I wanted to compare this version of forest flower in 1966 to that I just listened to from 1969...both live.  Mark.

Well,  this evening I listened to some vinyl after about a month.  The repaired Torii is back in service and the glorious sound is back.  I started with the two LPs below.  The first is the Record Day Mono 180gm version of KOB I bought from Mike B. here.  Very nice,  I'll be buying a few more.  Mark.

Early recordings. Sound isn't as vivid as it could be later, but man the performances!

Now listening to Villa Lobos String Quartets. And everything the last few days have been going with these new rectifiers for the Torii. Sound really nice.

Today I'm going to spin vinyl for quite a while.  First, this morning I listened to a CD each of recordings originally from various labels in the mid to late 40's by Mel Torme and Sarah Vaughn on the Proper Label.

Now I'm listening to the rest of Keith Jarrett Standards, Vol. 1 that I hadn't finished previously,  then this will be next...I saw Dave Mason in concert in the late 70's so when I saw this LP at HPB&Rs, I couldn't resist buying it.  Mark.

Ok,  when I was about to put on the Dave Mason LP,  another HPB&R purchase called to me...so first this RTF LP.  This brings back memories of College's sometimes mind altering experiences.

Lon,  I'm intrigued by those Rectifiers...tell me more.  I looked at the Torii MK IV manual and Steve doesn't mention 5V4's as an option.  I'm very touchy about not experimenting too much with new tubes since blowing up my Torii and enduring it's painful 1 month absence for repair...Not to mention the expense..Jeez. I'm going to do some reading on your new tubes.  What do they sound like compared to your NOS RCA 5U4G's?  Mark.

PS...my HR-1's didn't quite make it Friday so they'll come on Monday.

Hi Mark,

The 5V4 are a safe tube to use in the amps, sort of falling in between the 5Y3 type and the 5U4. . . I used to use one in my Select years ago and it was the best rectifier I ever had for that amp. In comparison to the older RCA 5U4G bottle types I've been using they are just a bit more "romantic"--a bit less open in the midrange, a bit more of the upper bass range I think. Very similar, just perhaps a bit beefier, a bit more "old school" sounding. Works very very well with the Tunsol KT-66 I'm running.

Man, having to wait til Monday for the HR-1s. . . . Ah, the anticipation keeps building!

Lon,  when you say "Romantic", you mean Darker/Warmer with a greater emphasis on Bass rather than treble...correct?  The only tube change I want to do soon is put the Raytheon 12AX7's back in the ZP3 to see what the Triple Mica GE 5751's are actually doing.  I think they're more detailed with more high end extension...the Bass and Mids are nice and clean too.  It's just been so long since I've spun vinyl that I can't really remember exactly what the Raytheons sounded like.

Next, an album I know no one here has heard.  I picked up several North Texas State University Lab Band recordings from an ebay seller last month.   Now the school is called University of North Texas...same great Jazz/Music programs though.  Mark.

Yes, a thicker sound overall, a bit more bass, darker mids. Closer to a vintage tube amp sound than the 5U4 bottle types.

This next LP is a limited edition 10" 140 gm record store day item.  It was quite an indulgence for me,  20 bucks for two songs recorded live in 1965.  The opaque orange vinyl looks rather startling as it spins on my all Black Rega RP6...the tunes are far out too.

Lon,  talk me off the ledge, after seeing the last post about the Torii MK IV for sale,  I seriously was thinking of buying it until I went back and saw mine similar except for the mono switch, was purchased for $3075 with warranty.  I actually have been thinking about a used Torii MK III to see what the controls you rave about are like...different than the MK IV.  A more substantial treble cut than the MK IV.  Plus I would never be without a Torii when I have to send one in for repair. Mark.

Mark, you know best. It IS great to have a back up amp, no doubt about that. And Iove the versatility of the controls I have on my Mk III. Can't go wrong either way.

Another HPB&R's purchase from a while back.  I'm sure I already have this but when I found a nice clean copy, I thought it would be easier to buy another than find mine in the black hole that is my house.  Nice 1975 Mangione, not exactly what I listen to now but it sure brings back memories...sounds great.  Mark.

Lon,  for now I'll be content with the Taboo MK III as back up until a great deal on a used Torii comes along.  The original Torii that went for $600 was tempting a while back.  When the HR-1's arrive, I'll use the Zu Audio Souls with the Taboo in the Den.  I've also put in an offer for another pair of speakers...I'll tell you more when I hear back...I don't want to invite competition from others here that would love the speakers I'm trying to get.  Three pair of efficient speakers should be enough to play with.

Next LP will be more Charles Lloyd.  There is a Blue Note LP with the same group from the eighties I'd like to get.  This one is very, very good. Mark.

Mark, cool, you do have the Taboo the fall back on and I'm sure it's no slouch.

Another pair of speakers? What. . .you trying to be Stone of Tone or somethin'? Smiley

Have you considered a great digital source instead of another pair of speakers? My system went to a whole new height when I finally landed the PS Audio PerfectWave DAC. It was the final indredient. No other source I had or had heard was anything like it.

I won't spend more than about $1500 for another set of speakers.  I've been curious how these sound ever since I started down the Tube Audio path.  It was a toss up between the Zu speakers and these.  I got the Zu's in an ebay auction for a good price.

In regards to a new CDP/DAC...I'm pretty happy with the two Jolida 100's I've got and would have to compare side by side before I replaced them.  When I could get your set up for 4k new, I thought about it but ultimately decided against it.  Maybe in the future.

Once the speakers I want are sold...to me or someone else, I'll tell you more and post pictures. Mark.

