Going for some guitar music - a new CD I just has imported - though I'm having trouble ripping it to my library, I think it might have a pressing error.

I got the new Mobile Fidelity SACD of that this year, wow, Caravan Serai, a great album. I once met Hadley Caliman, the sax player on that, a really nice jazz gentleman.

Marky,
No Digger mansion here!   Smiley. No need for one. The Gilmour album was good. I do believe I like the 1978 Gilmour Album just a bit better though it may have been his first. This new one is David Gilmour About Face is from an 1984 cut. I may need to spin it a few more times who knows I may end up liking it better. Some music takes a few times through to grow on you. Mumford and Sons was one that took a while but now I really do like it. There new album hasn't grown on me yet. Funny how that works. Hope you get some sleep!

Smiley

I think this maybe one of their best efforts!

Still in an SACD mood. . . relistened to part of the Rollins again (Jim Hall's guitar sounds so damned good!) and then popped in this.

I remember being fascinated by the woman on the cover and sort of mesmerized by her beauty when I was much much younger and had this lp in hand. When the internet arrived I was able to find out that she is Sally Grossman, wife of Albert Grossman, Dylan's then manager (the man without whom he probably wouldn't be the star he is). Albert is a lucky guy. Or let me rephrase that, in actuality Albert made his luck. A very aggressive, canny operator.

Just got home and read what others have been listening to.  Marky, Love, Love, Love Freddie King...Great!  Lon, "The Bridge" is sooo fine...I'm going to have to listen to it again tomorrow morning.  The Beethoven String Quartets Box I ordered Wednesday morning was in the mail Box when I checked it on my way in tonight.  You guys talking about David Gilmour...I saw the below LP at Half Price Books and Records for $10 it was in good condition.  Wasn't sure why 10 when everything else I bought was $6 each...even the double LP. Is there something special about this LP?  I've never heard it.  Mark.

PS...found this LP and three others on Spotify...will listen to it tomorrow.

That seems to be a popular album. . .the first of his as a solo artist I think? Maybe should have been a bit cheaper, Half Price Books can be a little schizo in their pricings at times.

Right now: revisiting a blast from the past for me. Love Curtis, and forget how powerfully fine his music is at times.

Here in Dallas on PBS,  they Just finished the Hendrix Doc and are now running Stevie Ray Vaughn with Albert King.  Another of my three favorite Kings....BB, Freddie and Albert.  It's 1 1/2 hours long.  I really need to get some sleep...I'll watch for a half hour.  Mark.

I won't get into the Listening Cave until later but I was looking around for some of the Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughn program I saw 40 minutes of last night and thought I'd share my findings.  First, the CD I have that I think was released in 1999 is on Spotify (see below photo). Next, many of the songs are on you tube but best of all the whole thing including footage not on the PBS program is on you tube....link below. A newer DVD/CD package is available on amazon.  It's all good. Mark.

Albert makes me smile though I dont have any material....left hooker with strings upside down.
My next splurge on records is writing itself.
Lon I was trying to remember the Miles `witches brew` from listens in the `70`s and the `live` cover is it.

Right, the official title is "Live/Evil". . . part live, part studio, part studio masquerading as live and stuck in front of live track. Really fascinating double album I've been listening to since it was first released on LP. My friends were listening to Genesis (I have always HATED Genesis) and all kinds of other stuff I never could get into, they thought I was insane to listen to this electric Miles, but I still listen to it to this day with a passion.

The order of the releases that are most historically sigificant to me (and that I LOVE) is: In A Silend Way, Filles de Kilamanjaro, Bitches Brew, then Jack Johnson, then Live at the Fillmore, then Live/Evil, then Get Up With It. Th

Staying warm, and kind of lazy today. I should be working in the garage getting the workshop put back together, but I'm just so not motivated. Was up late last night (obviously).

This morning, I think I found the first DSD album I'm going to download.

I like what I'm hearing so far. (hope the link works)

I'm in the listening Cave once again.  This session will only be a couple hours then I have to go. I'm listening to the same Beethoven String Quartet (C sharp minor op. 131) I recently heard the Cleveland Quartet perform on  LP, only now with the Vegh Quartet on CD.  I read the reviews on Amazon.  One was especially negative from a fellow who has listened to 17 different versions.  Well to my non-expert, layman's ears this is very pleasant including the recordings sound quality...no complaints here. Mark.

Glad you are enjoying it Mark, I would have felt funny if you hated it. I'm a layman too, and I like these versions. I particularly like what they do to the later quartets, though I don't get to play those as often as my Dad doesn't dig them. Early and middle, yes. Late, no. Too abstract perhaps for him, and more technical, less lyrical.

Mark,

The link in my post was to the full length samples.

It caught my attention, and is supposed to be recorded with some new Mic developed by the Kimber Cable guy.

I'm still waiting on my Beethoven set to show up. I'm looking forward to giving it a try with the Zen.

Lon, I think I'm going to stick with this Vegh box for the full two hours I have to listen.  It's rare that I'm in the mood for classical and even rarer lately that I play CDs rather than LPs. That Bernstein recording...does he have a box set out of Beethoven  piano sonatas?  As you can tell from all the piano trio jazz I listen to...I love the piano.  The LP of Beethoven's #13 and #15 piano sonatas I recently listened to and posted was great.  I've already forgotten the players name.  Mark.

It's Rubinstein, Arthur Rubenstien. I think there's a box set of the sonattas, but I have his complete work for Columbia and RCA in a huge box set.

