I haven't been in the Cave since Sunday. I ordered about 17 reissues from Sound Stage Direct. I placed the order on May 26th and 7 of the LPs came yesterday. What I have learned is that almost all the albums I ordered are not stocked at their "warehouse" but rather an order is placed with the vendor once my order is placed and paid for. So all but 1 of the speakers corner and a pure pleasure LP must be shipped from Europe. The MFSL and Music Matters and one speakers corner LP arrived in this first shipment. I don't think other vendors do this.

Anyway, this is a music matters 33 RPM reissue...it has Elvin Jones on it...very busy cymbals...I'll have to listen with the Nanotecs to see if they're less bothersome.

Syd, I liked your comparison of speaker cables. I guess you've saved me from trying the Ribbon cables. You are not the only one who has recommended them to me but now I'm looking forward to trying the WE 16g wire. The seller returns from vacation on Sunday, June 14th and he'll send me an invoice soon after. His son has pulled the listings for 128 ft of Black and 19 ft of the Red wire. Are you using just bare wire...that seems to be what Will finds best. Mark.

Will, I read your email and I'm making my way through all the new posts on the WE 16g wire. I have to admit the more I read and more I listen the more confused I get. I think the Nirvanas are a bit brighter/sharper than the nanotecs. But I've only had two listening sessions with them. I think I like the nanotecs best but to tell you the truth the spades are a pain since the wires I use for the sub are terminated with pins making a firm connection with both difficult...I think I prefer Bananas. Have you read about the new version of the Nanotec "Red'', now purple wire? It sounds interesting, it has a new copper wire with some Titanium in it that decreases the effects of impurities...if I recall correctly. They also now offer furtech bananas or spades that don't require soldering. Mark.

Mark, I`m just using a single run (3.5ft), strapped together, parallel, with around 10 twists in. I`ll take the twists out tonight. I worked out you`re getting around 140 feet. Thats.....a lot, good though. My second and third bundles will allow for some combinations ie bi-wire. I`ve read that bi-wire is total bs but it`ll be as easy as doubling the runs. I want to keep one bundle for a 7ft pair just in case.

This was part of an email I received today. The cover in the article is that of the Columbia CD reissue I have. The Analogue Productions Vinyl reissue has a different one, I believe the original cover. I'll give them both. Mark.

Masterpieces by Ellington
Duke Ellington's Best Album?
Fred Kaplan celebrates what he rightly regards as one of Duke Ellington's best and least known albums. It was called Masterpieces By Ellington and was one of the first 12-inch LPs. It appeared on Columbia's Masterworks label, rather than on the standard Columbia.

I confess I'd never heard the album, until I was working with Michael Brooks on a run of Ellington Columbia titles to reissue. The album consists of only four tracks, all in the 8 to 15-minute range. Ellington and Strayhorn wrote exciting new arrangements for Solitude, Mood Indigo and Sophisticated Lady, with a variety background horn parts to support the long string of solos.

The result is what would seem to be an extended jazz session, but is actually a revelatory exposition on the art of arranging in jazz. -Michael Cuscuna

That's a great Ellington album. I have to laugh though at all those discovering it via the new SACD and audiophile lp reissue. . . . I've enoyed the session since I bought an lp in the 'eighties and since I got the extremely excellent 5 cd set from CBS France of all Ellington '47 to '52 in the early 'nineties. That Ellington was a fantastic arranger and composer and band leader was no surprise to me, and that there were amazing recordings from the 'fifties on Columbia was also no surprise for me, but all over the 'net I read people "amazed" by this session. That's good I guess. But amusing for me, long a true believer.
