Yes, I don't know why they bother. I love Commodore material. I have all of it that I transferred to CDR from a friend's Mosaic lps sets. And I have quite a bit on two lp reissues from when Atlantic owned Commodore, the Atlantic reissues I think sound better than the Columbia, etc. reissues on lp.

Right now, Haydn symphonies. Oops, though Dad requested them, they put both he and Mom to sleep on the couch.

I'm half way through this LP.  The photo is of a stereo copy mine is mono from 1963.  It's in great shape and sounds great.  When I bought the Mosaic  14 Various single LPs, I was the only bidder ($100 plus 17.5 shipping), the seller had 21+ LPs (several are box sets counted as one LP in the auction) and the single Mosaic #119 The Pete Johnson/Earl Hines/Teddy Bunn Blue Note Sessions up for auction with starting bids of $25 and $12 respectively...I hadn't even seen them.  He emailed me and asked if I'd be interested in them for $25 and no additional shipping.....Hell, yes was my answer.  Then he sent me another email asking if I wanted an opened but mint/unplayed copy of Bill Evans Complete Recordings on Riverside box on CD for $45.  I quickly tried to locate mine and could only find the box with one of three jewel cases in it, so I bought that too.  With each side I spin the happier I am with my purchase.  Mark.

Listening to the Steve Wilson remastered Thick as a Brick in FLAC.

Holy Crap this remix brought this album to life! It's a bit dry though, reminds me of when I replaced the factory input tube on my Zen Amp with a 6922. But still, the stereo separation and individual instruments really pop in this remaster!

That Thick as a Brick remix is pretty good. . . I know the original so well that the remix is sortof odd to me. Same with Benefit and Aqualung, albums I've known even longer. . . . Wilson does good work, but if you first encountered the albums when first released, it's hard to accept these remixes as "better." If you're a bit younger (and Wilson himself is) I can see being bowled over by it.

Same with his new Close to the Edge remix. . .he does a great job. But my favorite on the Blu-ray is the straight hi res transfer of the original mix. Beautiful!

Well that Befheart sounds great on the Decwares. Original pressing on Buddah and one of those albums thats remained very clean. Spin cleaned all the records now just got to get a big bottle of fluid so I can put aside records, new and old, into a pile and spin them when needed. I read an article that claims most surface noise comes from the paper sleeve dropping minute debris on the records and you should pop the records into the anti-static inner sleeves.

Back in the Listening Cave.  First I finished up the Andre Previn LP started yesterday and now this sealed LP purchased 25 years ago.  Just into the first cut a few minutes but this 1988 reissue is great.  Of course, it's Sonny Rollins.  Mark.

This next LP is the original Mono version from 1964 of live recordings from Storyville in Boston late in Billie Holiday's life, she died the summer of 1959.  The recording quality isn't the greatest but Billie is wonderful and we get to hear her talk to the audience. There is a 1990 Fresh Sound CD reissue of this with extra tracks.  Mark.

PS...I tried to find the version of "I Love You Porgy" from this LP but it's not on you tube.  But this wonderful 1948 version was.  This is from Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" where Bess is asking Porgy, a crippled older man who begs for a living...to not let "Crown", her prior man on the run after he murdered a man, take her.  I think Billie does it best and can see her as the thirty something year old prostitute professing her love to Porgy.

Lon, on those Billie Holiday LPs...in my buy I got both Volume 1 and 2 of "The Golden Years", I think each is 3 LPs.  I hope all the LPs are in as good shape as the one spinning. (The boxes are falling apart)  I have some of this material on the late 80's LP reissues, and you are right...the quality of the sound on this 1966 LP is  far superior...much quieter.  Mark.

This next LP is in horrible shape...it wasn't even listed in those I bought...it was a freebie.  I'm only playing side one because side two is even worse.  I'll see how a good cleaning can improve this...but I'm not expecting miracles. That being said, the music on this 1968 stereo LP is great and I can even tell the recording was done well.  Although these are tracks with ABC with strings, orchestra, etc.  My favorites are the more R&B/Soul Atlantic recordings.  Mark.

Yes, when Miles "retired" in '76 or so Columbia put out several two lp collections of odds and ends and this was one of them.

Some great stuff that was just sitting in the can.

I couldn't believe these when they came out, they had stuff from the 'fifties through the 'seventies. . . from about '72 on I was addicted to Miles' music and when it stopped it was great to have these released. Another fine one was "Directions," and then there was 'Plugged Nickel" and "Round the World."

