This one is sort of unique in that he never quite did one like this one before or after.

He is the leader/catalyst of a number of other bands, the most famous of which is Porcupine Tree. I do like their albums from Signify and beyond, before that they were too "Pink Floyd Trippy" for me (I'm really not a Pink Floyd fan, or was one in the 'seventies but the music hasn't remained a favorite of mine.)

Porcupine Tree have two excellent DVD and Blu-ray concert films I recommend:

This led to a joint album with Mikael Akefeldt the leader of Opeth that is a very interesting album, sort of ambient and moody rock:

I really like Opeth! I'll have to pick up those albums if I don't have them already!

I just ordered Insurgent and the Raven Blu-Ray off Amazon. Thanks for the leads! I love finding great music from others recommendations. It's like discovering new worlds. :o

I watched a couple Porcupine Tree videos on you tube...I totally see the Pink Floyd vibe...great sound, but not my thing as well. Somewhat in that vein, I lean more towards the Portishead or Sneakerpimps "Becoming X" sound.

Thanks Lon for the other recommendations. I picked up an EP from Porcupine Tree called Waiting. I found it in the record bin as an import from the UK. I don't see it on Amazon or I would post a picture of it ... they do have the songs as a download, just not the album.

It has Waiting Phase 1, Waiting Phase 2, Colour Flow In Mind and Fuse The Sky. It is excellent and almost seems like it could fit in as tracks from Insurgentes.

I would also like to suggest Tame Impala as newer band coming out that has a lot of the Steven Wilson vibe. The album I picked up is called Lonerism and they have a song getting a lot of airplay here in San Diego called Elephant. The first thing you will notice when you listen the these guys is that the lead singer sounds so much like John Lennon that the song Elephant has you thinking it was a lost track off of the Magical Mystery Tour album Cool

If you've never seen or heard of the movie before, go take the time to buy, borrow, rent a copy. It's a very enjoyable "sleeper" that I've been helping build up to "cult" status.

Some of these are too loud and even distorted, but others in the set are excellent. I've never heard this one sound this good before (and I have the vinyl bought when the lp was first released).

I got this one in the mail just before I left on a business trip (to Peoria!). I only got a few minutes with it but I liked what I heard! It's going to need a proper sit-down listen after midnight sometime soon. Thanks for the recommendation Lon! I got that other CD of Steve Wilson - Insurgentes. It didn't catch my attention as much as this Blu-Ray did - but to be fair I was soldering new silver ICs for myself and maybe a few to sell, so I was focused on my work. I'll give it a proper listen later.

What's really got my attention this week (should have posted it earlier) is ALT-J - An Awesome Wave. Unfortunately, I heard the single hit the local Alternative station...which to me means they aren't cool anymore. ;D

I do wish he'd write some different sort of tales in his lyrics though, he's continually a Debbie Downer.

I have not played my favorite for awhile. I have him on right now. The incomparable Mr. Sonny Stitt ....meets the Oscar Peterson Trio. He just blows my mind every time...goes right to my Soul...and pushes the goose bumps out without any hesitation.

Tonight I think: Stan Getz, Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderly, Lester Young, Joe Henderson, Ben Webster & Johnny Hodges get rolled out!!

I really enjoy this new reissue program of albums on the Bethlehem label. They relased about 70 in Japan and so far have released five in the US; both series sound the same to me and that is really GOOD. I have some of these titles on either a US or Japanese release from the past, these new ones sound better.

You must have an amazing collection of media, Lon. Someday I'll have to go through this thread from the beginning and see if I can learn about some "new" stuff. Having been away from "listening" for 12+ years, my CD collection starts in the late '80s and drops dead around 2001. I never really got much out of my comfort zone compared to the stuff I see posted in this thread. I'm going to change that now that I've got a better setup at home.

Yes, I've been collecting a long time, without stop, and I have wide musical interests from classical to reggae (but to be honest 70% of it is probably jazz!) I love music. That's why I love my Decware and PS Audio and Rega components--they let me just enjoy the music no matter how it sounds!

It's an amazing time to be a music lover!

And it's Beethoven. I grew up with my Dad telling me he thought Beethoven was the pinnacle of music. It gets harder and harder for me to argue with him.
