s.
Does mp3 matter on material this old?

I don't/won't listen to MP3. I don't know what material is on Spotify because I don't stream and they make "new" covers for material, this probably was mastered from 78s, the bulk of Slim's recordings were before the LP era. But mastering and format matters. .. always in my opinion.

I do listen to streaming music on Spotify sometimes with my second system via laptop>Red Dragonfly DAC>CSP3>Zen Signature Monoblocks (SE84ZSM)>Zu Audio "Soul" speakers...a ZROCK II is in there too.  I think it sounds great.  I use the free service that is 160 kbps, with the paid service you can up that to 320. Spotify often has different versions of the same music/albums.  The pre-tape era recordings are not of the same quality as later recordings, obviously.  Mark.

That Bill Evans LP is definitely not a favorite of mine.  Not even sure I've listened to it though it is on the Complete Verve Recordings Box Set. His Trios are the preferred format.

Chet Baker is another favorite.  You likely already know but for others, all you have to do is right click the LP Photo and click on "Search Google for Image" and you'll be taken to many links for the album...even if there are no words on the album cover.  Mark.
