Been revisiting Cassandra Wilson's work this year (and the final quarter of last year) and have fallen in love with her work again.

She has such a unique voice and her phrasing also became her own. She has always had interesting musicians in her sessions who challenge and complement her.

Without being in any way melismatic or theatrical she can convey emotion subtly or strongly. The very timbre of her instrument draws me in. She can whisper or roar. The center of her sound reminds me of the chalimeau register of a wooden clarinet.

She's just a few months younger than I am. I'd love to have a long conversation with her one day. That's an open invitation Cassandra, my wife won't mind.

Her Austin City Limits performance showcasing "Coming Forth by Day" was stupendous, I hope it one day makes it to disc.

We're also overdue for a new album. I hope we get one soon.

A few weeks ago I listened to the originally released version of this with differing personnel because I couldn't find the copy of this version I had. . . . I ended up ordering a new reissue of the session with Dolphy from Japan.

I like both versions. I've purposefully been staying away from Ellington material because I feel a bit Ducal listening spree on the horizon and didn't want to jump start it (winter somehow brings me to Dukes musical world) but darn it I can't help it, Hamilton and group have such a nice view into these compositions.

Parts of it when Sonny is laying out sound like the Grateful Dead. . . surprised me.

Because they sounded so good earlier in the week I've replayed "The Complete Sonny Rollins in Japan" SHM-CD disc 2, and the recent Japanese SHM-CD of Chico Hamilton's "The Original Ellington Suite" . . . and now I'm spinning another SHM-CD, Donald Byrd "At the Half Note Cafe Vol. 1" (the recent reissue of the RVG Edition from Japan with bonus tracks). Sounds very nice.

Duke Ellington "Blues in Orbit" Analogue Productions SACD

As a long-time Ellington NUT I always wondered why this one got cited so often by those who really aren't Ellington nuts ever since the first SACD version (by MFSL) came out. But since then and playing it a lot more I realize that this one really does offer a LOT. Sam Woodyard so well captured swinging with that huge sound, Gonsalves at his slurriest, Ray Nance on violin, great interjections from Duke. . . . And sound that makes you notice. Just have to play it every now and then.

This one again. I had not explored Byrd's Concord years before this and have to say that was a mistake--some great music on the three discs I have.

I really enjoy Jobim in the wintertime. The sunny Brazilian "vibe" is welcome, and alternately the melancholy, the "saudade" in the music seems fitting with snow on the ground and the bare trees brandishing snow.

I acknowledge his skill and influence, but his personality rubs me wrong and seems to pervade his vocal performances to me. Dial&Oatts, Rich DaRosa, the WDR Big Band "Rediscovered Ellington: New Takes on Duke's Rare & Unreleased Music." Has that WDR Big Band sound that I'm not entirely fond of, but it features some interesting arrangements and great playing.
