Charles Mingus "Mingus Ah Um" Mobile Fidelity Lab

I listened to this SACD again and I have to say. . . I wouldn't change a thing about the sound. This listen made me clearly realize how amazing the original engineering was for this record--the engineering tells the story of the arrangements and soloists and the ebullient leader and his direction. The tonal balance, the resolution that resolves the direct and ambient sound, the dynamics. . . this is a great sounding disc.

And I have listened to two more of the 80th Anniversary CDs from Blue Note Japan, Lou Donaldson's "Lou Takes Off" and Donald Byrd's "Blackjack." Both sounded very good.

Lon, I really love Columbia recordings from this era. Everyone talks about Blue Note and Rudy Van Gelder, but Columbia's recordings were right there with them. As a matter of fact, Mingus said that he was not pleased at all with Van Gelders techniques, especially the way his bass was recorded.

This album and Art Blakey Moanin' were my introduction to jazz, and they are "desert island" recordings for me.

But this is a great recording to begin with, and this audiophile mastering really is just that.

Geno, Poor Rudy, he receives so many "blows" . . . in part because who else recorded as much as he did? Six decades plus of recordings that he lorded over and put his stamp on. He had a methodology and stuck with it. Sometimes the recordings are amazing such as "Idle Moments," "Bossa Nova Soul Samba" and many more.

I agree that the recordings that Columbia did during this period could sound fantastic and often did. They were a big company with a staff of engineers and producers who were well-paid and did very good work for the most part. And for some time they had that 300th St. studio that was a wonderful space they learned to use very well. Some of these recordings are fantastic. This one and "Dynasty" by Mingus are tremendous, as are "Jazz Party" and "Indigos" by Duke Ellington.

Very good, Lon. I know I don't need more vinyl or CDs but as you know, it's an addiction. I looked at some of the for sale ads and ended up ordering a copy of "Mel Torme/George Shearing: The Complete Concord Recordings". I have a lot of this on vinyl but since I haven't been in the Cave for nearly a year, I thought I'd pick all these up on CD from ebay for a steal...$35 including shipping.

T0day I continued listening to more of the 80th Anniversary CDs from Blue Note Japan (Universal). These s0und very good. My system is really shining due to a change I'm glad I made, and these new cds are shining right along with the system.

I listened to:

"Cliff Jordan"
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers "At the Jazz Corner of the World, VOl. 2"
Elvin Jones "Merry Go Round"
"Lou Donaldson +3"

I also listened to the new reissue of "The Complete Birth of the Cool" that was released Friday.

Sound on the studio recordings is very good. It's a bit better than my previous "favorite" version of this, the "Special Edition RVG" from TOCJ Japan, which I think sounds best with the "Phase" button in the "OUT" position on my DAC. Sound between these two is very close, but this new one has a bit more "punch" and the midrange is a bit less "thick," more open.

The live stuff. . . still doesn't sound that great. The sound on the previous release from the US may even be a bit better, but I haven't made a direct comparison.

No, Blu-Spec CD2 is a printing process and material improvement on Redbook cd (that I hear) but in the case of these Miles Davis cds (and most of the Blu-Spec CD2 put out by Sony) they reuse previous masterings, usually the most recent Japanese. Most of these are different (newer) masterings than are in the Complete Columbia Albums box set.

I mainly listen to SACDs, the Sony and Mobile Fidelity. I think the Redbook layer of the Mobile Fidelity might be the best (it's a hybrid). I also like the DVD layer of the Dual Disc that Columbia put out. Other than these, I think perhaps the Blu-Spec CD2 which I sold may be the best.

Yes, I think it sounds amazing to be honest. I'll note that it is the original mix, the original version that includes some edited tracks as opposed to the versions we've gotten since the 'nineties of the unedited tracks. That said, I fell in love with the original version before the unedited appeared, and this SACD sounds fantastic as an SACD--I've never heard this sound better.

I just read the wiki article on "It Can Only Happen with You" and totally disagree with the review there. Too bad this was Duke's final album as he was one of the very finest American jazz musicians interpreting and arranging the then changing Brazilian music and I would have loved to see how that developed. He was far too young, we should have had many more years of his great work.

Now something very different, Larry Young "Heaven on Earth" on a Blue Note 80th Anniversary reissue cd from Japan.

I confess I disagree with the review quoted in the wiki article for this album as well. What a shame we lost Larry Young so early as well. He was an explorer!
