John Oswald/Grateful Dead "Grayfolded" disc 1 "Transitive Axis."

About a hundred versions of "Dark Star" folded together. A fascinating disc, one of two.

Nice handful of Cannonball Adderly LPs in the massive stack of stuff.
Up early again, not the dog's fault, but I've been using the SpinClean and the Vinyl Vac all morning.
I have a few ready to play.

There is one that has all German script on the label and  "Hergestellt DDR."  I can't even tell what songs are on it. Maybe Google translate can help when I come back to this one.

I do not speak German, but from my young teen days in philately, DDR meant  "Deutsche Demokratische Republik."  In other words I do recognize, that means socialist/communist East Germany, beyond the Iron Curtain.
DDR issued some amazingly beautiful and artistic stamps for the worldwide community of philatelists, after discovering that selling little pieces of pretty paper could be used as a supplemental revenue stream, with no chance they would ever have to deliver mail as a result of the new found revenue.

I'm not sure how my buddy got a hold of this piece. Shopping in West Germany, I assume.

First from this stack:
Cannonball Adderly Quintet, In Chicago, a Mercury release. This one is normal.

Another. Sounds really good.

Cannonball Adderly, Somethin' Else

Normal USA release from Blue Note and I think the stereo works well.
I have this one on CD as well and it is newish, stating "Remastered" on the front facia.

I'm not that familiar with Buarque's work and these songbooks are proof that I should work on that.

OK, I know what the DDR release is representing.
It is "Nardis,"  but the image looks nothing like any of the Riverside releases. Also it is the same music as "Portrait Of Cannonball."

The cover has the image from "Portrait .."  but it is small and no color, black and white, framed by the off white cardboard color of the slip cover.
It is the image with the fag barely hanging out of his gob.

But, the songs are the same as either of the others.

No more mystery album. Figured it was something already out there, but I did not know what it was. Basically a couple of hours wasted, but now I know.

Oh, and it sounds awesome! Totally not commie junk. This LP sounds as good as any of the other five. There are several more, but they are all the same with different packaging.

Cry

I was a little disappointed in the Cannonball stack. Out of twelve albums, only three were different, not counting the DDR variety, but it was the same music as five others.  Oh, well, fun for later I suppose.
I cannot put any of those LPs into the donate stack. No Way!

Another small stack, this time Art Pepper, but these all are different.
I think I have the earliest one cleaned up and queued up.

This is a Tampa "Deep Groove" version. I'm not sure what that means, but first skim across it, it sounds wonderful, from '58 according to Discogs.
This has the look and feel and smell of a brand new album and yet, it's sixty plus years old.

Keeping with the Art Pepper stack for now.

This is the next oldest, Contemporary Records release. Apparently a stereo reissue from '63. Borrowed Discogs pic does not show it, but mine has "Deep Groove" on the front again, just below the main Contemporary logo.
Quite a line up of greats on this one.

I know these albums are old news to many, but this is the first time I have ever held this in my hand and could just play it if I want.

Saw the date on this along with the Japanese characters and I thought it was newer, but I was wrong. This is from '57, mono.

A reissue from  '77, according to the Discogs data base. Numbers match. It is this album.

I'm sort of conflicted about Pepper. I do really like his earliest work, when he was more of a Lester Young influenced player, such as this Savoy period and earlier. I don't really enjoy his work after that. . . there are many other players I'd rather hear. Hard to explain, but that's how it is with me.

Can't wait to have another listening session tomorrow. I live for my system now more than ever. And it sounds better than ever.

I definitely like Pepper's early work. Have to slow down though. I can become burned through with an artist at times. Returning to this stack later.

Going back to CDs for a late night Magic Hour listening session.
This is one of the Romanian artists I have kind of fallen for lately.

Ahmad Jamal "The Complete Ahmad Jamal Trio Argo Sessions 1956-1962" discs V and V!

The mastering on this set excels that of any LP or cd of this material I have had before. The dynamics that Jamal plays with so skillfully are presented as accurately as the dynamics on almost any other recordings I have. Lovely sound that breathes and swings.

Bob Dylan "LIve at Budokan" Sony Blu-Spec CD2, disc 1

Thie Budokan concerts expanded is the next deluxe Dylan set to come in October so I wanted to revisit this release which is certainly far from my favorite Dylan to see if I am interested in this expensive upcming set.

Not really. I admit I like listening to this more than I have in the past because my system sounds os much better. . .but. . .what I have is enough.

