The magic tubes in the preamp of those I have on hand are a pair of Hewlett-Packard labeled that I got in a grab bag off ebay some years back. Very dynamic and rich sounding. Matches the sound from the GCPH very keenly. Oddly enough, it doesn't sound that great with the Denon SACD player, which is the other source connected to it. I have a long wait for the CSP2+. . . .

Listening for the fourth time the past few days to one of my favorite lps ever . . . .

Listening to one of the first Miles Davis lps I purchased that was recorded before 1969. . . and in this "Reissued by popular demand" Columbia edition. This started me listening to "acoustic" Miles Davis and I can still feel that exciting swing between Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and Wynton Kelly as if it were the first time.

And I realized listening to this that over the years I've been trying, with a lot of success, to make my digital playback sound like vinyl. Something which I think Steve tried to point out to me a few times.

I love the earliest and earlier Miles, but I find bebop and hard bop too strict a formula for me to enjoy hour after hour of listening year after year. When Miles moved into the modal and then freer jazz forms he really came into his own for me.

I splurged and bought some of the recent Columbia/Sony Legacy Hendrix LP reissues. The original core lps were among the first lps I bought and went into a frenzied listening orbit over back in my teens, and the nostalgic element is a large draw for me. Plus Hendrix has always remained an important artist in my life, influencing me as a musician, a music lover, and human being. I read that Columbia/Sony did a great job with these and they did: great covers, 180 gram LPs, RTI pressed. They sound simply amazing. If I'd heard them like this forty years ago I probably would have just had my head explode.

Axis sounds astonishingly good on this pressing.

On Ritenour, I have several GRP's featuring him, from early to mid 90's, but after a while I felt his playing not too involving. Sound quality always excellent from GRP though.

Well, I'm generally not a Ritenour fan either, but this live show is different from much of what I've heard from him before, quite different from GRP work, a label I really don't like. I bought it because it was cheap, and have been seriously surprised at the quality. And the HD Master sound quality is just out of this world good.

The Savoy lp I have more for the work of Moore and Eager. I like later Getz and Getz recorded over and over, Moore and Eager not so much.
