Lon,  you must not have seen my earlier question.  Is this recording on the  Columbia Miles Mono box you bought?  I've found my 1988 CD reissue on Fontana by Polygram Jazz...I don't remember listening to it previously but will later tonight.  I'm going to go into my Listening Cave soon. I'll be checking out the results of the RCA cleartop 12AU7 I put into the ZP3 this morning.  Also put in some NOS RCA 5Y3GT's in the Torii.  What rectifiers do you run in your Torii...I do recall it's RCA's in the CSP and ZP3. Mark.

You're talking about "Lift to the Scaffold" right? In the mono box set the "Jazz Track" lp is there in its mono version (I think it only ever came out in mono). On side one is the Paris material, side two has material from the Miles Davis Sextet of '58. I'm not sure how much material is on the cd you have. I have a later Fontana cd that has 76 minutes of material: all that is on the Jazz Track lp (which has added reverb) and then the rest is the unedited tracks (without reverb). This Blu-ray audio has the same material on the cd I have, but in 24/96 PCM.

Oh, and I use RCA rectifiers all around, I just find I like them best. In the Torii I am using some early 'fifties 5U4G coke bottle-type.

Lon, why the 5U4G's rather than the 5Y3 type you've got everywhere else?  What are the sonic differences between the two types.  I bought the RCA 5Y3GT's because I saw an auction on Ebay and needed something NOS since one of the Union National 5U4G's I had in my Torii was only intermittently working despite the "wiggle"...same when I put it in the CSP3 and Taboo Amp.

My 1988 Redbook CD of "Ascenseur pour Lechafaud" is the same material as yours...26 tracks, same cover also.  I think the Jazz Tracks album has the ten tracks that were released in 1958...tracks 17 through 26 on our CDs.  Mark.

I've tried 5Y3GT in the Torii, and just prefer the 5U4G. Not sure what the sonic differences are now, it's been so long since I did a comparison. I just preferred the 5U4G. The opposite is true in my CSP2, two CSP2+s and ZP3. Just how it is!

My cd is different than yours, different mastering and sequencing; my cd (and this Blu-ray) have the ten tracks that were on Jazz Track first.

Lon, we're both a bit OCD about this stuff.  I had gone to discogs and looked up Jazz Track.  About our CD's, I see you are correct...wanna trade...hehe.  Mark.

PS... I just pulled my copies of "58 Sessions" released on CD in 1991 with all seven tracks by the "Kind of Blue" sextet including Bill Evans and the "Live at Newport 1958 & 1963" released on CD in 1994...it has to have been at least 15 years since I last listened to them.  As I read the info I realized all of this material, including the soundtrack, is from 1958...the year I was born.

This LP now.  With the RCA 12AU7 Cleartops in the ZP3, the sound seems a little too bright. Or are the RCA 5Y3GT's I put into the Torii contributing?  I have to stop changing more than one tube at a time!  Mids and Low end are nice though and lots of detail.  I have three other types of 12AU7s on the way.  None expensive like the NOS Amprex from Holland or Mullards.  I figure I'll wait to see how I like what choices I've got once the HR-1's are in place.  I know the Zu Audio "Souls" are very different than the HR-1's.  Mark.

Yes, amazing music from that year!

Have you ever discovered recordings made the day you were born? I found that Hank Jones did a great trio session for Savoy that day (with Wendell Marshall and the drummer that inspired my own drumming, Kenny Clarke), and Chico Hamilton recorded live for Pacific Jazz that day. Neat stuff to listen to and realize I had just arrived!

The Cleartops could be the culprit, now. . . give them some time. You're going to love the HR=1s. My pair is now in the "finishing" stage.

I'm liking the recent choices posted by all.  I was getting worried  about where we were going when someone posted some Kenny G...hehe.

Anyway, I'm back in my Listening Cave after a dreadful time getting to work this morning.  I had to leave my car idling for an hour (5am to 6am) in front of my house to loosen up the 3/4 inch of ice on it.  Only one door would open, for which I'm thankful. But now I'm nice and cozy with my tube warmth while the heavy ice is cracking tree branches and colliding cars outside...here in Big D...Dallas, of course.

I'm listening to the below set...it's fantastic.  I don't know if it's the recording or maybe the used old Seimens EL34s that I popped in the Torri this morning, replacing the new stock KT-66's, but the "too bright" sound I complained of yesterday or the day before has left.  All is sweet and a bit warm...mmmm.  Mark.

Lon, I did a google search for Jazz recordings on my birthday and found that three tunes on the Miles Davis /Gil Evans LP, "Porgy and Bess" were done on my birthday. The album was recorded on 4 different sessions. Milestones was also recorded in 1958 and Kind of Blue the following year.

