I was a little young for that Pop Festival Lon, but not by much!  :)
I was 15.
Quote:
Jimi Hendrix's sets at Woodstock and the Monterey Pop Festival may be more famous, but he played for his biggest U.S. crowd in Atlanta.
On July 4, 1970, just two months before his death at age 27, the guitarist was one of more than 30 acts that played for an estimated 300,000-400,000 people at the Atlanta Pop Festival in Byron, Ga. The full concert will see its first official release Friday as the two-CD/two-LP Freedom: Atlanta Pop Festival.

And I just read this: Quote:
A corresponding documentary, Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church, will premiere Sept. 4 on Showtime.

I just popped a 1959 Holland made Amperex Bugle Boy 12AX7 into the ZP3, replacing the Mullard.  No break in required, it sounds wonderful immediately.  Next, some Joni...

Sippin' coffee with Miles...starting with the last 4 tracks of CD #3 of the Complete Columbia recordings with John Coltrane and the first track of CD #4.  These are the five tracks recorded May 26th 1958.  This is the same Sextet that would play at Newport the same year and go on to record "Kind Of Blue" the following year.  As far as I know this is the only other studio work with Bill Evans besides KOB. Three of the 5 tracks were originally released on side two of the album "Jazz Track"...

Next is the remainder of CD #4 of the above 6 CD set.  This is the Kind Of Blue sessions recorded in March and April of 1959...I think this set has time corrected masters...not sure...

PS...the SV83 power tubes Stone sold me sound glorious...to be fair, until I do some A/B listening with the Mil Spec tubes I previously used, I can't be sure they sound better.  I had been watching and reading every ad Stone posted for these...I think since March of this year...here, on audiogon and ebay.  He seemed to have an inexhaustible supply and even though I have a dozen unused pairs of the Mil Spec version, I was always curious and tempted to buy some. He was originally asking $15 per pair but I think some pairs were matched.  When his last ad said this was the last of his stash, I could no longer resist.  Besides, if you back out shipping they were being sold for about $4 per tube...a bargain...and those who know me, know I love a bargain. So I jumped on these 14 pair...glad I did.  Thanks again, Stone/Larry.

I really like that Miles and Trane box set Mark, though I confess I've found better sounding cds of the material within.

Right now one of my favorite cds from Marty Grosz, who I love listening to.

Thinking of Joni.  Hope she's doing well...

PS...I switched things up a bit...took the Zu Audio "Souls" out and put the Omega Alnico 7XRS speakers in. It's been months since I've listened to them. I'm using the Virtue Nirvana speaker cables.  The high end is a bit much so I've taken the 60's Amperex White Label 6299s out and put in some Amperex Bugle Boy 6DJ8s in the Zen Signature Monoblocks. The high end is still a little too much for me but I know most would prefer this sound...shimmer and sparkle to spare. And of course the Jolida 100 CD player is in the mix with Raytheon 12AX7s...and the new NOS SV83s are in the Monos...

"Monk in his prime. . . " Or not. Many think he was actually declining at this time. He certainly was at a height of popularity and earning power. But he hardly composed at all and he was less innovative in arranging and performing than he had been in the past. Though I came into Monk from recordings of this era, over the past decades I've learned to value the earlier Monk more, but still love ALL Monk.

Well Lon,  I guess prime is a relative term.  I think Monk was in his "prime" even before Blue Note first recorded him.  I guess I was thinking of the mid 60's as compared to the what came later...not what came before.  Lately I've really been enjoying the Riverside Tenor sessions and all the Columbia material on Vinyl.  I have the blue Notes on CD but haven't listened to it for a long time...not sure where the box set is, or I would.  Mark.

When I hear of an artis in his "prime" I think in terms of the whole career.

The Blue Note stuff is really his most inventive and fertile period so perhaps that is his prime, I don't think he was actually "in his prime" before that because he needed the recordings and the authority they gave for him to have the blossoming that occurred.

Regardless the man was amazing. I love his music.  If you haven't read it, you'd like the biography by Robin Kelly.

Hey you bought Lizzard, Core! I might play it later on. This time I`ll read the lyrics as I go on.....it`s a story, or tale of knights, and a circus, I think. How many times have I played it and never felt the need to engage my grey matter.
Which reminds me....7 days till the Crimson gig.

In the Cave.  This is a 1963 Live recording of the second great Miles Davis Quintet prior to Wayne Shorter's arrival the following year.  George Coleman is on Sax.  The Music is great but the recording or maybe the remastering, leaves a lot to be desired.  This is a reissue probably from the 80's or 90's...

Mark, every lp I've heard of this (which would be 'seventies pressings) was "fake stereo" and this was a mono recording. I HATE the sound of fake stereo. I prefer the sound of this in the "Seven Steps" box set, where there is also an additional tune not on the lp that is in fact my favorite from the concert, "I Thought about You."

Right now

I have that seven steps box...I'll have to pull the cd and listen to it in the Cave. As I recall there are several live recording dates in that box...

It's a fantastic box set. It has the "Seven Steps" album, which is amazing, and also unreleased takes, and the non-orchestral material that was on "Summer Nights." And it has the entire Philharmonic Hall concert that spawned "My Funny Valentine" and "Four & More," the Antibes concert we were discussing, and also the appearance in Tokyo with Sam Rivers (a big favorite) and finally the Berlin concert where Shorter is at last in the band.

The sound is perhaps among the very best of all the Miles Davis Columbia box sets. Love this set.

Right now I'm back to listening to the Gil with the Jobim Trio, beautiful music.
