Won't get to the Listening Cave until later but  I saw the touring production of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" last night.  It had the same general story as the 1954 film but parts of the story were changed and more songs were added...of course a few big dance numbers were added.  I listened to several versions of this first song but none could top the clip from the movie with Bing and Rose Mary.   I threw in another from the film...what the hell, it's Christmas.  Mark.

Lon, have you bought or listened to the complete sets Columbia records has put out?  I'm specifically considering the Monk, Duke Ellington, Mingus...maybe others.  Also getting closer to ordering the Miles Mono set.  I'm looking at the french amazon...is that the preferred one? The Dylan Mono isn't available in CD there...the LP is 220 EUR...too much.  I'll look else where.

I know the mono sound good.  I'm just wondering if the Columbia sets do as well.  Mark.

I have those sets, the Monk, Mingus, Duke. They are all Mark Wilder masterings and all sound very good  (and consistent from album to album which is nice).

amazon.fr or amazon.de are both good to do business with.

Well Lon, I made my first foreign CD order at the German Amazon.  It took a while because the pages didn't always translate to English which was a bit of a chore when I had to check out.  I bought the Miles Mono, Columbia complete boxes of Sarah Vaughn, Monk, Duke Ellington, Mingus and "Divine: The Jazz Albums 1954-1958"  4 CDs full of Sarah Vaughn's Emarcy Jazz output. No free shipping but it was only 9 euros S&H and a total of $228.46 USD.  It would have cost  $324.21 via the US amazon with free shipping and tax included.  A nice savings of 95.75 or a more than 29% discount.  Worth the hassle...I guess.

Now, I'm going to go warm up the Tubes and get down to spinning.  Mark.

Yes Mark, worth the hassle. I have all those sets except the Sarah Vaughn Columbia set (I'm not sure I want the stuff from her last stay with the label. .. maybe later). You will like them all!

Right now, from the new Japanese Bethlehem reissue series on Solid.

I have had this earlier on a domestic cd with a different cover, with a rocket launching on it.

Lon, I haven't listened to it in many years but the Mosaic Box of The Jazz Messengers with Wayne Shorter in the band were great.  I think I have Hard Drive too.  The Columbia Sarah Vaughn wasn't very expensive, I thought I'd give it a shot. The Emarcy Box was more expensive but includes some great Music...much I already have. Here's the review on All Music guide.  Mark.

"Possessing one of the finest singing voices of the 20th century, Sarah Vaughan was already an established solo star when she signed with Mercury Records in 1954, and between then and 1958, she recorded pop material on the label's main imprint and jazz material on the subsidiary EmArcy Records, although there was some overlap between the two. This lovingly conceived box set collects all of the jazz sessions Vaughan did under the Mercury umbrella during this stay (she returned to the label for a second run between 1963 and 1967) spread over four discs, including Images, originally released as a 10" and then reissued as a full LP with the addition of five more cuts as Swingin' Easy, the self-titled Sarah Vaughan (with Clifford Brown, Herbie Mann, and Paul Quinichette), In the Land of Hi-Fi (with Cannonball Adderley), a live set, Sarah Vaughan & Her Trio at Mister Kelly's (with a dozen tracks added that had previously only been available on a Japanese import), After Hours at the London House (with Count Basie's horn section), and No Count Sarah (which featured Count Basie's full band but not Basie himself, thus the title). It all adds up to an impressive four years for Vaughan, and with the pop stuff mostly filtered out, this collection allows the focus to fall squarely on her buoyant phrasing as she defines and enriches a classic set of jazz standards. Few ever did it better."

All these Ry Cooder lps are out in a box set for very little money now, I have it but haven't heard any of the discs from the box set yet. Word is that the mastering is great however.

I finished the Art Tatum LP I started yesterday and am replaying the Chet Baker Quartet, Pacific Jazz LP I spun a couple days ago. This one is on deck...it is a two LP set called "Stormy Blues" released in 1977 of some Billie Holliday Verve recordings from 1954 and 1955.  I've had three of Billie's Verve albums in my car I think they were recorded in 1957 and 1958.  I have really enjoyed them...I can't decide what I like better, the young or old Lady Day.  Luckily I don't have to chose.  Mark.

Billie is still on deck but I put LP #5 of this set on first... #174 The Complete Atlantic Recordings of Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh (6 CDs or 10 Q-LPs) I was looking through the Mosaic LPs I bought to see how many were 180gm.  I have already had two non-180gm LPs that are pretty warped but playable.  Some of the white plain jackets they came in show some water damage...I don't think they were stored well. This one is 180gms and flat. This is not my favorite.  I also have the  CD box that I haven't listen to.  I bought it because I like Konitz and Marsh. This LP so far is just Lennie Tristano playing solo.  Mark.

I finally got around to Billie's LP...Damn this is good!  Ironically, I bought the Complete Verve Billie Holiday CD Box when it first came out and proceeded to never listen to it....what an idiot! some samples...

