Nice one Lon, and congrats on the new Aqua II,

Been a long day and the weather here is going ´south´ strong storm tonight and tomorrow with all flights in and out of the country postponed...

Is on day´s like this with the rain beating on the windows and the traffic home from work being slow and heavy that one just needs to hear Jonny Hodges play the ´Star  crossed lovers´ From one of my favorite Duke albums with the cat next to me on the sofa and a cup of hot expresso, before the wife comes home from her work and dinner plans take over.

here´s a sound clip with some interesting out-takes

Mrs. CA and I went on a road trip to see the eclipse. I need music when I drive and here are some of the choices that helped pass the miles:

When I got home, after being away from the system for over week, I wanted something quiet to wind down:

24/96 FLAC download. It sounds like you are inside the guitar, which isn't my favorite listening perspective. But you can't argue it sounds really good for what it is.

I jusy received my little box from CDJapan this afternoon.
I'm still up listening. All but two are Wes Montgomery UHQCD, three of which I have never owned before.
Other two are Kenny Burrell, which I have not owned. A great night!

This will finish me for the evening.

Funny you should say that CAJames.

I am just listening to this one from 1974...

and was wondering why cymbals sounded about 6 feet wide on ´Oceanus´ on side one, so I looked on back cover for the engineer and even though this is from 1974 it´s the same one (Jan Erik Kongshaug) as on the Dominic Miller, the whole recording, which is good, is not what one would call realistic, it kind of hovers ethrally in the space. Seems that even though bell-bottom trousers have gone mostly out of fashion our man Jan Erik hasn´t changed his odd mixing techniques  ;D

p.s This got me curious as Jan Erik engineered around 700 albums for ECM so I started pulling out the ones that are favorites (mostly Gary Burton ones) and sure enough he´s not the engineer on any of them... Guess his "soundscaping" effects have never really been my cup of tea.

Excellent, Rap. I just got my hands on a small selection of Paul Chambers' work. Great music!

I found this browsing the Playscape site when it popped up in the new column. It's very pleasant, although a little sleepy for some. I only have the set of FLAC files for now, but I ordered the CD.
To me this is a dinner club sound, piano trio, mostly youngsters with the knack for subtlety behind a veteran piano composer.

That's what his CIA is about, Collective of Improving Artists. I often do not care for instructors, but we do need some good ones.

Nothing Bop-like going on here, but very pleasant recording for instances when you have time with a partner who does not care so much for Bop styles.
We just enjoyed this over lunch, set to match the rain outside as a background.

Paul Madsen's CIA Trio, 88 Butterfly.

Change of pace,
The wonderful Alice Sara Ott, it´s amazing she´s still playing having sadly been diagnoses with M.S at such an early age.. A wonderful collaboration between her delicate playing and Arnalds tonal wizardry. Is odd I´ve never met Arnalds as I know most musicians here in or from Iceland.. Oh well one day perhaps my brother-inlaw is on same label as him so bound to happen at some point.

Paul Desmond "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" A&M/Verve cd

This one has grown on me over the years. I hear a bit of distortion on this "Verve Original" transfer at times. I may try another pressing one of these days. Also, like many "Verve Originals" this sounds better with the Phase "Reversed" on my DAC.

Interesting about phase, Lon. Curious, though.

Since my youth I have been an absolute bully wooger or is it wooly booger (?) about phase "uniformity" from one end of the system to another. It gets involved with about two hundred things to hook together. Sanitary practice is a must.

Altering phase in one place normally, usually had to be done deliberately to correct a mismatched phasing mistake of anomalies overlooked which often caused noise from RFI or some such magnetic source.

Are you saying that your DAC sounds better (on just this recording?) with a fully reverse phased signal from the front end?

Just really confusing stuff, there.  Anything more to add?

I do not know how your DAC works, so maybe I am missing the point.

My DAC has the ability to reverse overall phase itself. In 99.9 percent of the time I don't touch that button (on the amp or remote). But there are some recordings that I don't know if it's because the "desk" or somewhere in the studio the phase is reversed, and the engineer either LIKES it that way or doesn't hear it (some of these engineers have hearing issues). In the case of a number of these Verve Original cds it seems to me that the finished product out to customers have phase overall reversed--lots of treble, bass is diminished, sound stage is all over. Reversing or inverting the phase corrects this.

Another example is the earliest of the Japanese "24 bit by RVG" Blue Note lp facsimile cds. Some of these sound better to me with the phase inverted--it's a case by case basis on the first 100 in the series. (I love these, I collect them, I think I have all but about 30 now).

I used to get behind the speakers and reverse the + and - on one end of the speaker cabling to achieve this; this DAC and a number of others have an internal wiring controlled by a switch--much nicer.

That feature comes in handy on my headphone system as well. There I have a nice Bottlehead preamp feeding my Taboo Mk IV amp; that Bottlehead preamp has its output wired in reverse phase. As I have a PS Audio DirectStream DAC there (the second one I bought that is modded with an outboard power supply and different output transformers) I can just switch it to inverted. . .and it's then really a normal output to my Taboo.

