It's a good one! My Dad loved Gershwin more than any composer I think; I was reminiscing of listening with him.

"Introducing Millie Vernon" Storyville/Muzak Japan cd

I'd never heard of Vernon, but with this band and as it's one of the superb reissues from Muzak Japan. . . I tried it out.

She reminds me of June Christy and Chris Connor. But with a different sense of swing and feel. Nice record!

Bass – Wyatt Reuther
Drums – Jo Jones
Guitar – Jimmy Raney
Piano – Dave McKenna
Trumpet – Ruby Braff
Vocals – Milli Vernon

Gary Peacock Trio "Eastward" Sony HiFiCD

Gary Peacock (bass) Masaaki Kikuchi (piano) Hiroshi Murakami (drums)

Man, he was a master player and a deep musical mind. And this is a very interesting recording. In the Keith Jarrett Trio "exploratory mode" tradition.

I haven't played this in a long time.  Not sure why it is SOOOO good!  It does tend to age you a little as some of what he mentions is no longer around but I remember (I'm old)

It was recorded over four sessions in July in the Los Angeles Record Plant studio in front of a small invited audience set up to recreate the atmosphere of a jazz club.

Today I have been stuck in a rut listening to Muddy Waters "Folk Singer" both in the house and in my shop. I think I have listened to it at least 5 times already!

What a phenomenal sounding recording. The sonics are so lifelike.
It sounds like they just set up the tape recorder and played. I can hear the chairs creaking and their feet keeping time. Pretty cool.

I imagine this is how all of those old Jazz recordings that Lon loves must sound like. These guys are just playing their guts out.

Probably some shyster Producer paid them $25 and a quart of gin for the rights for the recording. The music business is so corrupt!

Well. . . I'm not saying that Chess Records wasn't exploiting their artists to a certain extent, but by the same token Muddy came up North with nearly nothing and Chess gave him a platform and he proved to be their big cash cow and they did alright by him for the most part. . . . Sure if he were white and young and handsome he would have made more. . . but he wasn't, and in those years. . . he did better by far than many in the money department.

But yes, there are a lot of jazz recordings that sound that immediate and involving, part of why I just keep exploring that genre. And some new jazz recordings are very life-like and dynamic, it's not just old stuff that can sound great!

About ten years ago I got stuck playing that Muddy Waters disc over and over, and reached for my guitar a few times as well. Powerful stuff!
