Well the big news Thanksgiving and yesterday was we could get "feet of snow." Usually they are correct for our hilly area as we get all the "lake effect" snow predicted. But. . . so far., and we're nearly out of the "watch" period, we have gotten less than an inch, a nice sweetener for the view but no hindrance at all. Seems weird as we're so used to being slammed even when they say it may not be so bad.

Relieved! Fiona has finally gone back to sleep and I felt like listening to some Dexter Gordon. Picked this set off the shelves as I have not been listening to it much at all the last decade or so.

Dexter Gordon "The Complete Prestige Recordings" disc 2 of 11--featuring Booker Ervin on one track, James Moody on the others, Jaki Byard on one track and Barry Harris on the others.

FOLLOWED BY

Listening to Barry Harris made me think strongly of Bud, then my mind shifted to Monk and I put in the first disc of this excellent box set:

Thelonious Monk "The Columbia Years: '62-'68"

I haven't listened to Columbia Monk in a bit and this seemed a good way to start. Opening with the Newport performance with Pee Wee Russell sitting in is I think brilliant sequencing.

Emily Remler "Cookin' at the Queens: Live in Las Vegas 1984 & 1988" disc 1 of 2

Remler in quartet performances with pianist Cocho Arbe, bassist Carson Smith, and drummer Tom Montgomery (May 28th, 1984) and trio performances with bassist Carson Smith and drummer John Pisci (September 19th, 1988).

My late first wife and I stayed at the Four Queens around 1995 or so. Although I've visited the new portions of Las Vegas, the old city area was favored.

Nice sound on this first disc.

About four years ago accompanying my wife to one of her favorite antique/junk shops one of the owners told me he sometimes gets in jazz records as my wife told him I was into jazz. So four years later he calls me up and says he got about 50 jazz records in. I went to take a look.

A lot of the "jazz" was Boots Randolph type stuff, and big band legacy dance records, but I did find 8 that I picked up 3 for 10 dollars. Since I could get 1 more to make 9 I picked up a Barbra Streisand that my wife wanted because it had a cute photo of Barbra as a kid on the cover.

This was about 3 weeks ago. In that time I have been looking on and off for the SpinClean fluid that I had in the kitchen before our remodel, and never have found where my wife stashed it when we cleared out the old kitchen. So I finally caved and ordered a new bottle (which was part of amazon's Black Friday sale!)

They all needed cleaning BIG TIME but cleaned up pretty well. The first I'm playing is one of four that the guy said "no one will want because they probably have nothing to play them on" as he thought they were 78s. What they were though were 10" LPs, 33 1/3 rpm.

"Duke's Mixture" Columbia 10" LP. I've known of this, heard all the music, but never saw one in the flesh. It's actually in really good condition cover and disc.

The Joymakers "Down Where the Bluebonnets Grow" cd

Wow. These Texans nail the authentic acoustic recording era jazz music feel and swing and play so very well. The engineering too brings an authentic full-bodied sound with no deficiency.

I met multi-instrumentalist Colin Hancock who I think is the heart and soul of this band if not the leader. . . an amazing musician.

Wow.

Timeless, important and involving music in one of my favorite issues. A few other listeners say this set is "harsh" and "bloated" in comparison to others, so every day I am thankful for my flexible and adjustable system, espeically the P15 and Decware ZROCK2 components, as I don't hear that.
