Lon when I was in the USN I was stationed in San Francisco during it's glory years. The Greatfull Dead was the house band at the Carousel Lounge which was at the end of Market St. The Carousel was a biker bar and you often saw Hell's Angels there. I got to see a lot of bands from that era, Linda Ronstadt, Jimmi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Chambers Brothers, Alvin Lee, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Mamas and Papas, REO Speedwagon, Eric Burdon, Donovan, Richie Havens, I saw George Harrison play acoustic solo in Golden gate park for free and no one mugged him. The Dead would play live concerts and people would record the concert some using pretty sophisticated gear and the Dead didn't care. Seems like I remember the Dead using McIntosh stereo amps, big ones, for their PA system.
