Several hours with the ZP3 before heading out to Lucy's.I often think the ZP3 is one of the best things Steve ever made.

Dave, I love those Getz Bossa Nova albums.  I've had a CD with two albums on it in my car for months.  If you haven't already, check out "Jazz Samba" and "Jazz Samba Encore".   Here's the CD.  Mark.

Mark...I love these albums too.  I have Jazz Samba.  I'll have to check to see if I have the encore album.  Getz's tone and phrasing is simply seductive on these discs.

Core, I had to find that particular issue of the Santana album. Nerdy stuff and I doubt anyone checks them out. Same with the Charlie Mingus copy. Lots of print runs and someone out there must be photoing each different cover for Discogs. Sometimes there is no photo and I have to trawl different sites and do an image search as well.
I have been out today ! Smiley

Oh, and my WE cable came today, I`ve sourced some rca`s , siver plated tellerium copper. very cheap from the same seller I got my spring vibration feet from. He does some interesting gear at low prices.

This next...

Syd my copies aren't the best of Evan's Paris Concert Editions one and two.  Also there seems to be more than the usual tape hiss on this live recording.  If you get the ORG 45 RPM versions, let me know how they sound.  If you like this late period Bill Evans, the best recordings I've heard are those made at the Village Vanguard in 1980.  This music can be had on a 10 LP Mosaic Box set or a 6 CD box set that I have.  There may be single albums too, I don't know.  There are also two box sets of 8 CDs each from concerts at the Keystone.  I don't think they were recorded as well as those at the Village Vanguard.  I have one of those 8 CD box sets.  Mark.

The Keystone sets still sound great though they are not quite as well recorded as the Vanguard set. I personally think the playing is better on the Keystone sets. The Vanguard was released in a budget version about five years ago, got copies for about 30 dollars and gave them away as gifts (I had paid a lot more when the set was originally released).

Lon,  I have the original set put out by Warner Brothers in the US in 1996.  I haven't listened to either the Keystone or Vanguard sets recently enough to say if I like the playing on one more than the other.  The Vanguard sessions were in June 1980 and the Keystone from August 31st to September 8th 1980.  I think Bill may have cut his engagement short. He would be dead a week later on Sept 15th.

This Analogue Productions Vinyl reissue now.  Mark.

I've listened to all three sets quite a bit the last five years or so. . . I prefer the Keystone, I think Bill was less conscious of being recorded, wasn't meant for release at the time, and the trio plays a bit better. Just my opinion. Love all Evans, to be honest. Listened to the famous stuff with George Russell yesterday.

I have the one called "Last Waltz" from Keystone. I think I've got a 2 CD set from those sessions put out By timeless.  I'll have to find them and the Vanguard Box and start playing them in the Den starting tomorrow morning...it's been too long.  Mark.

Listened to two tracks each from two new SACDs arrived in the mail: "Sorceror" by Miles Davis on Mobile Fidelity and "Tijuana Moods" by Charles Mingus on ORG. Both sound great, "Sorceror" going beyond and sounding fantastic. Now going to bed.

Cheers Mark, theres a lot of Evans to contemplate and one day I`ll get round to various `periods` when I have sufficient material and put all his albums in chronographical order in their `stack`. I must have around 10 of his albums now, and just ordered another "How MY Heart Sings" OJC.
I`m still getting pulled around by different artists on a whim as I hear new (to me) players and have just placed another order :
Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane (LP, Album, RE) OJC
Gerry Mulligan Quartet - Paris Concert (Pacific Jazz Records) N/M
Bill Evans Trio* - How My Heart Sings OJC
Eric Dolphy - Out There, OJC-
Eric Dolphy - Iron Man, Celluloid label

$66.91 + ship.  All new `cept G. Mulligan.

The vendor reimbursed me for Evans Paris Concert and I will wait for the ORG reissues 2x45rpm each.

ps. Do you have Mulligan & Baker discs?
The baritone sax is cooool.

Syd,  do I have Mulligan and Baker discs?  I think you knew the answer before you asked.  Of course, pretty much all they recorded together, a lot of Mulligan's other groups and almost all Baker from all periods.  Baker is in my top ten favorites.

Except for with Mingus, I haven't gotten into Dolphy much although I have a box set..I think on prestige, that's never been opened and some single CDs.

Listening to CD # 1 of this set...just as wonderful as I remembered.  Mark.

PS..."How My Heart Sings" was from the same sessions that yielded "Moonbeams", in May and June of 1962 on Riverside.  The following month he would record with a quintet that produced "Interplay".  Shortly thereafter he moved to Verve.  There was a lot of great music recorded on Verve but they recorded Bill in a lot of different settings, not always with the best results...Trio is where he thrived.

Lon, is that the Analogue Productions version?  I just bought the 200 gm Vinyl version. I seem to recall you saying new vinyl costs too much to buy...Analogue Productions has the Vinyl and SACD priced the same...just sayin'.  Mark.

Yes it's that SACD, I bought a used copy cheap. I'm just not buying audiophile vinyl. The SACD I can transport between my system, Dad's and Lucy's. The vinyl, no, and I've just decided I am not buying audiophile vinyl, not worth the money for me, and sticking to my guns.