I was in a Monk Mood and I only can find this one on vinyl, there are other Columbia reissues on vinyl that I can't find.  Of course, I have almost all his official releases on CD.  Anyway, this one is worth another listen.

The sound I'm getting today is amazing.  I think I'll stop tinkering for a while.  But another 12AU7 came in the mail today...a Raytheon with halo getter like the 12AX7's you and I both have in our ZP3's.  It'll have to wait until tomorrow.  Mark.

Wow Mark, tunes from Porgy and Bess! That's very cool. 1958 is a very interesting year in jazz, lots of recordings I love recorded that year. Sort of like the year 1969 in rock, amazing the music recorded that year and what a turning point in some fields of rock and the careers of some artists.

This LP is another from my youth...released in 1971, the cover always intrigued me...Billy Preston had the same thing going on back then.  The music is interesting too. Her version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is beautiful.  Much different than Simon and Garfunkel's.

I couldn't resist, I took out the RCA Clear Top 12AU7 and put the Raytheon in the ZP3...I'm not sure I can tell much difference but I think the Clear Top is the winner.  I'll give the raytheon some more time.  I think the biggest difference is from the EL34's vs the KT66's. The bass is a little flabby so I pushed the Bass controls on the Torii MK IV forward...much better. Mark.

This is the first time I've listened to this LP despite having purchased it in 1998.  It might surprise some but i don't like everything Keith Jarrett records.  This may be one I don't care for...so far the first song is far too "Free" for me.  We'll see what follows.  Mark.

PS...well Jarrett after the first song got to something I liked.  Here's the third tune. This is obviously going to be a mixed bag for me...

This will be the last LP tonight.  This LP was recorded a little more than a year before Jean Luc Ponty's first Atlantic Records release in 1975..."Upon The Wings Of Music"...both albums share the tune "Bowing Bowing".  All songs were written by Ponty and so it is more fusion than straight jazz. It should be no surprise that I like it but not as much as the Atlantic albums I've previously mentioned.  Mark.

Digger, I looked for the group's music and found several full albums on you tube and Ten on Spotify.  The group is not Rare Earth...just "Earth".  I can't say I particularly liked the few samples I listened to but everyone's tastes are different.  Vive la différence!  Mark.

PS...here's the wiki page, another link and several you tube links to get you started....

Thanks, I see what your talking about thanks for sorting it out for me wasn't sure if it was rare earth or just earth. It would take the right situation for me to sit and listen to it maybe? Definitely well done though.

For any of us old time rockers I came across a band called Royal Southern Brotherhood brings back fond memories!

One song I really like isn't on this album One Way Out. I thought this was a newer band doing a copy I think sounds good. Haven't taken the time to research this band. My age isn't necessarily progressing me in this direction but this is pretty good.

Yeah, Mark Found it. I have three of their albums now, the one I posted above I like because it's a slow, heavy, instrumental. The second one I got is full of loud screaming which is a big turn-off for me, the third is like the Honey one posted above, but with some cello mixed in, and I'm liking it even more.

Digger, glad to help. I'll listen to your link latter.  I've moved to the Listening Cave and only vinyl is allowed...at least for another month.

This LP next...I have all of Miles' 50's stuff...in fact multiple copies...but only on CD. I have a few of his Columbia reissues with his  first great quintet but can only find this one. I wanted to see how it sounds with all the new tubes and equipment.  Well, it's very nice indeed.  I'm really liking the EL34's and RCA Clear Top 12AU7 together.  Has anyone tried the 6L6 with their Torri...or anything besides the KT66 or EL34? I'd be interested in your opinions.  PM me if you want to respond off line.  Mark.

PS...how do I get the little PM box at the bottom of my posts?

Earth is interesting. I like the two that LR likes the best myself.

Here's a wikipedia entry for Earth; I learned from it!

This LP next...it has Charlie Haden in Mingus' seat. It even has Jimmy Knepper on it, Lon.  It's got all the Spirit and Swing of Mingus.  Mark.

Came across this when  I was sorting the lp`s alphabetically again. A relic from the 90`s attempt at keeping up   Smiley A spell of ambience  and dance, though it was all drift music to me. The label though, ffrr full frequency recording range. Sure enough its a sonic delight. (the other side has the paradise guitar mix) Seems they were on to good formula.

I've honestly never heard this whole album - I grabbed the HDTracks version since it's one of their top selling, if not *the* top selling recording.

At first I didn't get it, but the deeper I go into the album the more I like it. I have a feeling this will really come alive with the ZMA. The Zen amp has the speed, but not the weight this recording needs.

LR, Moondance is one of my favorites.  Once you "get it" you'll need to go listen to  all his early releases...he's not bad even now.  Mark.

This LP now...

I just turned on my CD player to warm up the tubes for my next selection.  Mark.
