My HR-1s are sounding so great I'm not having Betsy envy, little or big.

Listened to Joe Henderson "Four" on Verve, material recorded live at the Left Bank Society with the Wynton Kelly Trio, Verve cd. Man this is good.

Then for something completely different I put on Candido, "Beautiful" -- 80th Anniversary cd reissue from Blue Note Japan.

And to keep in the spirit of single word titles, I'm spinning Airto, "Identity" Warner Japan cd.

Yesterday I got a box in the mail from CDJapan with the August 14 batch of 80th Anniversary Blue Note cd reissues.

Listened so far to:

Lou Donaldson "Gravy Train". . . this is a great date with great tunes and Lou's horn sounds glorious.

Lonnie Smith "Drives" . . . .funky and driving bottom end on this one.

Horace Silver "Serenade to a Soul Sister" . . . nice sound, Turrentine and Cobham especially are standing out in the current presentation my system is delivering.

OOn the main system, three great sounding Blue Note cds released in Japan the last few months:

"Kenny Burrell and John Jenkins"--a bright recording that sounds much better in this incarnation than the previous US version.

Big John Patton "Accent on the Blues" . . . a young James "Blood" Ulmer, before the "Blood" and playing some awesome guitar.

Jimmy Smith "Prayer Meeting" . . . Stanley Turrentine is so good on this, and the group really is arranged to showcase the dynamics that they can provide.

And on the headphone system (my CSP2+ with Anniversary mods was returned yesterday from a checkup)

Duke Ellington "Ellington Indigos" Impex gold cd.

This is such an exquisitely engineered album. From microphone placement to reverb this is so carefully crafted to suit and support the wonderful music.

Coleman Hawkins All Stars "Swingville" OJC cd. This is such a swinging session. The way that Wendall Marshall is recorded just makes it so. Joe and Vic do some whack playing here. Maybe there was one too many bottles on a sideboard in the studio. Regardless, Hawk is so authoritative and Tommy so fluid and full of ideas. . . Man I dig it.

I've been slowly purchasing albums from the Blue Note 75th Anniversary series. So far, so good. I have a few others on the way as well. Right now listening to a Blue Note playlist on Spotify (gasp!). A travesty, I know.

It's not a travesty to use a streamer. I don't use them myself, but I'm a person who has deliberately let technology pass me by and it suits me.

I love the Japanese 75th Anniversary Blue Note cds. . . I missed a few when they came out and now am hunting for good prices on those I want. I'm really enjoying the 80th Anniversary editions, and it seems that series has ended, as no more are scheduled that I can tell for the year. They did good!
