Duke Ellington Orchestra "LIEDERHALLE STUTTGART 1967" Jazz Art House cd

From the Count to the Duke. This is a very interesting concert in surprisingly good sound.

After a year and a half of living here, I am still unpacking boxes. I don't mean boxes I have acquired recently in this case, but my old racks of music CDs are still not organized well.

Did not forget this one, but I have not heard it in a while. It goes great with morning coffee, watching a heavy fog burn off.

This is new, 2017 release. Can't find it listed on Discogs. I got this from Amazon after following an article from AAJ talking about him going on without the Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

Here it is on discogs--they have it listed with a few others as "Oscar Hernandez & Alma Libre"

Nice!
Thanks, Lon. I suppose I gave up too soon.
It's a fun album.
New, but not from a new soul. He's been around for a while.

This is the latest I have.

Oscar Hernández & Alma Libre – Love The Moment

If it seems as if I went on a shopping spree just before we moved, I did. I bought lots of stuff I had been reading about, streaming on occasion and wanting actual discs to hold.
Actually about two years worth of CD purchasing at a high level for me.
Then we found out the city is taking our home.
I became a bit more tight pocketed at that point.

Yes, I can imagine impulse shopping slowed at that point! I still keep buying even though I should stop. I need to have a talk with myself.

I can remember once in a discussion many years ago of how the leaning from the industry was to end production of physical media, cursing us with nothing but digital downloads and your position was that you had enough music on hand to last the rest of your life.

It struck me with a light green envy at the time, but it got me thinking that I will be OK, too.
The rise of the Audiophile Collections seems to have had a hand in saving some aspects of the industry for the short term.

Understanding all that does not mean I've quit chasing "shiny" when I see it.

Smiley

Go ahead and have a talk with yourself, but see that you win the argument.

I'm good at compromising with myself. Or is that. . .compromising myself.

You're right in that audiophile labels are feeding the needs in may ways and churning out discs. But even if no new ones are pressed there are billions of cds out there to be had. And even collecting jazz for fifty years. . . there's so many more to explore.

Life is good in many ways in this modern time, not good in some.

Just continuing to roll with this box of stuff I bought a few years back.
The goal is to get them out where I can find them easily, but it's been a while since I heard some of these.

Newish, this century. Again from my old racks.

I understand you seldom bother with streaming anything.
I usually consider streaming a research method, unless I am looking for some background music for some odd gathering. Streaming is perfect for that sort of non-listening, most of the time.

As for finding music I might not have known about without the ability, articles to guide me to artists I've never heard, streaming music is a new found treasure for me.

Most of the indy labels have a monthly newsletter release and as much as I despise spam in my inbox, I love to find a new artist from The Balkans, Laplands or Europe somewhere, newly prominent African faces, etc.

But hey, reading about a new artist beats the Hell out of yet another Type II Diabetes medication ad or some new way to beat nail fungus or sidestep Social Security guidelines in my inbox.

My point is, streaming, after reading a press release is how I found out about his band and I like them.

That's cool. I don't do ANY streaming of music and am not likely to start. I have my own ways of finding "new" music that involve reading online and recommendations from friends. And. . . I really should be cutting back on new music, so don't want to expand that exploration with streaming.

I am what I yam.

This is the Jazz Masters Collection I brought up earlier.
It is by no means complete.
There is one CD listed from Blossom Dearie, #51 (not included here), but there are only a patchy twenty two Verve LPs in this batch.

All compilations, of course, but the two pressings I've heard are quite nice and I would judge them as "quiet" compared to so many other down and dirty compilations I have.

This one is particularly nice and the track arrangement is very pleasant.

Wondering why this next box was a little shaky, since so much care was taken to keep LPs from even leaning a little while in storage, I found no CDs nor LPs in the carton.
It is all reel to reel tapes, eighteen of them. Three are Miles Davis, Water Babies, Workin' and Live-Evil.

My Crown is the one in better shape, adjusted most recently and it has a slow wind function. Only trouble is I can't find any of my blank aluminum reels. Oh,well, plastic it is.
I intend to wind it through before I play it.
Easy to forget how much time all this takes. LPs are fidgetty enough, but R to R can take longer, especially if you do not know how long a precious tape has been stored.
It's not really special, just a typical production run on 7" reeel at 3 3/4IPS, probably a little rare, though.

This is next on reel to reel after a bit more fidgetting:

Very cool to have that on reel-to-reel. Reel-to-reel is something I had experience with in the late 'seventies via a friend's deck, not any since. Still remember how Jefferson Airplane (his favorite) sounded cranked through that system.

