I'm watching the final season of Leverage on DVD and man the music in this show, funky smooth jazz so to speak, sounds incredible on the DVDs of the various seasons. Great recordings, fun grooves. (Music by Joe LoDuca).

The only Bee Hive Record release I had never heard until Mosaic released the complete collection as a cd box set this month. I'm not a huge Johnny Hartman fan, but this is a nice one, with varying instrumentation track to track. And he sings Jobim's "Wave," one of my Mom's favorite tunes, and I wish she were around so I could play it for her, she would like this album.

Johnny Hartman – Once In Every Life
Johnny Hartman, vocal with Joe Wilder, trumpet, fluegelhorn; Frank Wess, tenor sax, flute; Al Gafa, guitar; Billy Taylor, piano; Victor Gaskin, bass; Keith Copeland, drums.
Master Sound Productions, Franklin Square, NY, August 11 and 12, 1980
Recording engineer: Ben Rizzi
Produced by Susan & Jim Neumann

I remember when I first started getting into Ellington and loved his upbeat sort of sloppy swing I thought this lp was a snoozer.

Sometime about fifteen years ago I spun it one night while watching my wife enjoying our cats and its beauty struck me, and it became a favorite disc to relax to and and just breathe in air and breathe out stress.

This Impex gold cd is the best sounding digital version I've heard of the original lp and includes bonus material in stereo and mono.

dla, I have stereo and mono copies (two stereo--an original and the digitally remastered one--and one mono) on vinyl and four cd copies. Smiley I'm a bit obsessed with this recording.

Honestly I won't say the Impex cd is better (they also have an lp version they put out last year, which I haven't bought as it is too expensive, I just won't pay 30 to 40 dollars for a new lp) but it sure is damned good. Vinyl and digital are like apple and oranges to me, and I like both apples and oranges, each have qualities that are wonderful. I'm sure if you love the lp you'd love the cd, both are quite capable of transporting the listener away. The cd does have bonus material (alternate tracks in stereo, alternate tracks in mono, one tune in mono not in stereo) that are worth hearing. I listen to cds much more often than lps (I just have so many more shiny discs) but either the lp or the cd takes me away.

I swapped out the Sylvania Triple Mica gray plate 5751 for a 1961 Amperex 12AX7 in slot 2 of the ZP3 and put in a 1969 Amperex 12AX7 in slot 1...slot 3 still has the RCA black plate Triple Mica 5814...sounds good but better than the pair of Sylvania 5751s?...don't think so.  I do have to admit I have not disliked any tube combinations I've tried.  Even the stock tubes were good.

These are the first LPs played...an original 1957 release that is in pretty good condition considering it's older than I am.  Now I've got a Music Matters 33 RPM Blue Note reissue spinning...

One more Music matters 33 RPM Blue Note reissue then to bed. The end of next week a couple more of these wonderful blue note reissues will be released.  I think I've gotten behind...I'll likely order 5 more if my count is correct.

Got some Aurios ridiculously cheap used and have been trying them under the different components this week. Very nice under the DVR but ultimately I think they are best under the PWT. This disc sounds amazing.

I'm listening to CDs in the second system to compare my Zu Audio Libtec speaker cables to a pair of Virtue Nirvana cables...I'm using the Omega Alinco 7XRS speakers as the high end is accentuated with these speakers and any new cable would have to work with them...the Zu Audio Souls don't seem to be too picky and work with any cable.  To compare I'm using an XRCD24 of art Blakey's album "Big Beat".  It has lots of cymbals to allow comparison of differences in the high end with each cable.

Well, I've listened with the Nirvana's and am 4 songs in with the libtecs...So?  I can't say they're much different.  I'll try another comparison with a different CD tomorrow. I also listened to the Miles Davis album earlier. Mark.

Chillin' in the Cave for a couple hours.  These are the first and second LPs...the first an original of a 1962 concert, the second a Music Matters 33 RPM Blue Note reissue...

The last few days I have been listening through as many streams as I can find on Tidal from a Rolling Stone list of 50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time....Especially the ones I have never heard.
There's a surprising number of those.
Next.

One of those special listening days, for some reason everything sounds amazing today. . . possibly speaker positioning--here at my new house I have to set the speakers into "serious listening position" every day with the Ingress Audio Roller Blocks under them, otherwise they are back close to the wall where Lucy prefers them. After a few months of experimenting I may have just gotten the location right today and will try to replicate this in the near future.

Also this one set of Aurios I bought have really done something for my Transport. . . I may have to seek more or try out Stillpoints or the new VooDoo Cable Iso-pods. There's a rythmic authority that really comes through.

I played this, which I have never been crazy about, and it sounded so so good. . . I wondered why I've neglected it.  Some of the arrangements are a bit too "easy listening," but some are quite interesting, and Paul and Jim play so well.

I followed that up with this and it just sounded so natural and present. Made me realize this is a very "true to life" recording, seemed like these four were right there.

Then I put on this as someone I had recommended it to emailed me to say "listen to the amazing percussion on this!" And man all the layers are unraveled, and to my delight Lucinda came down the stairs from upstairs and dancing into the room and all about the room . . . which always is a delight. Life is good tonight.
