Snow on the trees outside my second floor window behind the system. Beautiful and serene in that cold quiet.

This disc has won me over with its clear sound and the expressive and interactive playing. Her pianism reminds me of that of an Austin pianist/trumpeter that i got to know well, Mel Winters and his touch and ideas. He is the most mathematical pianist I've ever known, and so immediately conversant with any chord mixture available. Hers is a bit more emotionally infused, but of a similar decisive blending. And then there's Mark Turner, not on all tracks here, but always "just right."

Far more energy . . . how do the grooves hold it all!

Starting a cold rainy morning off with another Renee Rosnes, "Written in the Rocks," a very tightly arranged outing with stellar playing.



Then onward to a beautiful disc in all ways. It's too rare when the compositions and arrangements and performances are of such high order and woven together so intelligently with excellent engineering. This recording of strings is exceptionally rendered. I enjoy this as deeply as I learned to love two others of hers.

This is good medicine for a gray too windy and rainy day.

I played this one (arrived in the mail today) twice--it was such an energetic and bold and clear session and recording. I wanted to hear details again.

Yes, a great album. I may never have had trouble with "the middle" until I got to free jazz.* That is more often not what I want to listen to.

*I started listening to jazz about the same time as rock which may be why--about 14.

I totally got your reference, and definitely understand your jazz journey. Mine would look like that had I not been given some jazz LPs when I was about 14 and really been taken with them; it was the horn players that really got to me and following their lines helped me understand the forms and MOs of the genre.

I got bitten by jazz and eventually in the next ten years or so it completely obsessed my musical mind.

Hey, I am not dead, yet.
I took a few moments.

Thanksgiving is our big START to family month just before winter. My nephew, living in Alaska now, arrived a few days early and so we all started early. (the last time I posted anything)

He rents his farm house out, but it went vacant in August. He decided to winter here in Indiana, fix anything and get it ready to rent again in the spring. I helped a little with the family's arrival and settlement to their own home. It was pristine! The former renters left the place spic and span. Not much to do.


I also became a bit overridden by my chosen task/project and decided to focus more attention to sorting and cullling than to posting about every little cool thing I found.
I found a lot of cool things and I was spending too much time posting and playing new music rather than working through the stack!

Only way I could find to rid myself of harsh feelings of hubris, gluttony, sloth and pride was to knuckle down hard and focus on getting through this massive stack of stuff.

I do not expect that anyone else can identify with something like this, even within view of a margin of this treasure with which I have been blessed.

I felt that I should drop by and send Happy New Year wishes to all and explain my seemingly sudden absence.
I am focused upon my stack and getting extra things into hands which may appreciate all my "Culls" more than I can.


For right now, I am listening to some Yes, Fragile on my mono rig.

Yep.

I am actually surprised how warm my garage has stayed with the temperatures outside getting cold, like January does.
The physics don't sound plausible, because it is 2 degrees out there and 60 degrees inside here. I have one 1500W oil filled heater going with a fan on it, but I have not opened the big door all week.
I suppose the insulation in this structure is enough to pause my understanding of the math involved.

I think of Kenny Burrell as a jazz guitarist, but as with many jazz artists he does play a lot of blues.  I have seen a youtube video where he was speaking at an event, and my recollection was that he preferred being thought of as a musician, without the further classification as a jazz musician - perhaps the way I classified him as a jazz guitarist is exactly what he was trying to avoid!

That said, when I say "blues" I am thinking of blues that is more of either a folk music, or a popular music genre.  While lots of jazz players play blues, it always feels like they have a much different approach to it.

By the way, Midnight Blue was also my first Kenny Burrell album.
