Lon, I finally got around to listening to Herbie Hancock's "River: The Joni Letters" on Spotify this morning.  I enjoyed it but it will be no surprise I prefer the original versions of Joni's or her remakes with an orchestra.

While on spotify I also listened to a bunch of Live Tower of Power and Little Feat.  I even listened to Herbie's LP with the Headhunters that I used to play when I was a DJ in college...came in handy when a potty break or telephone conversation was required...would just put on Chameleon at almost 16 minutes  and be on my way.  Mark.

PS...Lon, did you see my email?

I'm not sure if there is anyone else here that buys the Music Matters 33 RPM Blue Note reissues but I learned something this morning. Music Matters will no longer have it's products sold at retail outlets after their current inventory is gone..  Their site will be the only source.  The price was also raised from $34.99 to $39.95...not a big deal for me for such a superior product...I ordered three new releases from their site this morning. Mark.

Listened to these so far tonight...the first a CD with the Denon player in the Cave...still not satisfied with the sound...I'll try a pair of Voodoo Evolution interconnects and a well burned in Zu Audio Mission power cord next time to see if I can get it better. I ordered some SACDs by MFSL from Elusive Disc tonight to see how the Denon handles them.

The first LP is an original, I have ordered the Rhino Vinyl reissue from Elusive Disc.  There is also an Analogue Productions reissue of "Fragile" but it's out of stock.

Then a little Steely Dan...an original.  The vinyl Rig is sounding amazing...

PS...Lon, I have to listen to that album and "Miles in the Sky" from the CD  box set to decide if I want to get the MFSL 45 RPM vinyl.  I recently listened to my MFSL 45 RPM copy of Nefertiti...I like it but it was the last album Miles made with only acoustic instruments. At $45 each, I want to make sure I'll listen to them more than once.

I've decided to play some CDs that arrived yesterday in my second system.  This first is a Japanese reissue of studio session recordings by the "Kind Of Blue" group in 1958 that weren't on the kob album. it is missing an alternate take of Fran Dance though...great music...

From the new box set of live Columbia recordings by Monk. Uses the same mastering as the early CD release but sounds a bit improved to me. Great listening experience!

Lon, I haven't ordered that set yet...or the Ellington or Art Blakey sets.  I compared UK and German amazons and the cost was the same...which would have cheaper shipping?  I think I'll wait for the inevitable discounts to come with Christmas...or Black Friday.

I've gone a bit crazy ordering music in the past couple weeks. My order of about a dozen albums from Dusty Groove arrived and I have orders on the way from Music Direct, Elusive Disc and Music Matters which is now the only place to get the new releases of their wonderful Blue Note reissues.

The 2 meter Voodoo Evolution interconnects arrived yesterday and I put them temporarily into the second system. Mark.

Thanks for letting me know the interconnects arrived. Hope they help that system out.

I am not sure which has the cheapest shipping, my guess both are very similar. I ordered all three sets (two separate orders) from UK, got the Monk and Blakey in yesterday and hope to get the Ellington very soon, the two sets I got were actually mailed from amazon Germany!

Now listening to the second disc.

Hey Lon, I found your next career...hehe

http://www.bizbuysell.com/Business-Opportunity/High-End-Audio-Manufacturing/1204...

I've been listening to the cuts from "Miles In The Sky" and "Filles De..." from the CD box.  I must admit they have grown on me.  I really like them. The electronic instruments are just a little guitar (George Benson) and electric piano from Herbie...all the bass is still acoustic.  The music is reaching my limits though...I still don't think I could take the plunge to "Bitches Brew" but will try it again before the year is over.

Bottom line...I'll probably buy the MFSL 45 RPM sets of the two Miles' albums but I really wish they were single LP 33 RPMs.  Music matters has proven to me that 33 RPM can be just as good or better than 45 RPM.  Yesterday the mail woman delivered three newly released Music Matters 33 RPM Blue Note reissues. Mark.

Ha! No "next career" for me, I'm retired for good if I can help it.