Same box, but I did not expect to find these.
Nine Doris Day albums. These are all Six Eye Columbia releases, but this one is white eye.
I played this one because it is Paul Weston's big band, but I forgot how intense her meter and inflection was during this time, earning her stay as top bill for a while.

This is one point where I become conflicted. The historical value of these albums is high, but my interest in the music is low. At least it is right now.
Keep or toss?

It would be one thing if they took up a lot of space. Keeping them does not hurt me. I just don't know why I would, since I doubt I'll ever play them. That's a very strong case for placing them all into the donate pile.

Paul Weston's Hollywood Band rocks, though!

Yeah, but I feel that dumping all these "extras" into Salvation Army or Goodwill is just not good enough.
I am also teetering on the edge of blades that force me to refocus, such as Gluttony, Pride and Avarice. I'm not saying I can't do right, but the right answer has not come to me, as yet.

I have more space than I have ever had, but preventing the same as what my friend's wife has gone through (and my own mom) from happening to my beloved ones looms straight ahead.
Any of us could wink out today, but we look both ways, twice, track our health and keep optimism that it won't be today.
When my buddy left us, he still had a lot of plates spinning in his act.

Doris Day goes into the RID pile. Bless her!

This is fun, though.  Artie Shaw,  Re-creates His Great '38 Band.

Again, not exactly my standard cuppa tea, but I will listen to all seven of the Artie Shaw albums.

George Benson/McDuff, OJC cd

2 LPs reissued on this cd: "The New Boss Guitar of George Benson" and "Hot Barbeque"

Interesting that long-time Sun Ra bassist extraordinaire Ronnie Boykins is on the first album. Red Holloway is on tenor on both albums.

I've enjoyed quite a lot of George Benson!

Another small handful grab, Scott Hamilton.
This one is a nice listen.

Beautiful music. Always makes me feel nostalgic. I played this a lot, practiced to this a lot, in an important period in my life, a time when things started falling into place.

I tried to watch the late game last night, but I was dozing. Screw this! I went to my favorite quiet pillow, early.

But this morning my blood has a feeling of stillness.

I'm in the garage, working in slo-mo it seems, so this goes up in my mono stack.
Sun Ra should kindle my lazy blood.

Hey, Lon, that Pizzarelli is one of the few Brazilian artist releases that I own.
Found him on AAJ and loved the music, went to Amazon. I think I paid $5 flat and over $20 in shipping, but it came to my door, unopened and in perfect shape.

Back to the stack ...
Next big double handful is Horace Silver which will end this carton. Eighteen LPs from the '60s. Mostly Blue Note, but two odd jobs.

I am going to stop commenting upon the condition of this collection. Every album so far has been in perfect condition and even most of the sleeves are close to perfect. Maybe a tad of ringwear showing here and there from shuffling, but most are closer to minty.

This is the oldest:

Marcus Roberts "Blues for the New Millenium" Columbia cd

It now IS that new millenium. . . and I've had the blues. Managing them well though.

This is giving me memories of my 'nineties Austin life with my late first wife and our pets. For a spell there life was as good as it gets at home. I was listening to a lot of "Chicago Style" jazz at the time based on the old New Orleans jazz and blues.

Yes! This is wonderful music, all four albums I have listened to so far.

I used all the drop down menus in Discogs in an attempt to find more info, after your comment.

Nothing really helpful for identifying one of about twenty other versions.
I know how many of the "gurus" over on SH forum use the dead wax as identifiers. This one just says "moniker empty" so not that much to go on without more info.

But that is not what any of this is about. These all have value to me, yet undiscovered value in fact. So much great music!

Just keeping going here. I can't get enough. So many different artists making appearances, I won't burn through on this stack any time soon.
Six or eight big names doing cameos on almost every album? I'm here.

Thanks for the tip!
Smiley

And, I love Marcus Roberts, but I only have four of his releases, though.

I'm no expert on these early pressings either. I never had my hands on any. Price tags were prohibitive, and here in the country in Ohio there aren't any to look at, and even in Austin, "Music Capitol of the World" they claim, jazz records in general of vintage were few and far between and as a result really pricey.

But the music, however it "spins," is great stuff! Silver had this special feel to his playing, and among my favorites are the trio tracks he sneaks onto a number of the Quintet albums, they just have this special place on the albums and his playing is so . . . evocative of mood I guess I would say.

Silver music I intend to revisit soon is his first recordings with Stan Getz mostly on Roost Records. Getz pretty much heard him, hired his band and had him at the piano bench for a few years. Great support for Getz and you can feel Silver's confidence and style build and coalesce and the future appear.
