"Basie Big Band" Pablo Japan cd

This was still in the transport and I'm spinning it again.

I saw the Basie Orchestra about this time in Chicago in a Catholic Church near the University of Chicago which I was attending. I had wanted to go to the concert with the woman who seventeen years later became my first wife, but someone else had asked her first. I remember loving the show. . . and also watching her as much as I could out with the other guy. I was always drawn to her like a magnet. I think that emotional activity causes me to really remember the band's performance.

This disc has real dynamics. A great recording.

I don't remember when these Charles Lloyd Quartets were recorded, I think late 20th century. But they are certainly more "modern" than the jazz to which I usually listen. The music itself is pretty old school while the recordings are excellent digital, and the download was immanently economical so the best of all the worlds.

I go hot and cold with Lloyd, like his earlier work better than these ECM titles. I do like his most recent release on Blue Note though, that one is better recorded imo--I'm not a huge fan of the "ECM sound."

Starting off a rainy morning with Branford Marsalis Qartet’s new one on Blue Note, “Belonging”–the Quartet re-interprests the Jarrett album with pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner.

Very nice. Hope the rain goes away. . .we’re supposed to go to Chagrin Falls for a “Hands Off” event this afternoon with a few neighbors.

I haven't played this one in a while, and as a new RSD release (I go for the cd that comes out usually a week afterwards) is due, it seemed a good pick to start this cold morning (snow on the ground again!)

I see a Bill Evans recording and get a sense I know it. . . and each time I do listen I find surprises, big and little, in the performance, arrangement, sound. . . a great thing.

Especially it seems lately as the system shines so brightly.

This is what I am living for these days. These hours of excellent escape in the sonic world. Music! Equipment! Thank goodness my hearing has held up.