There's electric piano from both Herbie and Chick on Filles De Kilamanjaro and some electric bass on there from Ron. I love that album! Glad you seem to be enjoying it some.

Me I'm listening to more of the Dylan Bootleg Series Vol. 12.

I have maybe an hour and a half to listen in the Cave.  My MFSL 45 RPM reissue of KOB just arrived a few minutes ago.  Before ordering I read a lot of posts on the Hoffman forum and elsewhere about it and had my fingers crossed that I'd get a good copy. Off center pressings with Wow were reported as well as too much bass. My first record is perfect but the bass does seem to be boosted a bit but turning the Sub down and using the Torii bass switch in the "Tightening" position has corrected most of the problem...mostly on "So What". All other instruments sound better than my legacy Mono copy...but remember this is a stereo version I think from different tapes.  What really seems better is the piano...more forward in the mix.  Now disc two...

PS...Damn..."Blue in Green" has some fairly loud ticks that haven't gone away with a second play...mmmm

PSS...I took disc one into the bathroom and under bright light I can see the source of the 40 or so ticks I still hear after three plays...a small deep scratch/mark...so I guess this will be the first LP I've returned, not because I haven't received LPs with defects...they just weren't as intrusive as this.  Oh well.

Next is an Analogue Productions reissue of this one.  According to the insert, it's the first album pressed at QRP...

After listening to the very nice new Steven Wilson remix of Yes' "Fragile," it's on to disc 2 of this great set for the second time.

Edit to add: listening via my Oppo PM-1 headphones through the CSP2+ and love the sound. Great headphones.

Mark, you mentioned some bad vinyl and I buy a lot of new vinyl too.  I have found a disconcerting amount of defects compared to, say, 40 years ago.  I've seen LPs that look like they've been hit with fine sand paper and when I've exchanged them the replacements are the same!  I don't know what's going on anymore.  It's important to find a good vinyl source that accepts returns of defective vinyl.  I buy from EBReggae quite a lot.

Yes, some `new` albums I buy have an odd tick and some have passages of `warp` on a particular instrument, and it is wierd to look at new records to see a not new condition album. I rack my brains but know I`m not the culprit. In fact any ticks which turn up are a puzzle. You lower the arm and lift it off at the end, nothing else. Even unfortunately skating the arm accross the disc doesn`t result in ticks. I have older records that have a myriad of fine scratches but are quiet apart from very faint surface noise on quiet passages.

Thankfully my Columbia `6 eye` re of KOB is lovely. The bass isn`t that prominent but sounds natural and `there`.

I find B. Brew new every time by following one instruments involvement and intereaction. The 2 basses playing together on one side, McLoughlins guitar work, the way the rythyms come together, and of course Miles horn which finds it`s way into stereo wonderland .

Ps  Who`s going to post first in our Vinyl  forum ?   Smiley

Syd, Vinyl Forum?  This is where you should post Vinyl or otherwise.  The MFSL 45 RPM sonically is wonderful.  In my reading the bass seems to be partly due to an "Echo Chamber" below the 30th street studio in NYC, as well as the echo in the large studio with high ceilings.  Anyway the apparent bass boost is a minor quibble with me.  On Monday I will call music direct and try to have them send a replacement for LP #1...I don't want to give up disc #2 as it is perfect.  Given the problems I've read about with this set, I'm reluctant to take the gamble that I would get a whole set with no defects. What'd you pay for a 6 eye KOB...In VG+ or better condition it'd probably be far more than the $50 for the MFSL set.  Mark.

PS...Archie, Syd...I buy a lot of reissue "Audiophile" Vinyl and agree the incidence of minor defects is much higher than in the 70's and 80's when I would buy conventional vinyl.  The occurrence of warps and non-fills is too high for the price paid but for most of what I wish to purchase, finding near mint copies of originals would be almost impossible and the cost excessive.  So I put up with the minor annoyances.  I do know that many send back LPs with these minor problems, for me it's not worth the expense and effort in most cases...in this case the 40+ loud ticks completely ruin the song "Blue In Green".
