Listened to the Blu-Spec CD2 version from Japan of Miles Davis "Someday My Prince Will Come". . . sounds great.

"Teo" here got me thinking about the ballet "The Three Cornered Hat" so I had to listen to a few versions of that.

Da Falla "The Three Cornered Hat" Ansermet and Orchestra Suisse-Romande on Decca cd

and Jorda with the LSO on Everest cd

Salena Jones "Salena Sings Jobim with the Jobims"

This one again. Perfect for headphones on a sunny cold Sunday morning.

Listening to the Sennheiser HD800S on the CSP3-25 fed by the Oppo UDP-205. I miss the refinement that the PS Audio DSD brings (that's now upstairs and not connected to a headphone amp) but the Oppo adds a bit of bass heft that helps these particular headphones out, though there's a certain phasiness/edge with the treble that I hear on Sabre DACs. It's not at all bad on these headphones, worse over the HR-1s. I'm hoping a ZROCK2 will help with that. . .I'll find out next week.

Listening to some of the Beethoven pieces for piano-violin-cello trio in the Beaux Arts Trio complete Decca Recordings box set.

With ZROCK2 in place, in the new system in the living room. This is the first time the music really sounds right as it is the first day with a ZROCK2 in this system. As soon as I set this system up without one I knew I needed one and boy was I right. Just a dab and everything comes into focus--the cello has just the right flesh and bones, the piano resonates and the pizzicato violin is precise and quick. Ah. . . I'm happy.

First off today I listened to the first disc of Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" Columbia 2 LP set, the copy that I bought in '72 and have played over and over. Still sounds great, I have great reverence for this material and have taken care of the LPs over the years.

Now, a new addition to my collection. I don't have many Mosaic LP sets, but plucked this one off eBay at a great price and though I have the music elsewhere (digital mainly) I know that the LPs of earlier jazz music sound so good I couldn't resist. Disc I, the Edmond Hall session with Charlie Christian.

I popped in a newly acquired pair of 1967 Amperex Holland orange globe 6DJ8's from a quad with the exact same date codes and extremely well balanced and matched per a Hickok TV-7.  I couldn't pass them up at $59.50 plus shipping. This pair has balanced  plates and are matched to each other at 2%.  I have tried the orange globe 6922s  and wasn't impressed but Joe of "Joe's Tube Lore" really liked these 6DJ8s so I thought I'd try them.  Bottomline...Fantastic tubes in my Rachel.  Joe described them thus... "Amperex 6DJ8, Orange globe logo, Holland (shield, steel pins). Warm, vibrant, lively, grainless, transparent Amperex sound. Killer tube."

CD#2 or 6...

Yes Lon, I have more than one lifetime's worth of tubes.  I like the Amperex Family of input tubes so that's mainly what I buy now although the prices have gotten a bit ridiculous since I started buying 5 years ago.  It is fun finding bargains...If I were to put my RCA/Cunningham Type 80 back in my Rachel, the very nice complement of tubes would have cost a grand total of $41.  Soon I need to take out the Tung Sol 5881 power tubes that I've been running for about 4 months, and put my Siemens/RFT  EL-34s back in.  But these 5881s are so good, so I continue to delay.

I have read a little about the Sophia Aqua 274B rectifiers you use but at more than 3 times what I've paid for my many NOS Mullard GZ 32's, I can wait for a bargain.  I have my doubts that I'd be able to hear much improvement over the Mullards.  I still check ebay for tubes but my buying has slowed to a trickle. Mark.

Last week I just did another comparison of a pair of Mullard GZ32 I've had for a spell (bought them late last year due to all the applauds here in the forum for these rectifiers) in the Monoblocks and I couldn't keep them in long, the Aquas went back in. I am using that pair in my CSP2+ and Taboo Mk III until I get more Aquas, which I use in my Monoblocks, Taboo Mk IV and CSP3. They are simply the best rectifiers I've used, so "invisible," doing everything right and not calling attention to their own signature. I hope you can find a bargain one day to check them out. . . . I haven't seen bargains.

Anyway there are so many great possibilities for tube complements. We live in a great time, but grabbing NOS bargains when we see them makes sense in this day and age, they're getting long in the tooth.

Lon, have you tried a 5Z4G rectifier in the past.  I'm reading now trying to figure out if it is ok  to use in Decware Gear.  Apparently similar to Type 80's.  Not sure how many pins they have but I have lots of adaptors.

No I haven't. I'm so happy with the Aquas that I'm not investigating anew either. If it's like the Type 80, okay, good stuff. I have three pairs of those and two single. . . not using them at present.

Downstairs, at my wife's request (she was running late and pretty frantic and wanted to chill down and said "play that singer;" that either means Hartman or Jose James, today it meant Hartman!)

"John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman," Impulse Japan SHM-CD this time.

Followed by, upstairs on the main system
"Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins/Duke Ellington and John Coltrane" Impulse 2 Fer, Universal Europe

Mark I've been looking at that tube and I'm not sure it's compatible with the Decware amps. Maybe. . .Steve would be the one to know for sure. Here's a spec page in case you haven't seen it:

Yeah, I looked at that page Lon.  I was thinking that since it had those 80 tubes listed below that they would work.  I decided not to try them since I have so many already...unlikely they would be better, although they sure are cheaper.  Also the listing I was looking at seemed to be for tubes made in the early 70's if I'm reading the codes correctly...I passed.  FYI...I put the type 80 in the Racheal so I've got my $41 tube complement in now...sounds amazing for $41...actually for any amount of money Smiley...

That's good. I won't encourage you to try the Aquas then as I don't want to upset the apple cart. I like Type 80, I like 5V4 and GZ32 too, keep swapping those three types in and out. . . when I don't have an Aqua. The Aqua though just stays in when it hits a component. Freaking interesting tube that is so open and clear.

I'll likely try the Aqua eventually.  I remember in my CSP-3 when I was having trouble with too much highend in my main system/HR-1s, I kept the Valve Art 274B in for a long time...so I'm sure I'd like the aqua...

The Valve Art seemed to add warmth in addition to taming the highs, as I recall...

I wouldn't say the Aquas add warmth, everything is just so right, maybe they are it's hard to explain, they are like the ZTPRE in comparison to the CSP3: everything is right but not calling attention to itself, as if it were invisible.

I liked the Valve Art for a long time but then with some complements I really liked they just aren't right. I still have two that I pop in now and then when I experiment with other tubes.

I've decided the next time I fire up Rachel, I'll tube roll to my favorites...RFT EL 34s, Mullard GZ 32 and Amperex White Label 7308's...

That's going from a tube compliment that cost me $41 to one that cost about $250...not including postage
