This RVG edition is sounding really good today. I know it's not really popular but I like the RVG edition cds. They sound different, they take a few chances, but they're an experience. Dexter is just chewing up the changes with Bud Powell and Kenny Clarke (and Pierre Michelot, won't forget him). Four masters all lubed up and swinging.

Dexter has me thinking of Lester Young a few times here, so I'll spin some Pres.

Right now another one that might not be everyones cup of tea, cant help but imagine the album without the voices. Can't argue with the cover though 8-)

I like that one a lot too. Great Duke Pearson arrangements and compositions on that one. Pearson really made a great contribution to the label as arranger, pianist, and A&R straw boss. Followed the footsteps of Ike Quebec quite admirably. His death was way too early and robbed us of a lot of great music that could have been.

Right now, you inspired me to pull out another great Blue Note date with voices. I had this on scratchy vinyl for a long time, and the cd is a great one that I play now, and is really well expanded.

Great comeback album, wonderful job done by Prince for Larry. Man oh man there is some amazing bass playing on this (Larry Graham and I think also some by Prince). A few tracks have two bass lines going and they just move you.

Of those the one I like the most and listen to most often is the "Complete After Midnight Sessions." Excellent stuff. It's more "modern" and more stripped down production wise compared to the others. I really enjoy the featured soloists: violinist Stuff Smith, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonist Juan Tizol, and alto saxophonist Willie Smith. And the drummer is exceptional, Lee Young, Lester Young's brother. That family (mom and dad and almost all siblings were musicians) had real beautiful music inside them.

The "Nat King Cole Story" is a pretty good collection. It's stereo remakes of his forties and fifties hit material. I actually prefer the original mono versions of these for the most part, but I love Nat and he's always worth hearing.

"Love is the Thing" was one of his first and maybe his biggest lp hits. It's a fully orchestrated "Nat the Singer" date. I confess his singing is always moving, but I reach more often for sessions where he was at the piano. I actually fell for Nat the pianist before I fell for Nat the singer, and I actually like his singing while swinging with his trio the best. Though there are some orchestral performances that are outstanding. For example his "Stardust" always makes me well up with a tear. . . when he sings "But. . that was long ago" . . . wow.

About twenty years ago I bought a huge Mosaic Records box set, 18 cds, of all Nat's Trio work on Capitol. My favorite things are on there, and not necessarily ever on an album or cd since. I guess of what is out there I like the Complete After Midnight disc the best.
