Syd,  I'm looking for a Mullard 12AX7 for my ZP3 since you like it so much with your Russian Power Tubes.  I think you said yours was a 1966.  What is the code on it?  Is it I63 B6XX?  XXs are month and week codes...I think.  Also, those don't have seams on the top...right?  At some point Mullards were made by Amperex so there would be an Asterisk or delta or other factory code.  B means Blackburn Factory in UK, 6 I think means 1966.  Mark.

You`ve probably got a 12ax7 in the stash that will do the same Mark.
It`s a `65 Yellow print halo 163 B5E2

Played some of this to see how the snappy drum machine and bass sounded. These tubes are v/quick/responsive. They`re taking 1/2 - 1hr to come to full volume. I am so impressed with the detail, I could write lots but you`ll see. One tit-bit, a jazz album yesterday...the drummer must have been swishing his brush on top of a cymbal. They were playing and a lovely metalic background was there all the time. Never noticed it before. 30 hrs

Syd,  the only British tubes I have is a pair of Mullard CV-4003/12AU7s.  All my 12AX7 types are American Black Plates or Phillips/Amperex.  I've got my eye on one 1966 Mullard 12AX7...this might be a way to get a taste without breaking the bank, since we can mix  the 12AX7 spots.

My Russian Power Quads shipped yesterday so they should be here by Saturday the 21st, if all goes smoothly.  Mark.

Oh yes, I wouldn`t have paid thoes big prices. The MC class Mullards, sq plates, goal posts. There is a seller I look at and thats all he sells, vintage, red print Brimars ...
Ah, here he is
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1957-MULLARD-ECC83-12AX7-mC1-LONG-PLATE-SQUARE-GETTER-...

Back to the new power tubes. If that was it and no more burning in I`d be very happy. I can sense theres still the atmospherics waiting to bust out. Had some allready.

I havent got many 12ax7`s Mark, around 5. Ok I took the unbranded 12ax7 out of No2 slot and put a `60`s tung-sol in. The unbrandeds are good but neutral maybe cool. I`m straining to hear any change but thats wrong, I`ll let the tung-sol settle in and get the oveall picture.
Still got the trusty x3 mica Sylvs to play with. Time to enjoy my mate John side 2 now playing.

They really are fine tubes.   Smiley

Syd,  The 1966 Mullard 12AX7 I was going to bid on...I had my bid loaded and had 10 minutes or so before I wanted to enter it.  I fell asleep...ARGH!  I woke up about a minute past the end and the price hadn't budged...who knows what I could have gotten it for...I was prepared to pay $13 more than the last price. Oh well, there will be another bargain soon.

But once I woke up I bid on 5 LPs, VG+ to NM condition, from an ebay seller...won them all...see below.  Mark.

CARMEN McRAE "BY SPECIAL REQUEST" U.K. BRUNSWICK 1956 LP

STAN GETZ "In Stockholm" Verve Mono LP

Nice albums Mark, I could do with some more female jazz singers of that ilk, sort of albums I could open all the doors up in the daytime and listen to while doing chores. Loads of old Mullards come up at decent prices. That page I highlighted for the `57 went for £86.75, pretty good really. He`ll have another up soon.
The  6P3S-E`s have been on a 5 hr cd loop and in 15min I`ll be listening again.
Ps My cd is much louder than the vinyl rig and the new tubes have impressed on the digital front.
Think I`ll play this first with the ZP3

phew..that was high octane

Because of some room treatment I used to blame the bass player for any booms, he`s hitting the strings too hard, and you`d probably hear booms in a club with stand up bass. I`m not saying the 6P3S-E`s have worked a miracle, but bass booms are becoming notes. Does that mean the old EL34`s were to blame. I`m not going to dwell. Each album has a new interest.

Hard to believe but I haven't been in the Listening Cave since last Thursday.  Anyway, I removed the 15 ohm and put in the 10 ohm resistors in the HR-1s.  I also removed the Amperex 7308 and put in a Bugle Boy 6DJ8 in the input of the CSP3...sounds good so far with this LP.  Mark.

Bob Dylan "Slow Train Coming" SACD
superb. I absolutely love Blood on the tracks/Desire/Hard Rain/Street Legal/Live @ Budokan/Slow Train Coming/Infidels

I know there are Saved, Shot of Love between Slow Train Coming and Infidels, but they dont do the same thing to me. the other albums are like a progression and seem like they are part of the same scenario if that makes sense.

I like this one, have since it was released, but man I hate "Man Gave Names to all the Animals." Skip it every time.

I love "Shot of Love" and "Saved" too, though the production isn't as good as on "Slow Train Coming" by any means. Great songs in there though.

Right now

Played some Floyd this evening "Animals" and a side from "Tha Wall"
I think the new power tubes are shining with good clear recordings. The "Wall" was great. Now "You`re Under Arrest" Miles Davis sounds very good ( that means brilliant of course. Decware amps ! )
Scored some Shostokovich today so I`ll be getting some proper education tomorrow   Cool

Floyd on vinyl is sublime with decware gear, great match.

Syd,  I seem to recall something about a blue glow in my reading.  Time for a little Evans in the Cave.  We'll start with LP # 1 of this double LP...

The new remaster.

When my friends wanted to put in Floyd I usually tried to angle Zepp onto the turntable instead.

A dash of Pepper. This is a King Records reissue. I think this LP was recorded right before he entered San Quentin for an extended stay on drug charges.  Mark.

PS... I was curious...this is the list of Art's time in prison... sentences in 1954–56, 1960–61, 1961–64 and 1964–65; the final two sentences were served in San Quentin.

Burning Spear Marcus Garvey

What the Jamaicans were able to produce with limited resources and equipment is simply amazing. their engineers in the 70's influenced the entire music industry. Unsung heroes...

The last two Floyd albums I played, Animals and The Wall, are in not good condition and wont be played again. I dont have Dark Side anymore, Wish you Were Here is probably knackered as well. Good copy of Meddle which I couldn`t be without.
Love Zep but they are just too loud, Bonhams drums are like explosions and the air pressure in my smallish room is sensitive to  big power blasts. I can handle the odd bass heavyweight. I am tempted though, Zep are so exciting. I have couple Zep discs.
Played the Dylan Shadows in the Night this evening on cd and it sounded better. The clean digital sound gave Dylan a cutting edge that suited him. Only a few winces.
Still getting the new power tubes settled in ; moved the speakers further along the wall 12" so they are 4 1/2 ft away from me. The big void behind them is like their new playground as they like to go deep.
I`m getting a live feel to some albums.

Syd, Have you listened to PF Endless River?  Really outstanding, IMO.  I replaced my original DSOTM, WYWH and The Wall and I am very happy with the new vinyl.  I just wish they'd get on the ball and reissue Animals!  My original copy is kind of beat.  That's what happens when you're young and don't have the best of equipment when the records were released and you play and play them!