Interesting subtle stuff. I have a "Frankenstrat" that has a phase switch on it as well. . . that's a different story! Let's you get into Clapton territory in texture.

Miles Davis "Big Fun" Columbia 2-LP, Side A, "Great Expectations"

Lucy got a call that will take a spell so I'm slipping this in, my OG vinyl copy that still sounds great. I was fascinated with these 2 LPs for years after their release--grabbed this as soon as it was out. Just such a fusion of all that was going on in the music around me at the time.

OK, thanks, fellas~!

I guess I was reading too much into the situation.

I do know that recordings are not always up to snuff and some are noted, then redone.

As far as your "Frankenstrat" I get it.
There were a few companies "back when" (I will not say "back in the day." That phrase disgusts me more than I can express without a few paragraphs!)  that made conversion kits; one or two phase switches, complete with matching pick guard extensions. They had black and white - you chose one.

You had to rout out the electronics bay a bit to fit them, not much for one, but a bit more for both. The kits came with templates. The expectation was that the conversion was done by qualified guitar technicians.
But, with both or either you had a unique Strat set up.

I have installed several!  I get it.

It was not nearly as hard or involved as cutting down a B3 to make it fit into two lighter, more easily transported Anvil case types of wheeled cabinets.
I've done more than a few of those conversions, too.
Kind of sucks sometimes, being the smart guy. You might have to do some work.

Music can be fun and freaky! The show MUST go on.

This particular Strat was a luthier build that had a black limba body, a wenge neck and fingerboard, two Cool Rails and a Hot Rail, and three volume controls rather than any tone controls. And that phase switch.

The wood themselves give this one helluva sound and it's an easy player. A tone monster!

Not sure about the bridge. It's a fantastic guitar. The swamp figures in the black limba (the "swamp" part of limba/Korina) make it seem as if there are flames pouring out of the bridge. I don't really care how it looks as it sounds so good and can have so many different sounds.

I have a FrankenPrecision with the same tone woods that is a monster as well.

I love it!!
A matching "P" ... nice!

I can only imagine (not really, even) what the specialty woods bring to the game. But, I know it's great.

I had a buddy who had a grenadilla wood neck custom fit to his Strat. Another hard, dark, close grain wood that they usually use to make clarinets and wood flutes.
He had a tone of his own!
He had more in the neck than in the classic '60s Strat unit from which he began. Add his adjustable top grade Seymour Duncan humbuckers and he had a truly unique tool, no one else had.

Guitars are just as personal as the person using them, I have found.

I'm not jealous or anything, Lon, but I do see the love in what you have done seeking your own expression.
Your Stratocaster "monster" is amazing! I'm sure the Precision is just as stunning.

I have nothing to show. All of my expressions are out there being used by many people, hopefully tonight, since it's Thursday night.
You always need a good gig on Thursday to settle in for the weekend money makers. At least that's how it used to work.
Wink

Sadly it´s a Kongshaug engineered one but found way around it by not sitting in sweet spot and just letting it play, that way stereo image of base that´s panning between speakers becomes a non-issue.  :)

Jimmy McGriff "Tail Gunner" Groove Merchant/Solid Records Japan cd

Sort of funky disco in a "Stuff" (the Band) sort of way, with a big band backing. First time I'm hearing it but it's sitting well today.

I am back to sorting the stack for a while and I found a few from this guy. I grabbed the first old Mercury. I've had good luck with these recordings.
First I played is really nice. Recorded in '59.

Rap, Dexter made some great recordings in Europe before and after the return to America, and in the last five or six years a number have had official releases. I just love the "feel" to his playing and that big tenor sound.

Terry Gibbs had a long recording career. . . his Mercurys may be his best. I love vibes. . . wish I had a set (wish I had room for one!)

This was one of the "Free" Lps from that "sale" this summer. Free, with 8 dollars postage. Good price.

Yeah, was a publicity stunt, he´d been coming back and recording for years before his big "return" Been dipping into Maxine Gordons biography of Dexter...

As I take it from the book that big return was her idea...Good marketing it was too...

Something keeps drawing me back to Immanuel Wilkins and his sound and writing. His sound reminds me of both Paul Desmond and James Spaulding and his writing is within the tradition and also fresh.

Jimmy with Jimmy Ponder, Conrad Lester and Eddie Gladden.

I'm a big Jimmy Ponder fan and he makes this session for me. And the engineering! Great job by Malcolm Addey.

Enjoying some vinyl and picked this up for my daughter.  The Harry Potter Collection score by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.  The score was damn good and quality of the recording was not that bad…not too many pops and clicks.  This was a 3 disc set and all were made on white vinyl.

Reading the article above about this album which taught me a few new things, and prompted me to put it on. This is not like anything else really. A lot of history with this one, including having a work partner for a few years in the early 'eighties that was the first person I met who REALLY knew and liked this piece!

Dexter Gordon "Live at the Amsterdam Paradiso Vol.2" Solid Records Japan cd

Starts off with Monk's "Rhythm-a-ning" which I always hear starting off with the lines from the song: Put another nickel in the nickelodeon. As a kid my Dad always sang that song to us!
