Monday Michiru "Co-Collaborators" . . . a dance remix album that is fun to listen to. My wife was in the mood and allowed it to spin and is dancing about while making me breakfast. (As I'm retired I handle all meals during the week--she loves my cooking, that's one reason she's mine!--and she makes me a great breakfast spread on the weekends.) Lucy dancing is a great thing!

The music and narration on this may not be for everyone, but there's some excellently recorded percussion pieces/instances on this that really come alive on a Decware amp.

Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" Sony Japan SACD, Quadrophonic

This just arrived from Japan. I'm listening to the stereo layer--I don't do multichannel. Sounds very good. VERY good. Beautiful packaging too. The oversized glossy laminated cover is beautiful to behold and hold.

What a facinating story.  Jimmy Scott imparts such feeling into the songs it's hard not to pulled in

You didn't finish the story about this album. I believe it wasn't released til 2001 due to the fact that Scott was under contract to Savoy when it was recorded though he may have felt that he wasn't as he hadn't recorded for them for a while.

I think I have all of Scott's official recordings but I confess I hardly listen to his earliest work, I find his voice from the 'nineties on to be fascinating and his mature work so full of emotion. This post prompted me to dig out and listen to (via headphones) one of my favorites of his. . . .

Jimmy Scott is a new disovery for me and what I've heard is so cabptivating.  When he sings Motherless Child he really did loose his mom in his early teens. then you read about his being rediscoved years after his first recording contract in abject poverty and it all seems to come out in incredable phrasing and emotion.  Man I love how music makes me feel.

For a little additional information lifted from Wikipedia: His unusual singing voice was due to Kallmann syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that limited his height to 4 feet 11 inches (150 cm) until the age of 37, when he grew by 8 inches (20 cm). The syndrome prevented him from reaching classic puberty and left him with a high voice

Now listening to

Duke Ellington & John Coltrane
Duke Ellington and John Coltrane
Recorded on September 26, 1962, and released in February 1963

You convinced me.

Yes that syndrome gave him a unique sound and his experiences and his "nature" I suppose gave him this great emotional expressiveness. "Dream" is a good one.

Listening to disc 2 of this new Quadrophonic SACD (I'm listening to the stereo layer) with my Sennheiser HD800S driven by the CSP3-25 and the Taboo Mk IV. A new headphone set up for me that is really hitting all the spots!

Like Lon, I see, some Ellingtonia here (as often). Hung up on Anatomy of a Murder in particular at present, the 1999 CD reissue with the extra material. The EQ (and mix at times) isn't my ideal but thankfully lots of vitality comes through. The project on the whole is rushed and sketchy in some respects but it really strikes me none the less. Sunswept Sunday above all, personally. I also enjoy some of the material as it turned up on the 1959 Live at the Blue Note set.

Out-of-step, I agree, there's energy and meaty themes here. I wish Mobile Fidelity Labs or Analogue Productions or ORG would do an SACD of this and restore the sound.

I like the Blue Note versions and also versions of a few of these themes done at Antibes from that complete set.

Oh me too. It'd be a job (assembling varied original elements, finding all the desired bits, remixing etc) I'm afraid may never be done again let alone by MoFi et al. So I always try to take a "well I'm glad this was done as well as it was" tack when I delve into it.

There's just no band like that! The synthesis of it with Duke and (IMH) brilliant material like that turns my world in an extra sublime way.

Unfortunately I've never heard the Antibes set.

DPC,
They originally were similar eras so so I could see that.  I'm still trying to get my arms around Jimmy Scott's career.  The stuff I've heard isn't doo wap but the stuff on his second career (in the 90's)  is pretty cool.

I'm listening to the excellent two cd set "Sound" Solo Piano by Randy Weston. Wow. I'm going to be missing this man for a long time.

I couldn't find a good pic of just the release so here's a promo pic for the cd release party.

Listening to disc 2 of this new Quadrophonic SACD (I'm listening to the stereo layer) with my Sennheiser HD800S driven by the CSP3-25 and the Taboo Mk IV. A new headphone set up for me that is really hitting all the spots!

http://www.plosin.com/images/covers/Bitches-CBSQ-1.jpg

Back to disc one via headphones (my wife is off today and was off yesterday). Really enjoying the sound of this . . . I've rolled tube and tweaked my headphone setup over the weekend and yesterday and boy oh boy am I a happy listener.

Disc one of the new nineteen disc box set from the Grateful Dead, "The Pacific Northwest '73 - '74"

Takes about six songs before the engineer has the sound mixed just right. . . but the sound is then excellent.

Beautiful packaging.  This box is big!

"Sarah Vaughan and the Jimmy Rowles Quintet" Mainstream Records/Solid Records Japan cd.

One of my very favorite Sarah recordings. . . mainly because I love Jimmy Rowles.

Bass – Monty Budwig
Drums – Donald Bailey
Piano – Jimmy Rowles
Tenor Saxophone – Teddy Edwards
Trumpet – Al Aarons

Wilburys! I'll have to give that a spin soon, it's been ages.

Some recents:

CCR - Willy and the Poor Boys

... some of which has never been more timely, eh?

Barney Kessel & Shelly Manne & Ray Brown
The Poll Winners Ride Again!

From the top shelf of jazz musicians. Such a pleasure to listen to. The vivid stereo recording is icing on the proverbial cake.

Reliving my early adulthood crush on the music of Flora Purim lately.

Flora Purim "Open Your Eyes You can Fly"

Airto and Flora later led me to seek out and love Brazilian music.
