Lon, I like Kirk although sometimes I find him too "far out" for me. I'm considering this Mosaic 4 LP set of Limelight/Verve recordings that include these albums...“Slightly Latin”, “Now Please Don’t Cry, Beautiful Edith", “Spirits” and “Rip, Rig And Panic”...what's your opinion of these.

I've already decided to get the Clifford Brown/Max Roach set and the Monk "Live at the It Club" set.

I'm listening to the below LP and previously listened to the other...

I love Kirk, and I like things further out than you do, but man what a genius talent.

Those are good lps in that Mosaic set. The one that is most far out imo is the flute one, "Spirits"--and it's one of my favorites of his. It's not far far out, just a bit off center. But so full of . . . spirit.

The Japanese have just over the past year and in the next few months released all the Atlantic sides in their budget line. I'm going to get them, I just love those albums.

The one I found has Kirk from '63 and '67. I haven't watched any of the DVDs in the 3 sets. I don't even own a DVD player. I could watch them on my laptop, I guess. Mark.

Spirits is an amazing release! I need to pull my copy out soon, I have it in the Complete box and I also have the Verve remaster.

Yesterday I listened to part of the "RVG" CTI cd of Stone Flower from Japan. I have four different digital versions of this release, and all are worth listening.to. I think I prefer the new CTI Supreme version from Japan by a hair.

This CD next. Another Buddy De Franco recording on Verve with Sonny Clark at the piano...

PS...I guess this was recorded for Norgran records originally but didn't Verve buy them? Not sure.

PSS..thanks Lon. My only problem with these CDs, I now have three, isn't the music or how expensive they are but how brief they are, usually less than 30 minutes...this one is 22 minutes. You could get three or four albums on one CD. Looking at it that way, maybe the Mosaic Box would be a bargain.

Now that I have silent background again, I can listen to music with more dynamic range (e.g. near silent passages as well as loud passages). Grabbed this one listed as Abstract, Experimental. Has some excellent analog keyboard with analog FX - really lush and dreary at the same time. Good stuff if your in the mood for it.

I need more Pepper to feed my Soul. Next, CD #1 of this 9 CD OOP box... "Art Pepper The Complete Village Vanguard Sessions". This was recorded early in Art's comeback period...July 1977. I don't recall where but I read about how Art had worked himself to exhaustion prior to this session with Drugs...cocaine, he had stopped using Heroin by then...and with his insecurity and fear. He literally had collapsed and had to be awakened and helped to the Club. This Pepper is more Raw...more frenetic...more Coltrane-like than his later work would be. Mark.