David Murray put me to sleep. . . and Lucy woke up. Music on pause for a while.

Yes, very cool!
I don't have great R to R rigs. I only have an old Crown, which works fine and a Revox in need of a lube and alignment. I also have complete rubber kits for each when the time comes back around and a spare set of heads for the Crown.

I used to run a Studer A812 when I still had my sound reinforcement business going, and recorded every show I could.
Many bands did not care and half did not care enough to even know I was recording the show. I have many old live tapes to sort some day!
I wanted to keep it, but that floor standing Studer still had a lot of dollar value when I sold off most of that gear.

This is a well mixed bag of odd tapes and I am glad to have them all.
There are also two Brubecks, A Duke, Oscar Peterson, Blind Faith, Disraeli Gears, Doobies 1st, Beatles White Album, Abbey Road and a few more, but to me the cream of the mismatched crop, Electric Ladyland.

Obviously, this is a "buy what ever you find when you find it" collection. They are all 3 3/4 ips, small reel, mill run production.
Miles Davis, Live - Evil sounds great! I only have an early run CD to compare it to, though. Hands down, analog rules!

Electric Ladyland is next after some fiddling.

Sometimes, it is the arduous fiddling that makes me switch from one format thing to another.

Playing Brubeck's Take Five tape and moving back to far less venal bribery via CDs for a while.

I heard a jazz version of "Breathe" yesterday (Pink Floyd) and it kind of disgusted me.
Now, I love DSOTM! But to hear a jazz group eff it up with what they tried to do was not anything I ever want to hear again. It was hideous!

Just to clear my head, I'm playing Pink Floyd, Dark Side Of The Moon and then the live version I have on Bluray, "Pulse."

Do not ever pretend that you can bring further measure to a classic pop/rock endeavor by using a horn band and a rapper. It was obviously a rapper doing the vocal parts who could not sing his way out of a catbox.

Opinionated? A bit. Getting over it? Soon.

I don't even want to hear Pink Floyd (burned out on their material long ago as it was overplayed and constantly played) let alone jazz versions! Wink

Had to take time off to be available for the cable guy. Though our cable remained connected though the tornado minutes, it was blown out of its roost and lying across the ground.

Now back to the music. . . going further back than I have lately, to a disc which is one in a series of cds put out with an English magazine, all remastered by the late great J.R.T. Davies.

Count Basie's first recording for Pablo Records, a jam that is interesting in that Irving Ashby of Nat Cole Trio fame is on board. Great horn players too. And the Count plays organ as well as piano.

Count Basie - organ, piano
Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - tenor saxophone
Zoot Sims
J.J. Johnson - trombone
Harry "Sweets" Edison - trumpet
Irving Ashby - guitar
Ray Brown - double bass
Louie Bellson - drums

I could wish this concert was better recorded, but I'm happy that it sounds better on this Octave/Mack Records cd than an earlier cd and the LP i had--due I bet in large part to the use of the Plangent Process.

I think this is the last live concert of Garner's recorded and released. And it sure is a good one.

That is very nice, Lon, "Amazonia,"  but I balk at the price and availability seems to be just as troubling.
Amazon can hook me up in October with a used copy for $41.
A Discogs seller offered one for eleven Euros, but was out of stock.
I'll look a bit later to find this one.

I like it, but for now it will live as a playlist entry on my Tidal account.

Coincidentally, our little chiweenie (dachshund/chihuahua mix) woke me up fairly early as well. He sleeps with my daughter, but even two rooms away behind closed doors, his bark sounds like someone hammering on thick glass.
Leaves are falling and he has to warn us of the ones he sees.
Grin

Now another from my old CD racks.

I find that these Brazilian artists' work are easiest for me to find and afford at www.dustygroove.com They allow you to put an item in a want list and be notified by email when and if one not in stock becomes available. (This one is listed there as out of stock at the moment).

I wasn't meaning my posting as a recommendation. I'm always hesitant to recommend things as tastes are so varied and mine some consider eccentric. I'm just chronicling some of the things I listen to. I'm certainly not interested in many items I see posted and don't expect interest in what I post from others.

I understand and I am not the type to put pressure on someone intentionally.
I will never hold anyone accountable for something chronicled or even recommended.
I consider it a privilege for us to be able to share items we enjoy.

However, it is a part of my method to investigate things with which I am unfamiliar.
One thing that falls right into that area are all the wonderful Brazilian artists you mention from time to time.
This Brazilian impact is a new place for me to look for great music.
Totally my fault for being late to the table!

I have heard of dustygroove.com, but I am not a member, yet.
Thanks for the tip!