Mark,

I agree with what Lon is saying regarding source.  I just recently did a comparison of a few front ends I own (Oppo/NAD/PS Audio) with the ZMA.  I did a similar comparison a couple years ago, along with the Decware Zen CD player, with the SuperZen. The PS Audio front end is significantly better than anything I have heard in my system.  Among other things, the PS Audio system excels at air and space.  It’s hard to describe, but once you hear it (compared to other sources), it’s hard to go back.   Everything else sounds dry and a lot less involving.  It really does bring you closer to the performance.  You are there.  It’s very noticeable on such highly resolving equipment.  And it makes Redboook sound excellent.

I have not heard the Jolida.  I have read good things, but if  the Jolida sounds anything like the Decware CD player, there is no contest vs. the PSA.  They really are in a different league.  I returned the Zen cd player and never looked back (part of me was hoping the Decware player was a giant killer and I could return the PSA system, but it wasn’t).

Good luck with the speaker purchase.   I am looking forward to your feedback on the HR-1's.  I am also looking forward to hearing the HR-1’s at Decware in June.

Lon,

There is something really special about the Cowboy Junkies “Whites Off…” disc.  For me, this is the perfect intersection of music and sound.  Raw beauty...again, hard to describe.

Hope you both are doing well.

Cheers,

David

Dave,  as you should know,  I am a huge Art Pepper fan,  I've got the complete box of the concerts your CD comes from.  Art was more raw and edgy in these gigs.  He'd worked himself up to a frenzy with cocaine and sleep deprivation prior to these dates.  I prefer his playing a little later when he settled in and was a little smoother, what I call "Sweet and Sour" playing.

In regards to sources...I hear both you and Lon and may look into getting PS Audio stuff later...maybe after the dust settles on the new DAC.  If you and Lon hear of a great sale,  let me know.

Lon, Dave,  I woke up today and found that the ebay seller accepted my offer of $1250 plus shipping for a pair of four month old Omega Super Alnico 7 XRS speakers.  I'll post the link with pics, below.  I normally would have bid more than $200 below his ask price but there was already a pending offer.  Many Decware owners have Omega speakers and are very happy with them.  I've read their impressions/reviews here and on other sites...I don't remember any being negative. It's ironic that almost eight months after ordering the HR-1's, I'll soon have two sets of speakers to break in and enjoy.  Mark.

Mark.  Congrats on the Omega speakers.  I have not heard any of the Omegas, but a lot of folks love them. Looking forward to your thoughts/ feedback.

Are you currently using Zu's?.  Since Axpona I have been looking into the Zu Druids, so I might pick your brain a little if you have experience with Decware/Zu.

I will be demoing the HR-1's at the mothership in June.  Really looking forward to hearing Decware's flagship.  Eight months is a long time to wait for a product, but I'm sure it will be well worth the wait.

And, it will be fun for you to compare the HR-1's and Omegas.  I sometimes forget how much I really enjoy the comparison/journey element of this hobby.  I finally got around to setting up an XLR cable demo with The Cable Co.  I need to hear for myself if the balanced connections on the ZMA really are magical.

I will keep my eye out for deals on the PSA system.  I picked mine up during the 4K deal.  I think you could get a good deal on the mkii DAC right now (<= $1800) because of the DirectStream launch.  The trick will be getting the Transport for the same price.  My computer sounds great feeding the DAC, but at the moment I prefer the convenience of the Transport because I don't yet have a music server setup how I want it.

Dave,  originally I was considering both Omega and Zu speakers in the $1500 range when I ordered the Taboo MK III Amp last summer...seems like an eternity ago.  Back then Zu had a bunch of ebay auctions for speakers with minor cosmetic flaws...I won one for a pair of "Unions" that I had some problems with...long story short...they were replaced with a new pair of Zu Audio "Souls".  At first I really didn't like them with my Taboo...too little bass and thin sounding but after a few adjustments, a wicked long break in and pairing them with the Torii MK IV with some tube rolling and a CSP3 and now I would never consider getting rid of them. There are many here that have Zu speakers farther up the food chain that are very happy with them...do a search of the site or better a google search of all sites.  My guess is that after adequate break in the Druids would be great.

When I have all three sets of speakers broken in, I'll post some impressions and comparisons.  I don't have the "Audio" vocabulary that many here do and sometimes have trouble describing what I'm hearing but I'll do my best.  I'm really just a music lover who has to deal with the hardware grudgingly to get good sound.  I'll never be one to try to scale that final 5% though.  Mark.

PS...Dave,  I should add that like Lon, I will never be a down loader of music...I've gotten off the format cycle with Red Book and Vinyl and I'm very happy.  Like Lon, I have many thousands of recordings in these formats and would never consider transfering them to computer files.  In the distant past I've bought products with transfer to another medium in mind and, for the most part, it was money wasted... Reel to Reel, Cassette Recording deck, CD recorder.  Believe me, after decades of these products sitting unused,  I know I'll never move past where I am now in terms of Digital Music.  I do enjoy streaming spotify through my Taboo and Audeze Cans though.  Mark.

Well, congrats. It's great that you got these at a great price. It will be interesting to hear your impressions between these and the HR-1s. Ever since I heard Decware's "Radial" line of speakers I've been unable to really bond with any other speaker, but then I know I'm different. Smiley

Right now
Never heard any of this before and I really like it. Nice sound too, very airy and yet full.

I was spinning some tape tonight, just trying out some "new" parts and adjustments on my Reel to Reel, but spinning bits now.

Bought this from Blue Coast today - they have a 50% rebate going on.

Lon, the "LIVING STEREO COLLECTION VOL. 2"...a 60 CD set just popped up so to speak on one of POP Markets daily deals for $85.  Do you have this set?  It's being released in the US tomorrow.  I'm sure you have some of this on single CD releases or in other Box sets...ie.  Arthur Rubinstein.  What do you think?  Mark.