Lon, I'm looking at the Mosaic website and have some questions for you.  They have some  4 LP sets...Getz, Monk, Clifford Brown & Max Roach...all are $25 per Q-LP (180gm).  Seems like a fair price for Limited edition, quality pressings.  Do you have these?  What do they sound like.  Also i am considering several other CD Boxes...I'd Like your opinion on the Music and Sound Quality, since I assume you bought them...see list below.  If you want to email me that'd be fine.  Mark (jazzgas@aol.com)

Mark,

I don't have those lp sets from Mosaic. I have all the material on cd and just don't see the need to spend so much for the vinyl equivalent. I'm sure they sound great.

I have all those cd sets. A few of them I haven't heard yet more than once, my listening time has been so challenged thi syear and I have not stopped buying things. The music is all worthwhile. The sound is good for the time periods. Buy wtih confidence.

Thanks Lon, I think I may try one of the LP sets when I make my next buy...maybe the Clifford Brown since it's limited to 2500 copies.

I'm in the listening cave for a few hours and have selected LP #3 of this set...#152 The Complete CBS Recording of Eddie Condon and His All Stars (5 CDs or 7 Q-LPs)

I love Herbie Nichols, and it's too bad he didn't get to record more often and died so young. He did a handful of sides for Savoy, was the pianist in a more trad jazz session for Atlantic, and did one excellent album for Bethlehem, and that was it. He even left a lot of unrecorded compositions, most of which have come to light in the 'nineties and afterwards; this box set was a catalyste for contemporary recordings of his work.

Max Roach plays brilliantly on this set!

Right now, the radio over here at my parents' because Mom wanted to hear Xmasy music. Sigh. I'm not a fan.

Lon, too bad you couldn't play spotify at your parents...then you could choose the Christmas albums.  Ella had an excellent one...Ray Charles...Sinatra, etc, etc.

I have to admit that despite buying the three CD set of Herbie Nichols when Blue Note put it out... I don't recall listening to it.  I definitely like his Music and playing...kinda Monk-ish but different.  Anyone that gets Monk should like this.  Herbie actually may be a little easier for listeners to digest.  He's not trying to hit two keys at once or prone to dissonance at times as Monk could be.

Tell me about that Commodore 23 LP set...Vol. one.  I think I may pick it up sometime.  Mark.

Next is this LP of...Johnny Sparrow, whom I've never heard of.  This is an import from England.  A 1988 reissue of early 50's Studio recordings in NY, NY or Philadelphia.  The remastering is done by John R.T. Davies, a name I recognize but can't remember from where.  The sound is great though so he must know what he's doing.  Mark.

PS...I almost forgot.  My  Balanced Silver Widow cable from Toxic Cables came in the mail today after 4 months of waiting...good things come to those who wait.  I'll fire up the Taboo MK III tomorrow and hook these babies up to my Audeze LCD 2.2 headphones.  We'll see what all the fuss is about.

I agree, anyone that likes Monk would be inclined to like Nichols. He was more conventional in some ways than Monk, but also more adventurous in other ways, especially rhytmically.

The Commodore label was an excellent one run by Milt Gabler who later moved to Decca and made their best jazz recordings. It's mostly trad jazz:  Condonites, NYC trad jazz guys, some New Orleans cats.  Great sound quality for these sessions!

As for Xmas music. . .I just don't like it. I grew up as a minister's son and the whole Xmas season was Xmas music of one sort or another and events of hymns and carols and. . .I heard enough by the time I was an adult I needed no more the rest of my life! The only one that I play these days is "Christmas in the Heart" by Bob Dylan. It's irrevernt, it's old-timey, it's touched with brilliance. . . because Bob did it. I couldn't believe he did one, and it's a doozy.

Mark, John R. T. Davies was one of the past century's best musician/collector/engineer. He manually "noise reduced" tape hiss in part by selecting the perfect needle for a 78 from his collection, he always pitch-corrected the tracks (a big problem with 78s), and he had many rare dics in his own collection which he used or loaned/leased to record labels.

Until his death his was THE name to look for on discs reissuing pre-tape material. His work for JSP, Retrieval, and many others (especially Jazz Oracle, I have every one he remastered for that excellent label) is very listenable and always the best sound available.

In June next year, Lyric Stage will put on a Production of the Musical "Mame" with full orchestra.  I'm not sure why I have told you all this except as introduction to the below wonderful Christmas song that I heard during one of the Christmas Concerts this year....it's from the Musical "Mame".  I couldn't decide which version to give you so you have several to chose from.  Here's wishing all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Mark.

Good Morning Lon,  If you or anyone else is interested, the Dallas Wind Symphony's  Christmas program I saw earlier this month is being broadcast over WRR Classical 101.1 FM here in Dallas at 10am cst, 11am est...here's the link. http://www.wrr101.com/listen/  Just click the Blue start button and you're in business.

I am trying out the new Silver Widow Cable from Frank at Toxic Cables.  The Audeze LCD 2.2 headphones with this cable seem to be a little brighter...not a bad thing since with the standard cable they are quite Dark/Warm. There also seems to be more detail and punchier Bass.  This of course is my first impression with the below LP after one song and I'm sure things will change a bit with Burn In.  I'm not sure if the Burn In is of our equipment/cables or of our Brains/ears...none the less, I am now convinced that it is a real phenomena.  Mark.
