I'm listening to an amazing forty minute bonus feature on this excellent Blu-ray. First off the movie itself is absolutely fascinating and the soundtrack is excellent and I was wondering who that was and what music was used. Then I switched to the bonus section which features a forty minute feature about the composer and rehearsals and recordings for the sound track Unbelievable sound. It's only 16/48 PCM, but I would use this as a showcase for the system. Just sings.The orchestration is six voices, an organ, a large recorder, and a cello. The composer also demonstrates a five string cello he had designed both solo and with pipe organ accompaniment. There's also an endearing segment where the composer plays his cello and sings a bit for his infant daughter. Heart-warming.

Just excellent all around, the film and its prehistoric images and informative narrators, the featurette, the sound.

GP is a great country rock album, his first solo album after the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers. He's backed by most of Presley's band, including James Burton on guitar, that would go on to become Emmylou Harris' Hot Band. Emmylou is also featured prominently here on her first major label exposure. Really good stuff.

I'll have to pick up the Santana.

Yes, I'm sure it is. I'm just not really into country rock.

Santana however is someone I immediately connected to when I first heard him way back when. Like Jimi and Miles and Duke and Monk and Mingus.

I surprised the hell out of myself today. I wanted to try out the DEC 685 that I have had for so long, and have been using in the bedroom system, in the main system. I put it in place of the new Denon SACD player. Holy smoke! Connected up to a PS Audio PerfectWave AC-12 cord and with the cryoset.com ICs, I was blown away at how it sounds. As good as the Denon, with that glorious Decware tube sound right attached to the backside. Totally surprised me. The Denon is sounding really good in the bedroom right now, and it has the added advantage of improving my Blu-ray and TV sound through it's DACs. Redbook sounds a bit better out of the Denon due I think to the AL32 processing, but SACD is a dream on the DEC 685.

Anyway, the DEC 685 was one of the best investments I ever made. I don't know why it was skipping on some cds years ago and caused it to be put away for a few years. It hasn't skipped since I brought it back into action.

Would love to hear the DEC. Always on the lookout for a used one. Of course you already have me considering the Denon even though I have the Sony XA5400 and an Oppo 83SE, and cd/SACD is not my primary medium. Does the madness ever stop???n

Just got this in this afternoon and enjoying the heck out of it...on vinyl! Cherry is the star but man could Barbieri blow...

Sam, after some interesting comparisons between the DEC 685 and the Denon, I've come to this conclusion:

The Denon has wonderful tonality. There's no question that the DAC is better on this machine, and the output stage is very well done with a nice power supply. The tonality is more accurate on the Denon. Beautiful and delicate when needed. Raw and crunchy when required. More refined in this arena than the DEC 685.

The DEC 685 has an amazing range of dynamics, and a more vivid presentation, a strong sound stage image. And I can tube roll, and have that tube sound.

Two sides of a very valuable coin. The Denon improves my second system as the Redbook on that is better than the Redbook on the DEC 685. So it's going to stay in there for a while. I can love the SACD sound on either in my main system. Both are very musical and engrossing.

Your SCD-XA5400ES is a very good machine; I had one as my main source for a few years. Seems sort of poised mid-way between the DEC 685 and Denon in character.

I like my machines a lot. I just like to try new things is all. In the olden days that kind of attitude could be dangerous. Nowadays it's the only experimentation that I do that still brings me a great deal of pleasure. And ain't bad for my health either. If the Denon gets down to a grand or so I could see myself jumping. I've always had good luck with their stuff.

My first listen this morning through the 5400 was Henry Grimes "The Call"

Good for getting the morning eyes open. But now after a bit of fine tuning of the turntable it's time to start dancing, so...

I'm doing some tube-rolling to see what tube sets in the CSP2 bring out the best of the sources and justify it being in the system. So far a Philips 6922 has surprised me as being quite nice for most material and sources. . . I'll keep it in for a spell. And now on to rolling rectifiers; right before I took the CSP2 out last time I won on ebay three different 5Y3GT tubes (a batch).

This is such a great sounding cd!

Well, things move quickly in my household. I blew two fuses trying rectifier tubes in the CSP2 and cut my losses and restored the system to source direct into Torii mode. And you know what? It sounds so good that why do I want to change it? I don't need to.

Had a lot of fun in the second system last night, and having some fun now in the main system.

I finally thought it was time to roll tubes on the preamp that arrived yesterday. It had some rather unrecognizable ones in and I replaced them with the first matched pair of 12AU7s I found on hand, some GEs, the sound improved by a good step. The preamp is very clear and dynamic, if a bit brighter than I'd like, but it's still early.

I'm still awaiting my Rega and some cabling to make the cabling more consistent and better, so I'm reserving serious judgment here. But sound is quite satisfying. The PS Audio GCPH is a wonderful phono preamp.

Can't wait for all the equipment to be here and set up. A few more days for most, hard to say when a few of the cables will arrive.