My favorite of the piano sonattas so far is Freidlich Gulda.

This box set has all the sonattas and the piano concertos. Great sound.

Thanks again Lon, that may be my next CD purchase of Classical music....a bargain at about 3 bucks per CD with free shipping...the way I like it.  But first i want to make it through the Vegh box and listen to some more samples of the piano sonatas online.  I don't want to get back in the habit of just buying...hoarding...and never getting around to listening to what I purchased.  Lord knows I probably have thousands of LPs and CDs I've never opened let alone listened to but my goal is to have listened to everything I have and hopefully get rid of those not worth a second listen.  I really need to thin the herd.  Mark.

PS...I just spent a while pulling LPs to listen to later.  Way too many to bring into the Listening Cave.  Lots of Beethoven Piano sonatas and Concertos, Symphonies, etc.  Lots of Mozart.  And I seem to remember really liking Sibelius so I pulled lots of his stuff.  I have so much classical, I could spend years just listening to them.  I also found two sealed Black Lion Label Earl Hines LPs...sweet! Lots of other goodies and there are still many boxes somewhere to be found and opened...a tough job but someone has to do it...hehe.

I won't get to the Listening Cave until later this afternoon but i thought I'd give you a little early Christmas Cheer.  I was actually looking for something the DSO performed yesterday in their Christmas program. I couldn't find it but this is excellent. I love this Mel Torme song. This group was part of one of the Christmas programs I saw at the Meyerson Symphony Hall a few years ago.  You see the hall with it's huge Pipe Organ briefly in the video and the photo I've included.

Lon,  I've got a brief question. What 12Au7 tube are you using in your ZP3?  And which input/signal tubes are you using in your Torii's?  I'm assuming you have stuck with the EL34's and not gone to the KT66's...correct?  Mark.

My folks and I love this music. And it's a very well selected compilation, and the masatering is imo better than on the complete set, either in earlier three cd or later four cd versions.

Lon, as you know I love that music.  Only recently did I take out the two Ella/Gershwin CDs from the 4 CD remaster...from my car.  Only so I could listen to it with the Decware system.  Soon I'll put some back in. For now the car is loaded with Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Keith Jarrett and Chet Baker. Mark.

Lon,  I like bobby H. quite a bit.  I have the small 3 CD mosaic box and keep hoping they'd do the big box treatment to his earlier Blue Note output.

I think you missed my earlier post and question for you.  It was a few minutes before your Ella post so you probably just didn't see it.  Go take a look if for nothing else...to see the Meyerson Symphony Hall photo.

First LP today is what I had begun a couple days ago and was still on the TT...beautiful indeed.  That Bill Evans CD you listened to earlier made me turn my head and look at the Box on my shelf...I haven't listened to that set in a long, long time.  Mark.

Mark, sorry, missed those questions.

I'm using a Raytheon that shipped with the amp from Steve. I went through a whole box full of 12AU7s I'd collected through the years for use in my EICO, ZBox and DEC685 and there were a lot of possibilities. I really didn't like this Raytheon when I first used it and the ZP3 was new. I had some good hours with an old Mullard that came out of my EICO HF81 and a Telefunken. I was using Raytheons in the 12AX7 positions (bought from Mike [tgarden] when I bought the ZP3) and when the ZP3 was finally broken in I popped that Raytheon from Steve back in, let it cook a while, and it's stayed in ever since. The three Raytheons give the ZP3 a very clear and powerful character.

In the Torii Mk III I've tried all kinds of input tubes and just don't think the 6922/6DJ8 etc. family works for me. I've stuck with a number of 6N1P over the years and like this one best, and have been using them a few years in my Toriis and my CSP2+ preamps.

http://www.cryoset.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_24&products_id=263&osCs...

I'm using JJ 6CA7 tubes as the power tubes. Others have had reliability problems with them, I haven't. I love the sound. I haven't tried the KT66, maybe one day, I still have another set of the cryo'd JJs on the shelf to use this upcoming year. I use early 'fifties coke bottle shapped 5U4G rectifiers, early fifties coke bottle shaped RCA OB3s and RCA OA2 tubes in the other sockets.

Thanks Lon, I have one of those Raytheon 12AU7's with Halo getter labeled "Baldwin".  I really didn't give it a fair trial, only a few hours because I liked the RCA long Black plate better.  I'll give it a better trial sometime.  Today I have 4 more 12AU7's arriving in the mail. I have the same Raytheon/baldwin 12AX7's from the same source...I like them but want to try some Sylvania Black Plate 5751's in that spot sometime.

I'm listening to a CBS Masterworks Portrait LP...beethoven piano sonata #29 and Bagatelles, op. 119  played by rudolf serkin.  I can't find a photo of it though.  I think it is a 60's recording reissued in 1983.  I like it.  Mark.

You're doing far more tube-rolling than I. I find a tube that works really well with a broad range of material. . . I hang with it and sit back and enjoy.

:)

Lon, in that 12AU7 spot I will have rolled a lot but in other positions in the other Amps I haven't.  Once I made one change to a NOS tube it stayed.  But I do still need to get some  RCA 5U4G's in the Torii and RCA 5Y3G's in the Taboo and CSP-3, maybe try something NOS in the input spot in the Taboo and CSP-3.  Once I get the HR-1's, I'll quickly settle on a tube complement and just sit back and listen.  I think you can tell that I, like you,  put the Music above the gear in importance.  To me getting the gear right is a chore...the Listening the reward.  Mark.

The second LP of this set now...