Lon, I know, I know...just poking fun.  The cost of vinyl isn't the true reason you don't buy it.  Those Japanese SACDs and SHM discs cost more than "Audiophile" vinyl reissues. Most of the time when a 33 RPM "audiophile" reissue is done on both Vinyl and SACD, the cost is the same...another example below.  You just like small shiny silver plastic discs better than 12" black ones...hehe. Does that fancy PS Audio Transport/Direct stream  play SACDs?

This CD next...

PS...Syd, I just remembered, there are some recordings of the Bill Evans Trio from Ronnie Scott's done in 1980 that were good too.

Mark, that simply is not true. I am getting SHM-CDs from Japan for less than fifteen dollars each total. I am not buying many Japanese SACDs (mainly buying US SACDs) at all and when I do. . . about 20 to 24 bucks. The vinyl you are buying for 30 to 50 bucks. . . I just won't spend that on vinyl. Sorry. If you can justify it, fine. I buy vinyl in the five to fifteen dollar range, mainly in the five.

The PS Audio does not play SACD, at least not directly. . . it can be done with conversion but that's computer audio and not fun for me. I have three SACD players, all very good: an Arcam C37, a Denon DCD-A100 (now in Lucy's and Dad's systems, respectively) and in my main system I use the Denon DVD-A1UDCI, which is an amazing flagship machine that does Blu-ray and SACD like no other machine I've ever heard.

So your facts are just not straight, sorry. I love vinyl, but I'm not going to go the audiophile vinyl route, regular vinyl sounds excellent to me with the Rega and ZP3, but I live in THREE DIFFERENT PLACES this year with diminished dedicated listening time and vinyl is only good at one of them. Til that changes I'm not buying expensive vinyl, and I'm hoping my habit of not doing so sticks with me when I finally am living in only one place this summer.

The new SACD. Wow. I have never heard this sound so good on vinyl or digital, and this original mix is better than the remix imo.

Lon,  I didn't mean to start an argument, especially over a rather unimportant  subject.  The important thing is to enjoy Music....no matter the format.  I like both Vinyl and CD.  I even have a few Hybrid SACDs but don't have a SACD player...yet.  What do those two Denons cost...approximately...new or used?

In the late 80's I had vowed to never buy CDs.  Before I could blink, I bought a used CD player at a pawnshop and the rest is history.  It was about then that I was really getting into the 50's and 60's Jazz and the vinyl wasn't readily available and when it was, it was too costly for a good copy.  In the 90's an explosion of Jazz reissues on CD occurred that satisfied my lust for that period of Jazz. It's all good.  Party on Garth.  Mark.

PS...I've got the 45 RPM MFSL Vinyl of Scorcer...likely the same remastering.  I agree, it wonderful!

PSS...I might add that I too rarely pay more than $15 for used vinyl.  I don't return LPs and ebay sellers often over grade their vinyl, so to pay more doesn't make sense to me.  I'd rather listen to a CD than a VG or worse LP.  I only buy VG+ or better used vinyl but I've gotten some that are really only VG or G per the Goldmine standards. Now I've got to go order the 4 Music Matters 33 RPM Blue Note reissues that they started selling yesterday...and anything else that strikes my fancy.

I'm not arguing, I'm just pointing out your facts are not straight.

I did the same thing, got into CD because of the jazz reissue explosion and the fact that the lps were impossible to find in Texas. If I had been able to find more lps I probably wouldn't have dedicated so much time and money to get digital to sound as terrific as it does, but since I have, and since I have so much digital at my fingertips, that's where I live mostly. When I have the time to spin LPs I love the sound. I think the ZP3 is the best source Steve ever came out with. An amazing machine.

45 rpm records are just something I'll never buy.

The Denons were 2500 new for the A100 and 4500 new for the flagship; I got both for about 1500 new each after they were discontinued.

Lon, to tell you the truth, I never intended to start buying "Audiophile" vinyl. But shit happens.  When I started down the Hi Fi road again two years ago I bought a $50 phono stage and hooked up my old Pioneer TT to the Taboo MK III with the intention of only playing the thousands of LPs I had in boxes...maybe pick up a few more at Half Price Books and Records. Mainly playing the countless CDs I already owned.  You know as well as I do, how that went...hehe.  Mark.

It can happen, and if I had the luxury the last two years of being in one place and really having the time I'd probably be buying a lot more vinyl and listening too. (Probably not audiophile vinyl though) But I chose this caregiving path instead. Two years is all I can handle of it (two years caregiving my late wife was all I can handle too) and boy am I looking forward to my upcoming life (though not all the work to get there).

Enjoy yourself. . . I'm probably not going to be online for much longer. . . my "substitute" is leaving Dad's soon and I have to be there. Back to classical.

Lon,  speaking of Classical...I'm going to see the Dallas Symphony Orchestra tonight in the below program.

Bernstein Serenade and Symphony No 3
The American master gives voice to the eternal struggle of Creator and creation, father and son. The DSO with the Dallas Symphony Chorus and the Children's Chorus of Greater Dallas perform the impassioned Kaddish. Plus Bernstein's Serenade with violinist Liza Ferschtman.

Jaap van Zweden conducts
Liza Ferschtman, violin
Kelley Nassief, soprano
Ronald Guttman, Speaker
Dallas Symphony Chorus: Joshua Habermann, director
Children's Chorus of Greater Dallas: Cynthia Nott, director
BERNSTEIN Serenade
BERNSTEIN Symphony No. 3, "Kaddish"

This CD now...
