That was an amazing outfit at that time, even though Miles was in severe pain and not his best, the group was exploring and deconstructing standards and producing exciting performances. I bought the first 2 LP set released in '79 and have the US and both Japanese cd sets.

That's wild! I really like what Hancock said about the recording being "raw." I always felt it was much more like listening to a jam session than a polished performance. And how confident do you have to be to do that when your boss is the biggest name in the business?

Those young guys were breathing new life into Miles' musical thinking, and getting his name out there again, things important to Miles--I think they were confident because he fostered this type of thinking and playing.

It was a special time in jazz. I really like Miles' music from the introduction of this quintet with George Coleman and Sam Rivers and then finally Wayne Shorter--a strong beginning, and a fascinating evolution.

I managed to sneak in another listening session yesterday but without my laptop handy so I didn't chronicle it. I listened to the other two discs in the SFJazz Collective Horace Silver set, and one disc of MIles Davis' "Directions" Sony Blu-Spec CD2 2 cd set.

Starting off this morning with this interesting 7th release from Jorge Ben (in 1970) "Brut Forca" on a Philips cd reissue.

It's a very cold morning with a bit of snow deposited over night. Looking forward to breakfast with Lucy's sister and brother-in-law, Briget and Dan.

Reaching back to the earliest cd version I have retained of "Miles in Berlin"--the SBM Master Sound lp facsimile version, which is sounding mighty good this morning.

This was the earliest concert of the Quintet with Wayne Shorter released before this year's box set of recordings in '63 and '64 in France. And it has long been a favorite since the LP version was first released way back when.

In a Silent Way is so different from Plugged Nickel it is hard to believe they were recorded just a few years apart and with some of the same players. Genius is an overused word but I don't think anyone would quibble with Miles Davis being one.

Erroll Garner "Nightconcert" Mack Avenue Records cd

I think of the two dozen or more Garner cds I have I would keep this one if I could only have one. It's just so HIM. Sometimes I hear five or more pianists in Garner while he is still wholly himself. I hear Hines. Waller. Monk. Even aspects of Jarrett before there was Jarrett. Amazing concert, so fortunate it was captured.

Since it was still in the transport, and I love it so, I’m re-listening to this one as my first disc of the day.

Such magnificent playing full of confidence and the joy of music-making. Such a personal touch and flow. . .I especially love how the introductions morph into the “tune.” Great recording as well.

My second time listening to this one. I wish the sound were better, it's okay. .

Quite a performance. My interest in this sort of jazz has waned over the years. . . I used to much more excited by Tolliver's conception and execution before. But I'm glad this has been released. My esteem for John Hicks has grown over the years so I am quite happy he is in the piano chair.

Wayne Shorter "Night Dreamer" Blue Note 85th Anniversary SHM-SACD

After losing power to half of the house for some inexplicable reason things are back to normal now--Lucy and I tried everything we could for an hour or more and then the power company came, the tech touched the meter, and power came back. Going to have an electrician take a loot soon. . . but glad to have heat and water for the night.

Before that three boxes from cdjapan arrived and this is the first disc I'm playing. Sound is very similar to the UHQCD released of this title in the series, a bit mellower sounding . . . in my system SACD has a slight edge, always it seems. . . both discs sound very very good in comparison to other cd reissues of this title from the past.

About an inch of snow on the ground, cold, still morning. The snow plow coming through woke Lucinda up. . . but she is lying down again and I am listening to disc I of a box set that arrived too late last night to listen to.

I have long loved this material, there is very little that is new here for me BUT I had to have it and the sound is marvelous! The original recordings of this material are stellar (one microphone so well balanced!) and the playing has that relaxed and groovy swing that just is so satisfying.

Grant Green "Feelin' the Spirit" Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary SHM-SACD

Wow. This one really shines in the SHM-SACD version. The detail on Billy Higgin's drums draws one in. . .the clave and rim shot strokes so delicately presented, the dynamics from gentle to harder strikes so clear. And Hancock's piano (one of my favorite of his performances ever) is placed just right in the center and so well captured. Just a delight to listen to.