Mark, if it was a Roulette lp . . .it was probably Don Goldie doing his Louis Armstrong impersonation. He was VERY good at recreating Louis. I've been fooled before by his imitation.

Lon, I just looked up the credits/discography for the Roulette JT Box and you are absolutely right...Don Goldie is the only other vocalist.  Jack fooled me when he called him Pops...or at least I thought he did....great stuff.

A lot of those guys called each other Pops, it's a thing they did, it's respect.

My best male friend in the world is a trumpeter in Austin, Dave Laczko. We call each other Pops. It's fun!

Dave is part of a duo that sometimes expands to trio and quartet and beyond, called WD-41.

Next, LP #6 of this Mosaic Set...The Complete Capitol Fifties Jack Teagarden Sessions (# 168) I've noticed some variability in the thickness/heaviness of the Mosaic LPs.  The Herbie Nichols' LP was thinner and a bit warped but playable, this one is heavier, 180gm?, and very flat. I would have thought Mosaic would have used at least 180gm Vinyl for their Limited Edition and very expensive sets.  Mark.

Mark, When Mosaic started out hardly anyoone was doing 180 gram for lp releases, but it was starting out in the audiophile world. Nichols is one of the earliest sets and on standard vinyl. A bit later Mosaic moved to what they called "QLPs" which were the 180 gram variety. So early Mosaic sets on lp weren't 180 gram, somewhere after the frist 25 sets or so they switched (and upped the price).

Thanks, Pops...

PS...Lon, I went to Mosaic's website to investigate further. The first 42 sets 101 to 142) were the non-180 gm Vinyl and and are listed as MR on the LPs. Starting with set 143, Charles Mingus' 1959 CBS Recordings, they are referred to as MQ on the record. In the listings they were referred to as below...But there were still a couple sets not made with the 180gm Q Vinyl after #142 and at some point they made most sets with only CD versions.
#142 The Complete CBS Studio Recordings of Woody Shaw (3 CDs or 4 LPs)
#143 The Complete 1959 CBS Charles Mingus Sessions (4 Q-LPs)

PSS...on looking further at the OOP section, there are a lot not designated with the Q-LP label...I hope they just didn't list it correctly.  For example, Bill Evans' Complete 1980  10 LP at the Village Vanguard Box only has the LP not the Q-LP designation...that would be a shame if true. Mark.

Marky, not yet.  Is he trying to be like Monk with the funny hat?  I'll listen a little later.  Mark.

Cool. I had the MIngus LP set but someone wanted it so badly I sold it to them when I wasn't running a turntable.

I don't remember if the Evans wer QLPs or not. I know the Miles sets all were and I wish I had them.

Marky, I used to listen to QMS way back when, and even when I briefly lived in SF. But haven't in a long time and don't think I have any of their material.

Greg Porter? I heard a bit of his debut and wasn't knocked out.

Lon, the only reason I have some Mosaic LP sets is because that was all that was available at the time...either at Mosaic new or in a used record store...I think I only have a few.  The rest are CD. On the Miles Mosaics...when those came out we should have jumped on them but I was mainly listening to CDs and I already had all the Miles Boxes in CD. Now I'm more interested in Vinyl purchases but will buy both.  Mark.

I don't know when this LP was issued or when the recordings were made...they sound live.  Art Tatum died in 1956 so they are old....but great despite poor sound quality.  Mark.

I had all the Miles on cd as well, and let the boxes go by unbought. NOW I wish I had them. They are ridiculously expensive though!

I do have a few Mosaic LP sets bought recently, the McLean and the Chaloff. . .perhaps a few others. Always great sounding records.

Nothing spinning right now. Just got my parents back from a birthday dinner for my Mom, who is 82 tomorrow, we went to a local Italian restaurant and my two brothers and their wives and my youngest brother's 5 and 6 year old were there, a good time. My Mom grumbled that she didn't want to go as we left the house but was very happy once we got there. When I finally get back to my own home I'll probably pop in one or two more of the Bethlehem cds form Japan I bought from dustygroove.com

I got round to talking to the man who was testing my mums ears for her new aids. I wont have to keep shouting anymore. I told him I could do with the soundproofing in his booth. He said yes but it wouldn`t be good on the eyes. Anyway he`d been to see G Porter at the Albert Hall, very impressed. He was getting excited about a new set of Miles monos ? He`ll be checking the site for audio gear for the future. Hope he doesn`t read this. I`ll know in couple of weeks when my mum gets the new h aids fitted.
