These days, I never seem to tire of spinning vinyl, even though my vinyl rig is no where near "state of the art."  Simple ancient Thorens or a primitive Dual. Of course my cartridges are worth more than half the rest of my system. I also use these fancy cartridges to transfer and convert to digital at the highest resolution my software can muster  (196/48), these albums I have acquired.

Here is one other. I love this one ...

Often the file size is over a GB or two for one song.

... but it sounds so close to analog!

Great news for Dylan fans! In November the next "Bootleg Series," Vol. 11 will be either a 2 cd or a 6 cd Deluxe version of "The Basement Tapes." Awesome! I pre-ordered the Deluxe.

I picked this first LP up at HPB&R this afternoon, an original very clean copy.  Then Blue Train is next in line. I wanted to listen to it again before I buy the Music Matters 180 gm reissue this weekend.  Mark.

I bought this MFSL reissue Fourth of July weekend and am just opening it...very nice.  All the MFSL 180 gm reissues of Miles' early Columbia recordings have been excellent.  The Sony/Legacy Mono 180 gm reissues are also great and cheaper. But the MFSL's are warmer and more satisfying. Mark.

PS...I misspoke...this is the Legacy Mono edition...there is no MFSL version.  What I said above applies to "Milestones" and "Round about Midnight".  I also prefer the MFSL of "Sketches of Spain" to a 70's Columbia reissue I have.

I listened to some Live Art Pepper at Ronnie Scott's earlier today but wanted to tell you all about my ebay score this morning.  The Raytheon Long Black Plate 12AX7, often branded for Baldwin, are the best bargain for excellent sounding NOS 12AX7 tubes.  I have them in both Jolida CD Players and periodically they go in my ZP3.  Several Decware Members also use these in their ZP3. I roll different tubes in the ZP3 about every month and these are in my top three favorites but the others cost more than double what you can pay for these.

Today I  bought three more high testing pairs so I have doubled my stock.  Ebay listing and test results below.  Oh...I paid 78 bucks shipped. Mark.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321498655563

Hi Mark. These were tested on an EICO 628 tester. Minimum is 42, good is 56 and top of the scale is 100. The test results on these are: Pair 1 - 91/91 & 91/91, Pair 2 - 92/91 & 92/92, Pair 3 - 91/91 & 92/91. They are identical tubes probably out of a 100-lot box. I believe they are testing in the NOS range. I have tested many 12ax7's and these are some of the highest testing ones I've seen. Special deal: Buy all three pairs and I will include 1 additional identical tube which tests a little lower at 90/88.

So tell me Nick,  are the 45 rpms that much better?  I have yet to buy any but have ordered the Complete Riverside Albums of Bill Evans on 45 RPM Vinyl from Analogue Productions.  I've been very happy with the audiophile 33 rpm vinyl from Music Matters,  Analogue Productions, MFSL as well as most of the reissue 180 gm LPs of the Classic Rock and Jazz LPs from Columbia, Warner Brothers, Reprise, etc.  I guess I'm just easy to please.

I use a Rega RP6 TT with an Exact Cart and ZP3 with Jupiter caps...to a CSP3 with Jupiter caps to a Torii MK IV driving a pair of HR-1's...so I guess my equipment should be good enough to appreciate the improvement.  I'm just not too wild about getting up every 10-15 minutes to turn the LP.  And then there's the added cost.  Mark.

They really do sound quite nice, mark58. The Bill Evans~ How My Heart... is breathtaking through my modest system. As far as being better than the single LP Music Matters reissues,  maybe but not by enough for me to demand that I will only purchase 45 RPM in the future. I do think they are a bit better compared to MFSL pressings that I have.

Gotta agree that many reissues from the long- standing labels are great and at a fair pricepoint usually but there always seems to be a crummy pressing or poor mastering job sneeking in that has be crying that I'm only going to buy Japanese, Music Matters, AP, etc in the future. Great to have this problem, huh? Been having good luck with the Heavenly Sweetness label as of late, too.

I am going to try and grab a few of the Music Matters 180g 33RPM reissues- the Blue Train is great.  It's like Cutris Fuller is right there, standing in my basement. 'Course the Bill Evan's 45 sounds awefully sweet.....

So, in short, I have no clue. I would have said the 45 rpm or Japanese pressings were the way to go but it looks like Music Matters and Analoque Productions are trying to give us more options.

Oh, Mark did you win the Bill Evans box set ? WTG if you did. I got the timing wrong but they still topped out just over my budget when factoring in postage. Hey, I just scored the 9 record Bill Evans job lot on e-bay. I dont think I`ve got 9 albums by anyone `cept Floyd and Hendrix .

Marky,  the Evans Box I ordered wasn't the 18 LP red box.  I did bid on one but lost.  I ordered the Analogue Productions box in May...it's been on back order.  Below is the link.  I think you could even get a 10% discount this weekend.  Mark.
